What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To find what is using your CPU, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and check the Processes tab. If a recognized app is responsible, close it and see whether usage drops. If the load returns or no clear app is responsible, work through reversible checks before isolating startup software or repairing Windows files.
High CPU usage is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Windows guidance covers possible causes such as background apps, startup activity, malware, outdated software and broader performance constraints; it does not set a universal percentage that counts as “too high.”

Find the process using CPU
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, inspect the CPU column and note the app or process with high usage. If the column is not visible, select its heading to sort by CPU.
- Check Performance for an overall view and Startup apps for programs configured to launch with Windows.
- If you recognize the busy app, save your work and close it normally. Watch whether CPU use falls. Avoid ending unfamiliar Windows or system processes just because they appear high in the list.
Task Manager helps identify where the load is coming from; it does not by itself establish why that process is busy. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance recommends monitoring resource use and troubleshooting processes that consume a lot of resources.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Close work you do not need. Shut unnecessary apps and browser tabs, then restart Windows and check whether the CPU load returns.
- Review startup apps. In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable only programs you recognize and do not need to start automatically. Change one or a few items at a time so you can identify whether the change matters.
- Install available updates. Check Windows Update and optional driver updates. If the problem began just after a particular update, see the recovery options below before removing it.
- Scan for malware. Use Windows Security to run a scan; malware is one possible cause of unusual activity.
- Review background app activity. Restrict background permissions for apps that do not need to keep working when you are not using them.
These steps target apps, startup behavior, software and malware, but none is guaranteed to fix every case. Disk cleanup can help with storage or general performance constraints; it is not a direct remedy for a CPU-heavy process.

Use a clean boot to isolate startup conflicts
If the high usage comes back after restart or the responsible app is unclear, a clean boot can help test whether a non-Microsoft service or startup program is involved. Microsoft describes it this way: “A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, making it easier to identify and troubleshoot background software conflicts affecting apps or games.” Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.
- Before changing startup settings, record what you disable so you can restore it.
- Open System Configuration by searching for msconfig. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining services.
- Open Task Manager from System Configuration’s Startup tab, disable the enabled startup items, and restart the PC.
- Use the computer and check whether the high CPU behavior persists. If it stops, re-enable items in a controlled way to identify the conflict.
- When testing is finished, restore normal startup and re-enable the services and startup items you disabled.
A clean boot temporarily disables some functionality. Network policies can restrict this procedure; on a managed, networked computer, Microsoft advises using System Configuration for advanced boot changes only with support-engineer guidance.

Repair Windows system files if corruption is suspected
DISM and System File Checker target missing or corrupted Windows files; they are not general fixes for every high-CPU problem. Microsoft’s documented repair sequence is:
Recommended Free Tools
- Install current Windows updates and restart.
- Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Run
sfc /scannowin the same elevated Command Prompt, then follow the result Windows reports.
Check whether a recent change or aging hardware is involved
If the issue started after an update
If high CPU began immediately after a Windows update, Microsoft’s recovery options include uninstalling a recent update. System Restore can roll back system files and settings, but not personal files. Consider these changes carefully and use the recovery option that matches what changed.

If software checks do not help
Consistently high CPU alongside other performance problems may be a sign that a PC is aging. Microsoft notes that older hardware may not improve much from software steps and that an upgrade may be a long-term option. Utilization alone does not prove the processor is failing. The cited guidance does not define a universal CPU percentage or duration for diagnosing a problem; judge the pattern alongside the process shown in Task Manager and the PC’s broader performance.
Choose the next step by what it tests
| Option | What it targets | Diagnostic or corrective? | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task Manager and closing a recognized app | Individual apps and processes | Primarily diagnostic; closing a busy app changes the load | Low risk when you close an app normally and save work first |
| Startup-app review and background permissions | Apps that launch or run in the background | Changes app behavior and can help identify a source | An app may no longer launch automatically or perform background tasks |
| Clean boot | Non-Microsoft services and startup conflicts | Diagnostic isolation | Some functionality may be temporarily unavailable; restore normal startup afterward |
| DISM and System File Checker | Windows system files | Repair tools, not process diagnostics | Use when missing or corrupted system files are suspected; they may not affect unrelated causes |
| Best performance power mode | Power/performance behavior | Changes a setting; does not identify the process | Can increase power draw, laptop heat and battery drain |
| Hardware upgrade | Limitations associated with aging hardware | Long-term hardware option, not a diagnosis based on CPU use alone | Requires a hardware decision rather than a Windows setting change |
Windows 10 support status
The Microsoft troubleshooting guidance cited here covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. If you are still using Windows 10, that support status is separate from the CPU diagnosis, but it matters when deciding how to keep the PC secure.
