To find what’s making your ASUS laptop slow, check what is happening at the moment you notice the slowdown: use Task Manager to spot heavy CPU, memory, or disk use, then check updates, free storage, MyASUS diagnostics, malware, heat, and startup software as the symptoms point. The cause might be a temporary background task, a single app, or a hardware limit; the sequence below helps narrow it down before you change settings or buy anything.
First, identify when and where the slowdown happens
“Slow” can mean several different things: Windows takes a long time to start, apps open slowly, the whole laptop lags during multitasking, or performance drops only during games or video calls. If only websites or online services are slow, check whether other apps on the laptop respond normally; a network problem is not necessarily a slow computer.

Note when the problem began and whether it followed a Windows update, new app, connected peripheral, or change in workload. Disconnect optional peripherals and see whether the behavior changes, as ASUS recommends in its Windows 11/10 slow-system troubleshooting guide.

Use Task Manager to catch the bottleneck
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc while the laptop is slow. On Processes, look for apps or processes using substantial CPU, memory, or disk resources. On Performance, watch those resource graphs while reproducing the slowdown. Microsoft recommends monitoring these resources to identify processes that may be slowing a PC.

Pay attention to what is busy and when. A brief spike while an app launches is different from a resource staying heavily occupied while the laptop is idle. Check Startup apps for programs that need not launch with Windows. Close only apps you recognize and are not using; do not end unfamiliar processes simply because they appear busy. ASUS also advises checking for background programs, scans, downloads, updates, and applications being shared or used at the same time. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance and ASUS’s troubleshooting steps.
Rule out updates and low storage
Let Windows Update finish
If Windows is downloading or installing updates, allow that work to finish before judging everyday performance. Restart if Windows asks you to. Update activity can temporarily compete with the apps you are using.

Check free space
Open Windows Settings and review System > Storage to see available space. Windows Storage settings and Storage Sense can help identify and remove appropriate temporary files. Review what will be removed; do not delete arbitrary system or personal files. Low free storage can affect performance, and ASUS identifies insufficient memory and hard-disk space as common causes of a slow system in its MyASUS System Diagnosis guidance.
Run MyASUS System Diagnosis if your model supports it
Search the Start menu for MyASUS, open System Diagnosis, and run the slow-system scenario or checks relevant to the symptom, such as memory, disk, application usage, fan, or boot checks. Review any error and follow the troubleshooting suggestions shown. MyASUS offers one-click hardware and customized checks, but not every ASUS device supports System Diagnosis.

If the System Diagnosis tab is missing, that alone does not mean the laptop has failed a test. ASUS says some Microsoft Store installations show only partial features when the required ASUS System Control Interface driver or a supported version is absent; feature availability also varies by device. Check the applicable model’s support information and the ASUS MyASUS System Diagnosis page.
Follow the symptom to malware, heat, or driver checks
If CPU or disk use stays high unexpectedly
Malware can consume CPU and disk resources. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a scan. If the slowdown began after installing an app, consider whether that app or another recently added program is responsible; ASUS notes that malware can sometimes be bundled with free software, not that free software is inherently unsafe.

If performance falls during sustained heavy use
A laptop that slows during gaming, rendering, or another sustained workload may be overheating or having a fan or airflow problem. Check whether the chassis is unusually hot or the fan behaves abnormally, and ensure vents are not blocked. ASUS explains that high device temperatures can reduce performance in its overheating and fan troubleshooting guide. A stand or cooling pad is worth considering only if heat or airflow is implicated; it will not solve a storage, software, or network issue.
If the issue followed a system or driver change
Keep Windows, BIOS, and drivers current through the official update channels for your exact ASUS model, following ASUS’s model-specific directions. A BIOS update is not a casual first troubleshooting step: confirm the applicable instructions and need before attempting one. Microsoft’s performance guidance also notes that older hardware may not improve substantially from software adjustments.

Use a clean boot to test for app or service interference
If the slowdown persists and the checks above do not identify a cause, a Windows clean boot can test whether a non-Microsoft service or startup app is interfering. It temporarily hides Microsoft services and disables other services and startup apps; then you can re-enable items systematically to isolate a conflict. Because this can temporarily remove functionality and involves advanced settings, avoid doing it casually on a managed work device. Microsoft warns that network policy may prevent the procedure and that incorrect advanced boot changes can make a computer unusable.
- Follow Microsoft’s current clean-boot instructions for your Windows version to hide Microsoft services and disable the remaining services and startup apps.
- Restart and check whether the slowdown remains. If it is gone, re-enable services and startup items in a controlled, systematic way, restarting as needed, until the conflict returns.
- When testing is finished, return the computer to Normal Startup and re-enable the items you disabled. Do not leave the laptop in a diagnostic startup configuration.
Escalate only when the checks point to a deeper problem
If MyASUS reports a hardware error, use ASUS’s support or repair path for your model. If software troubleshooting has not helped, ASUS lists restore-point recovery and reset among later options. Back up personal files before a reset. Consider a memory or SSD upgrade only after identifying a relevant bottleneck and confirming that the exact laptop model and configuration support the upgrade; do not assume every ASUS laptop is upgradeable.
For Windows 10 users, note that Microsoft support ended on 2025-10-14. That is a support-status issue, not by itself an explanation for a slow laptop; check Microsoft’s performance guidance for current context and supported Windows advice.
