To stream a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, join compatible files with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, encode video as H.264 and audio as AAC, then send the output to YouTube’s RTMP ingest URL using your stream key. The command below is a starting point, not a universal YouTube preset: check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your installed FFmpeg build before choosing production settings.

This guide means a playlist of files on your computer or server—not a playlist page on YouTube. FFmpeg does not treat a YouTube watch-page playlist URL as this kind of input; its concat options join media files supplied to FFmpeg. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ describes the available file-concatenation approaches.

Prepare the files and check whether they can be joined directly

Before making a playlist, inspect each file’s video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, sample rate, and stream layout. You can use ffprobe, which is included with many FFmpeg distributions, or another media-inspection tool. A concat-demuxer list is simplest when the files have compatible streams and time bases. Different codecs, missing audio tracks, or incompatible layouts may require normalization or a filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes the media.

FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. Do not assume that putting unlike files in one list will make FFmpeg reconcile their differences automatically.

Create a file list

Save a plain-text file such as playlist.txt with one file entry per line:

file '/media/clip-01.mp4'
file '/media/clip-02.mp4'
file '/media/clip-03.mp4'

Replace these example paths with the actual locations of your videos. Quote paths appropriately for your operating system, and use paths that the account running FFmpeg can read. The -safe 0 option in the example command permits paths that the concat demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe; use it only with a list you control.

Send the playlist to YouTube Live over RTMP

For compatible local files, this illustrative command reads the list at real-time speed, loops it indefinitely, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and publishes an RTMP output:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

Replace the destination with the RTMP ingest URL and stream key provided in YouTube’s live setup. Do not publish the key in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. This command is a representative pattern, not a tested, complete, or universally appropriate YouTube preset. Verify option behavior with your installed FFmpeg version and consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the ingest protocol you select. The available evidence here does not establish current general RTMP bitrate, resolution, or keyframe recommendations, so none are specified as universal targets.

What the important options do

  • -re reads file input at its native rate so the output is paced like a live stream rather than sent as fast as the machine can encode it.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the concat input indefinitely.
  • -f concat -i playlist.txt selects the concat demuxer and reads the list of files.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? selects the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream. The question mark makes the audio mapping optional; it does not create audio for a silent clip.
  • -c:v libx264 selects FFmpeg’s H.264 encoder, if the installed build includes it. -pix_fmt yuv420p selects a widely compatible pixel format, while -preset veryfast trades compression efficiency for encoding speed.
  • -c:a aac selects FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder. -b:a 128k sets the audio bitrate; FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder uses constant-bitrate mode when a bitrate is set, and AAC-LC is its default profile.
  • -ar 44100 -ac 2 requests 44.1 kHz, two-channel audio. The documented 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps stereo recommendations cited here are YouTube HLS guidance; verify separate current RTMP guidance rather than treating HLS recommendations as RTMP requirements.
  • -f flv selects the FLV output container commonly used for RTMP. The final URL must match the ingest protocol and destination details YouTube provides.

FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes its input, mapping, looping, and output options. The codec documentation covers encoder availability and behavior; options can differ by build.

RTMP and HLS are different ingest workflows

RTMP is the simpler fit for the command above: FFmpeg encodes the media and sends an FLV stream to the supplied RTMP destination. HLS is not the same command with a different URL. YouTube HLS ingest requires MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist, HTTPS POST or PUT uploads, and segment durations of one to four seconds. Its rolling playlist must have no more than five outstanding segments. That means the sender must package and manage segments and playlist updates, not just change the output URL.

Workflow What the sender must do Settings established by the cited guidance
RTMP Encode and send an RTMP output, such as the illustrative FLV command above, to the ingest URL and key provided for the stream. Current general YouTube RTMP bitrate, resolution, and keyframe targets are not established here. Check YouTube’s current RTMP encoder guidance.
HLS Package media into MPEG-TS segments, maintain a rolling playlist, and upload over HTTPS using POST or PUT. Segments are one to four seconds; the rolling playlist has no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube HLS guidance supports H.264 and AAC and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo audio at 128 Kbps for stereo.

YouTube’s ingestion protocol documentation covers protocol mechanics. Its HLS encoder guidance provides HLS-specific requirements and supported formats. Do not carry HLS packaging rules or audio recommendations over to RTMP without checking the applicable RTMP guidance.

Protect the key, preview, then go live

  1. In YouTube’s live setup, obtain the ingest URL and stream key for the broadcast. Exact Studio labels and account eligibility can vary; follow the current setup flow shown for your channel.
  2. Put the destination into the command without exposing the stream key in a public file or shared log. Restrict access to any script that contains it.
  3. Start FFmpeg and check its output for input, encoder, and connection errors. Confirm the stream appears in YouTube’s preview or health status before making it public.
  4. If the preview is healthy, proceed with the visibility and broadcast controls in YouTube Studio. If not, stop and diagnose the local input, encoding, or ingest connection rather than repeatedly exposing the key.

The official protocol documentation explains ingest mechanics but does not settle all current account eligibility rules or every YouTube Studio screen. Check YouTube’s current help and Studio flow for your account.

Copyright, permissions, and monetization are separate from encoding

H.264 and AAC are technical encoding choices; they do not grant rights to the video or music in a playlist. Use media you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright rules before broadcasting. A technically valid, continuous stream is not by itself evidence that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies, including rules that may apply to reused content. Check the current policies for your channel and location rather than assuming that looping or re-encoding makes third-party material permissible.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg reports a concat or stream mismatch: inspect the files’ codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, and audio layouts. Use only compatible files with the concat demuxer, or normalize the files or build a filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes.
  • The stream has video but no sound: check that the selected files contain an audio stream. The optional audio map avoids failure when audio is absent; it does not synthesize a soundtrack. If playlist entries have inconsistent audio layouts, normalize them before concatenating.
  • The command says an encoder is unavailable: check whether your FFmpeg build includes libx264 and the native AAC encoder. Install or build a version with the required encoder, or select an encoder available in your build and verify its output compatibility.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm that the ingest URL and key are current, the destination uses the same protocol as the output format, and the machine can reach the ingest service. Check FFmpeg’s connection messages and YouTube’s preview or health status.
  • The output is choppy or falls behind: check whether the machine can encode the selected input in real time and whether the files are compatible. The example’s veryfast preset favors encoding speed, but the right settings depend on the source and system; do not compensate by guessing an RTMP bitrate or resolution target.
  • The stream ends instead of repeating: confirm -stream_loop -1 applies to the concat input and that the list and every file path are readable. Review FFmpeg’s final error rather than assuming a YouTube-side fault.
  • You need HLS but are using the RTMP command: stop and configure HLS packaging and HTTPS segment uploads. A different URL alone does not implement the required segment and rolling-playlist behavior.
