How to Find What’s Slowing Down Your Windows PC

Check what’s happening when Windows feels slow, then use Task Manager, Startup apps, and storage tools to narrow down the cause before changing settings.

To find what’s slowing down your Windows PC, check what is happening while it feels slow—not just what is installed. Note whether the delay occurs at startup, in one app, during multitasking, or everywhere. Then use Task Manager to look for persistent CPU, memory, or disk pressure, and check storage and startup apps if those symptoms fit. High usage is a lead to investigate, not proof that a component or app is faulty.

First, identify when the PC is slow

Windows can feel sluggish for several different reasons, including limited storage, background or startup activity, outdated software, malware, or hardware that no longer meets a workload’s needs. Microsoft notes that multiple factors can contribute, so the symptom alone does not identify the cause (Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance).

  • Slow startup or sign-in: focus on apps that launch automatically.
  • One app is slow: observe resource use while that app is open; note whether the problem began after an update or installation.
  • Multitasking causes slowdowns: check memory and CPU use while your usual set of apps is running.
  • Everything is slow, or storage warnings appear: check disk activity and free space, then consider routine maintenance and hardware limits.

When a slowdown began can help narrow the investigation, but timing alone does not prove that a recent update or installation caused it.

Use Task Manager while the slowdown is happening

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, look for apps or processes using substantial CPU, memory, or disk resources. If needed, select a column heading to sort by that measure.
  3. Open Performance and watch CPU, memory, and disk activity while repeating the task that usually feels slow. A brief spike is different from consistently high activity during the slowdown.
  4. Close apps you recognize and do not need, then repeat the same task and see whether the symptom changes.

A busy resource points to a possible bottleneck, but it does not explain why that resource is busy. Avoid ending unfamiliar Windows processes: stopping the wrong process can disrupt Windows or an app without fixing the underlying issue. Microsoft recommends checking resource use and closing unnecessary apps as part of its performance troubleshooting guidance.

If startup is slow, review Startup apps

In Task Manager, open Startup apps (called Startup in some versions) and review which programs launch when you sign in. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need at startup; an app may still be available to open manually. Change one item at a time and check the next sign-in before changing another.

Microsoft’s impact labels estimate each app’s contribution to startup activity. They are not a general score for how fast the whole PC should run:

Startup impact Microsoft’s stated threshold How to use it
Low Less than 300 milliseconds of total CPU usage and less than 292 KB of total disk usage Low impact alone does not explain a system-wide slowdown.
Medium Less than one second but more than 300 milliseconds of total CPU usage, or less than 3 MB but more than 292 KB of disk usage Consider whether the app is needed at sign-in; assess it alongside your actual startup delay.
High More than one second of total CPU usage or more than 3 MB of disk usage Investigate whether you need the app to launch automatically; the label alone does not mean it is defective.

These are Microsoft’s startup-impact categories, not independent measurements of total PC performance (Startup apps in Windows).

Check free space and routine maintenance

Low free space can affect performance and may interfere with Windows updates. Check available space in File Explorer by opening This PC, or in Settings under System > Storage (labels can vary by Windows version). If space is tight, review the categories Windows identifies and remove files you know you do not need.

  • Use Windows’ temporary-file cleanup options and check the files selected before removing them.
  • Do not manually delete unfamiliar Windows or system files to free space.
  • Install available Windows updates. If malware is plausible—for example, you notice other unexpected behavior—run a quick scan in Windows Security.

Microsoft explains how to manage space with Storage Sense and its drive-space cleanup tools.

Use a clean boot only when a background conflict is plausible

If ordinary checks suggest a conflict between background software and Windows, Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure can help isolate services and startup programs. It is a diagnostic step, not a routine speed-up setting: some functionality may be unavailable while items are disabled.

  1. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for your Windows version.
  2. Record what you disable so you can restore normal startup.
  3. Test whether the original symptom remains, then restore the disabled items as directed and isolate the likely conflict carefully.

Some managed devices may be restricted by network policy. Microsoft also warns that changing advanced options without care can make a PC unusable; if you are unsure, do not improvise beyond its instructions.

Escalate carefully if the problem continues

Prefer reversible checks before recovery options that can remove apps or affect files. Back up important files before using a reset or other recovery method that may cause data loss. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain the available choices and their effects.

If the same workload remains slow after diagnosis and ordinary fixes, the PC may be limited by its hardware rather than a setting. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish a universal RAM or SSD upgrade for an unknown computer. Before considering a part, identify the exact PC model and confirm compatibility. Windows 10 still runs, but support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date (Microsoft performance guidance).
