How to Create a Digital Membership or Event Pass for Apple Wallet

Create an Apple Wallet membership card or event ticket by choosing the right pass style, registering and signing a pass, then distributing it through a supported channel.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To create an Apple Wallet membership card or event ticket, choose the matching pass style, register a Pass Type ID and Apple-issued signing certificate, build and sign the pass bundle, then deliver it through an app, website, or email. A companion app is optional. For check-in, use a barcode only if the venue’s scanners can read its format; live updates and contactless NFC acceptance require additional infrastructure.

Choose the right pass type

Apple Wallet pass styles control how information is presented. Use a generic pass for a membership card or similar credential, and an event ticket for admission to a specific event. Wallet also supports store cards, boarding passes, and coupons. See Apple’s Getting Started with Apple Wallet.

Before creating the pass, decide what staff need to see, which identifier your membership or ticketing system will look up, whether the pass is single-use or reusable, and whether its details or status need to change after it is issued. There is no universal Apple-prescribed data schema for every membership or event; the pass and the system that accepts it must agree on the relevant information.

Set up the identifier and signing certificate

  1. In Apple’s Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, register a Pass Type ID for the passes you intend to issue.
  2. Create a Pass Type ID certificate associated with that identifier. Apple specifies that an Account Holder or Admin role is required for this account setup. Follow Apple’s Pass Type ID registration instructions.
  3. Use the associated Apple-issued certificate to sign the pass bundle. Wallet recognizes passes signed with an Apple-issued certificate associated with the developer account, as explained in Apple’s Wallet getting-started guide.

Plan for certificate upkeep. Apple says installed passes continue to function after a certificate expires, but the issuer cannot sign new passes or update existing ones until signing is restored. Revoking the certificate causes passes to stop functioning properly.

(Note: Red light indicates charging, off light indicates charging complete.) Its self-discharge rate is less than 2%, ensuring it can function reliably for approximately 5 to 10 years in standby mode. Therefore, you don't need to worry about it failing when needed. It's environmentally friendly and economical, unlike disposable trackers that stop working once the battery is depleted.

When the distance is less than 120 feet (approximately 37 meters), you can use the Find My app to play a sound and locate it. Even if your items are out of Bluetooth range, the Find My Network (connecting millions of devices worldwide) can help you find them. We use the latest ISO data encryption and protection technology to ensure your location data is encrypted and inaccessible even to manufacturers. With Apple's Find My Network's advanced encryption, no one can see your location.

Build the pass bundle

A Wallet pass is not just an image or a card design. It is a signed bundle containing a JSON description, images, and, optionally, localized content. PassKit is Apple’s framework for creating, distributing, and updating passes. Use Apple’s Wallet Passes documentation for the current source-file format and validation details.

Prepare the fields and artwork to match the chosen pass style and the information your staff or systems need. Include only identifiers and details that serve the actual membership or admission flow. The finished bundle must be signed before it can be distributed as a Wallet pass.

Deliver the pass to members or attendees

Apple supports distributing passes in an app, as a web download, or as an email attachment. A user does not need to install an associated app simply to add a pass. Apple recommends using its Add to Apple Wallet badge on distribution surfaces; its distribution guidance covers the supported routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s membership guidance also identifies SMS, QR codes, and NFC tags as possible ways to direct someone to enrollment or download. In those cases, the QR code or NFC tag points to the relevant flow; it is not itself the signed Wallet pass. See Loyalty and membership passes on Apple platforms.

Make check-in work with your scanners

Wallet supports QR, Aztec, and PDF417 barcodes. Choose a format that your ticketing, access-control, or membership software can decode, and test the complete flow with the scanner hardware expected at the venue. Apple notes that “An optical scanner works better for scanning an iPhone screen than a laser scanner.” Its barcode guidance also suggests showing an account or membership number as text below the barcode, so staff have a fallback if scanning is unavailable.

A barcode in Wallet does not guarantee acceptance at every venue or point of sale. The issuer controls the barcode payload, and the system at the point of use must be able to read and interpret it.

Decide whether passes need live updates

A pass can remain static after issuance. If details or status need to change, Apple provides an optional web-service update flow using webServiceURL and authenticationToken. The issuer’s server registers installed passes, sends a push notification when a pass changes, and supplies a newly signed version. The replacement retains the original pass type identifier and serial number. Apple’s web-service update documentation describes the flow.

Updates add ongoing operational work: securely manage authentication, retain pass and device registrations, sign replacement bundles, and keep the service available. Apple requires HTTPS for the production update service, and Wallet pass update push notifications work only in production. A pass does not update merely because it has been added to Wallet.

Treat contactless NFC acceptance as a separate project

There is an important distinction between using an NFC tag to open a pass enrollment page and tapping a membership pass at a payment terminal. Contactless loyalty or membership acceptance requires an NFC certificate and certified components, including the pass provider, a VAS-certified terminal or reader, and point-of-sale software that supports the VAS modes. Check with the organization’s terminal, POS, and loyalty vendors before planning a tap-to-check-in deployment; Apple outlines the prerequisites in its loyalty and membership guidance.

Apple lists providers including Airship, Lava, Passcreator, PassEntry, PassKit, Paytronix, Pronto CX, Punchh, Stell, and Vibes as having relevant pass-distribution, loyalty or membership, or certified-terminal offerings. Apple says the list is not exhaustive and that listed providers are not affiliated with Apple. The listing does not establish current pricing, availability in every country, or suitability for a particular organization or use case.

Build it yourself or use a managed provider?

Approach What it means What to evaluate
Build with PassKit and your own service You control the pass design and integration. Your organization handles signing, delivery, and any update infrastructure it chooses to run. Developer capacity, integration with the existing ticketing or membership database, certificate operations, and ownership of any update service.
Use a managed pass provider A provider may reduce implementation work for issuance, integrations, segmentation, or update operations. Apple’s provider listing identifies the category but does not compare vendors or endorse one. Verify specific features, integration fit, support, geography, terms, and total price directly with the provider.
Add NFC contactless acceptance This adds a certified pass and compatible terminal, reader, and POS requirements; it is more involved than creating a standard barcode pass. Confirm certification and compatibility across the provider, venue hardware, POS software, and membership or loyalty system before committing.

For either route, check that the chosen barcode works with the actual scanners and that the pass maps cleanly to the identifier used by the existing system. Managed services vary, so Apple’s provider list alone is not evidence of a particular provider’s current features, price, or availability.
