Then check the fit in the specific style, because not every model is offered in every size and width.
Start with your measurements, not just your usual shoe size
Birkenstock’s US guide maps US sizes to Birkenstock’s European sizing. For example, it pairs women’s US 8–8½ and men’s US 11–11½ with EU 39. This is the brand’s conversion guidance; it does not guarantee that a familiar size in another shoe brand will fit the same.

For a more specific starting point, compare your foot measurements with Birkenstock’s US size chart, which lists length and width in millimeters by size and width. Use the adult or children’s category that applies to you. The fit guide calculator accepts length and width measurements for both your left and right foot, so measure both rather than assuming they are identical. If you are unsure between sizes, the calculator’s guidance is to choose the next size up, noting that feet expand slightly during the day.

Birkenstock’s official US advice is: “Choose Regular for medium to wide feet or Narrow for narrow to medium.” The company also says Narrow fits most women’s feet. Treat that as broad guidance rather than a rule based solely on gender: compare your measured width with the chart and check how your foot sits on the footbed.

Birkenstock identifies the width on product pages and boxes with a footprint symbol: an outlined symbol indicates Regular, while a filled symbol indicates Narrow. Its UK FAQ offers another visual cue: noticeable space at either side of your foot within the footbed may mean you need Narrow. Use the chart’s width ranges alongside this on-foot check; a style’s availability may differ by size and width.
Measure your feet at home
Use the printable template
Birkenstock’s fit guide links to an official printable measurement template. Place your foot with the heel and inside edge aligned to the template’s lines, read the length against its millimeter scale, and trace your foot outline. The template indicates Narrow when the outline falls within its marked curve and Regular when it falls outside it. Print at 100% scale and check the printed millimeter scale with a ruler; a resized printout can distort the result.

Enter measurements in the calculator
If you do not use the template, take each foot’s length and width and enter both sets of measurements in Birkenstock’s calculator. Compare the result with the chart and check whether the recommended size and width are made in the exact style you want; the calculator notes that a style may not be produced in every recommended combination.

Birkenstock’s US fit guide recommends flexing the footbed before trying the sandals by placing one hand under the toe and one under the heel. Open all straps, step in, and fasten them comfortably. Your toes should not touch the footbed edge; Birkenstock recommends about ¼ inch of space around the foot. Use that as brand guidance while checking the fit on your own foot and in the style you selected.

Break in gradually
For break-in, Birkenstock advises starting with loose straps and wearing the footwear around the house for 1–2 hours at a time. Gradually increase wear time as your feet adjust, then tighten the straps as the footbed begins to mold to your feet. Persistent discomfort is not a reason to ignore a poor fit.
