Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOpen the Google One Storage Manager for a service-by-service overview, then use Gmail, Drive, and backup settings to identify the specific items taking up space. Google storage is shared across services, so checking Drive alone may not explain why your account is nearly full.
Start with the Google One Storage Manager
The Storage Manager shows how much storage is used by Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive, and provides cleanup routes. On a computer, open Google One Storage Manager, choose Storage, then under Get your space back select Free up account storage. Review the suggested items or choose a service to see its cleanup options.

On Android, open Drive, Google Photos, or Gmail, tap your profile picture or initial, select the relevant account if needed, and choose Manage storage or the cloud icon showing used space. Tap Usage details to see service-level totals. Some cleanup options, including the over-quota cleanup target, appear only when the account is over its limit. The pending-backup amount shown in Android applies to Google Photos content pending on the device being checked; it does not include pending backups from other devices or locations such as Drive or WhatsApp. See Google’s Android storage cleanup instructions.

On iOS, Google Photos and Google account storage help point users to Clean up space or Manage storage to reach the Storage Manager. App labels and availability can vary by account state, so follow the current label shown in your app. Google also describes the overall storage system in Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos.

Find the files and messages behind the totals
Search Gmail for large attachments
In Gmail’s search bar, enter one of these queries:
has:attachment larger:10Mfinds messages with attachments over 10 MB.filename:.pdf larger:5Mfinds PDF attachments over 5 MB.older_than:2y has:attachmentfinds messages with attachments older than two years.
Review messages before deleting them. Deleting an email can remove information you want to keep, and messages in Gmail Trash continue to count until permanently deleted.

Sort Google Drive by size
In Drive, select Storage in the left-hand menu. Google says files are listed automatically from largest to smallest, making this the quickest way to spot oversized items. Check the owner before removing shared files: shared files generally use the owner’s quota, not yours. A copy you make, files you add to a shared folder, or a file you become the owner of may count against your storage. Google explains the quota rules in How your Google storage works.

Look for backups and hidden app data
In storage management, open Backups and review device backups you no longer need. Google also counts WhatsApp backups on Android toward the account quota. Before deleting one, consider reducing the size of future backups in WhatsApp settings. Google warns that deleting a WhatsApp backup is permanent, and another backup may appear if the app’s backup settings remain unchanged.

Connected apps can store data that is not obvious in the regular file list. In Google Drive, open Settings, then Manage apps, to inspect hidden app data.
Check for duplicate Drive files manually
Google Drive does not have a built-in automatic duplicate finder. To investigate, switch to list view, sort by name, and look for repeated filenames such as “(1)” or “Copy of.” Confirm that the files are truly redundant before deleting either version.

Understand what counts toward Google storage
Google account storage is pooled across Drive, Gmail, and Photos; WhatsApp backups also count in applicable cases. In Google Photos, original-quality photos and videos count, as do Storage saver and Express quality items backed up after June 1, 2021. Storage saver items backed up before that date may not count, so deleting them may not free quota. Google’s details are in About your Google Photos activity & storage.
- Items in Gmail, Drive, and Photos Trash can continue to use storage until permanently deleted.
- Drive for desktop’s local disk usage is different from cloud quota. Streamed files can use little space on your computer while still counting in the cloud; mirrored shared files may use local disk without counting toward your cloud storage. See Google’s Drive for desktop storage explanation.
Why the storage number may not change right away
After deleting multiple files, Google says the storage display can take up to 48–72 hours to update. Empty the relevant Trash if you want deleted items to stop counting; permanently deleting them also means you may not be able to recover them.

A Google One plan upgrade has a separate delay: Google says it can take up to 24 hours to take effect. If the new capacity is still not reflected, Google advises signing out and back in. These are different update windows, so neither cleanup nor an upgrade necessarily changes the displayed total immediately.
When cleanup is not enough
A personal Google account includes up to 15 GB at no charge, and Google lists Google One plans starting at 100 GB; those figures are stated on Google’s help pages without a publication year. Current price and eligibility depend on location and the plan shown to your account, so check Google’s current storage purchase page rather than relying on an old price. A plan adds capacity but does not identify or remove the files already using it.
Work and school accounts may have administrator-managed storage. Users on those accounts may not be able to buy more storage themselves; contact the organization’s administrator about the available quota.
Google warns that reaching the storage limit can prevent new Drive uploads or file creation, Gmail sending and receiving, and Photos backups. If an account remains over quota for two years, Google says content across Gmail, Drive, and Photos may be deleted. Check Google’s current account-specific notices and policy details if you receive an over-quota warning. The limits and consequences are described in Google One Help.
