Connect to OverTheWire Bandit by opening a terminal and running ssh [email protected] -p 2220. When asked for a password, enter bandit0. These are the connection details listed on the official Bandit Level 0 page.

Connect to Bandit Level 0

  1. Open a terminal or another SSH client that supports an interactive password prompt.
  2. Run ssh [email protected] -p 2220. The command specifies the Bandit host, the initial username, and the non-default SSH port.
  3. At the password prompt, enter bandit0. The official Level 0 instructions describe the goal as logging into the game using SSH.

Find the password for Level 1

After logging in as bandit0, the next password is in a file named readme in the home directory. The official Level 0 to Level 1 instructions direct you to use that password to log in as bandit1 over SSH on port 2220.

For each later level, use the password you found for that level to connect as the next level’s username. Keep personal notes: OverTheWire says passwords are not saved automatically and may change.

If the connection fails

  • Check that the username is bandit0 for the first login and that the hostname is spelled bandit.labs.overthewire.org.
  • Make sure the command includes -p 2220; omitting it makes the SSH client use its default port instead.
  • Do not use bandit0 as the password for later accounts. Each later login requires the password for the relevant level.
  • If those details are correct and the connection still fails, check whether your network restricts SSH traffic or whether the service is available. The official instructions provide the connection details but do not establish live service availability.
