How to Find What’s Taking Up Space on Your Windows C: Drive

See how to identify space use on Windows C: with Storage settings and File Explorer, and review cleanup choices before deleting or moving files.

To see what is using space on your Windows C: drive, start at Settings > System > Storage for a category breakdown. Then use File Explorer’s Details view, sorted by Size, to locate large individual files. These built-in tools are available in Windows 10 and Windows 11; check what an item is before deleting or moving it.

Check how much space is free

Open File Explorer, select This PC, and look at the available space for the C: drive. This gives you a starting point to compare against after any cleanup.

Use Storage settings to identify the main category

  3. If Windows offers Cleanup recommendations, open them and review the listed items and the space Windows expects to recover before selecting anything for cleanup.

The category view helps identify where to investigate; it does not tell you which category should be largest on every PC. To inspect other connected drives, look under Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives. You can also change where Windows saves new content.

Find large individual files in File Explorer

Storage categories show broad types of usage. To find particular files, check folders likely to contain large personal or downloaded items, such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads.

  2. Select the Size column heading to sort by file size. If necessary, select it again to put the largest files first.

  3. Review the largest items. Delete files you no longer need, or move files you want to keep to another storage location.

Deleting a file sends it to the Recycle Bin; empty the bin if you want to reclaim the space those deleted files occupy. If you want to keep large personal files but not on the PC, Microsoft suggests moving them to external storage such as a USB drive or SD card. You do not need extra hardware just to find what is using space.

Review cleanup options before removing anything

Use the details in Storage settings and Cleanup recommendations to decide whether an unused app or a listed temporary item is appropriate to remove. Check the names and consequences first. Avoid manually deleting unfamiliar files from Windows or system folders: a category label or a large file size alone is not enough to establish that an item is safe to remove.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.

Previous Windows installation

If cleanup options include files from a previous Windows installation, treat their removal as a rollback decision. Microsoft says deleting them means you cannot go back to the previous Windows version. Microsoft also says the previous version is automatically deleted 10 days after an upgrade, so removing it earlier gives up the remaining rollback option.

Understand what Storage Sense will manage

Storage Sense can automatically remove certain temporary files and manage Recycle Bin contents according to its settings. Microsoft says it works on the system drive, usually C:. With default settings, if enabled, it runs when the device is low on disk space. Downloads and cloud content are not managed by default unless you configure those options.

Check Storage Sense’s settings before turning it on or changing its schedule, especially if you keep files in Downloads or use cloud-synced files. Microsoft notes that in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, the default interval for eligible OneDrive cloud files that have not been opened is 30 days, subject to the configured Storage Sense setting. Making a OneDrive file online-only removes its local copy, not the cloud file; it can be made available locally again when there is an internet connection and enough disk space. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense management.

If you are checking space before a Windows update

Microsoft’s update guidance gives typical free-space estimates of 6–11 GB or more for a feature update and 2–3 GB or more for a quality update. These are guidance figures, not a guarantee for every device; actual requirements vary. Check your own C: drive in File Explorer before deciding what to remove.
