Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use Google’s Storage Manager to find what is actually filling your shared account quota, then remove only items you recognize and can safely do without. For files you need but do not need online, download and verify a local copy before removing the cloud version. If every file must stay in Google, cleanup cannot free occupied space; adding Google One storage is the safer fallback.
What counts toward Google storage?
Google Account storage is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Google also says Android WhatsApp backups count toward the account’s storage. Google Account Help says a personal account includes up to 15 GB shared across these services, but capacity can differ because of plans, promotions, or an organization-managed account. See Google’s explanation of how account storage works.

When an account is full, Google says you may be unable to upload or create Drive files, send or receive Gmail, or back up photos and videos. Checking the breakdown first helps you target the service that is actually using space rather than deleting files at random.

- Open Google One Storage Manager and review storage use by service and the cleanup categories it presents. If that direct page is unavailable, open Google One and choose Storage or Free up account storage; labels can vary by account and device.
- Review suggested items one at a time. Start with large files you recognize, such as videos, duplicate downloads, or old attachments, rather than clearing an entire category without checking its contents.
- Use the service-specific storage views to identify large items. Google’s Drive help describes a largest-first storage view, while large photos and videos are often significant users. See Google Drive’s storage-management instructions and Google One’s storage-management guidance.
Keep needed files by moving them out of Google first
If you want to keep a file but no longer need it in Google’s cloud, download it to a computer or another storage location before deleting the cloud copy. Open the downloaded file to confirm it is usable; for important files, consider checking that the transfer is complete before removing the original. Google One’s computer cleanup instructions specifically include downloading Photos files before removing them. The download and export steps differ by service, so do not assume every type of Google data has the same workflow. See Google One’s cleanup instructions.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
You may already have enough free space on your computer. An external drive is optional if you want another local copy. Remember that a file saved only on your computer is no longer available from Google’s cloud, and a computer’s free disk space is separate from your Google Account quota. Drive for desktop syncing or local placeholders can also make computer storage figures look different from cloud usage; Google explains the distinction in its Drive for desktop storage guidance.
Choose low-risk cleanup targets
Google Photos
Check a photo or video’s backup date and quality before deleting it to reclaim quota. Google says Storage saver photos backed up before June 1, 2021 do not count against storage, while Storage saver photos backed up after that date do. Deleting a pre-cutoff item that was not using quota will not free space. If you need a photo or video, download it and verify the local copy before removing it from Google Photos.

Gmail
Search for messages with large attachments, then inspect each result. Deleting a message also removes its email record, so keep messages you may need for correspondence, receipts, or account records. Google’s storage manager can surface large items for review; avoid deleting a whole search result set without checking it.
Google Drive and shared files
Prioritize files that your account owns and that you can safely remove or move. Files shared with you generally count against their original owner, not your quota. Exceptions include copies you make, files you add to a shared folder, and files whose ownership is transferred to you. Deleting a shared item you do not own may not reclaim your space.

WhatsApp backups on Android
Google says Android WhatsApp backups count toward Google Account storage. For future backups, excluding videos can reduce backup size. Be especially cautious about deleting an existing backup: Google warns that this is permanent, and you could lose chat history if you change phones or reinstall WhatsApp before a new backup exists.
Trash, spam, and old backups
Items in Drive trash or Gmail spam can continue to use quota until permanently cleared. Review them first, then empty them only if you accept that permanent deletion may be irreversible. Apply the same care to backups: make sure you understand what a backup contains and whether you need it before removing it.

Why the storage number may not change right away
After many files are deleted, Google says storage figures can take 48–72 hours to update accurately. A delayed change does not necessarily mean the cleanup failed. Wait for the figure to refresh before repeating deletions or removing additional files you might want to keep.
If you cannot safely delete anything else
If all the files must remain in Google and none can be removed, there is no cleanup step that makes their occupied space disappear. Google documents buying more Google One storage as the alternative. It adds capacity rather than freeing existing space; compare that option with the effort and loss of cloud access involved in moving files elsewhere.
