Old gadgets are not automatically unsafe, and there is no universal age at which every device should be retired. Check the device’s physical and battery condition, use only compatible charging accessories, look for model-specific recalls or safety warnings, and verify that connected features still receive security updates. If you pass a device on, back up and erase your personal data first.
How to assess an old gadget
Start with the exact make and model, and find the manufacture date if the product has one. Those details help you check safety notices, software support and accessory compatibility. Then assess the device itself rather than relying on its age alone.

- Physical condition: Look for signs of impact, deformation, unusual heat, moisture exposure or other damage.
- Battery condition: Treat suspected damage as a reason to stop using the device and ask the manufacturer or a qualified service center for advice.
- Power accessories: Confirm that the charger and any replacement battery are recommended for that specific device.
- Safety notices: Search for recalls or warnings using the model and, where relevant, manufacture date.
- Security support: Check whether the manufacturer still provides software updates for the model and its connected features.
A device can still turn on and function while its software or connected services are no longer supported. Electrical condition and cybersecurity support are separate questions.

When are an old battery or charger a concern?
Stop using a device with suspected battery damage
Physical stress, heat and moisture can pose risks to mobile-device batteries. CPSC and CTIA guidance advises avoiding those conditions and having a device inspected by a service center if damage is suspected. Do not open, rebuild or attempt to charge a loose lithium-ion cell yourself. CPSC and CTIA mobile-device safety guidance

The guidance about loose 18650 cells is specific: separated, unprotected cells can short against metal and overheat, and an unsuitable charger can exceed a cell’s specifications. That warning is not evidence that every intact battery in an older gadget is unsafe. CPSC guidance on loose 18650 cells
Do not judge a charger by whether the plug fits
A physically fitting connector does not establish electrical compatibility. Use a manufacturer- or carrier-recommended charger and replacement battery for the exact device model. If compatibility is unclear, ask the device manufacturer before charging or buying a replacement. CPSC and CTIA mobile-device safety guidance

Check for warnings tied to the exact model
Some safety warnings apply only to particular products and production dates. For example, in 2025 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned against using HALO Bolt ACDC 58830 units made in December 2019 or earlier after reports of chargers catching fire. That product-specific notice is a reason to check the exact model and date—not a general cutoff for other old gadgets. CPSC HALO Bolt warning

What to do before donating or recycling a gadget
- Back up what you want to keep. Save important files, photos and other personal information before wiping the device.
- Erase personal data. Use the device’s built-in erase or factory-reset process. For a computer, FTC guidance recommends erasing the drive or resetting it to factory settings. FTC guidance on disposing of old computers
- Choose a suitable destination. Consider repair, reuse, manufacturer or retailer take-back, community collection or a local-authority recycling route. Which options accept a particular device can vary by location.
- Check special handling before drop-off. Contact the manufacturer, retailer or local program first if the battery is damaged or the device is recalled. Do not assume a standard electronics collection point will accept it.
