It is not one universal download: the right driver depends on the adapter model and your operating-system version. Start by identifying both, then look for a matching package from your computer or adapter manufacturer.
What an 802.11n WLAN driver does
The wireless adapter is the hardware that connects a computer to Wi-Fi; its driver is the software interface that allows the operating system to communicate with it. Microsoft lists 802.11n among wireless network technologies, but that standard does not identify a driver package for every computer. The driver must match the installed adapter and a supported operating system. See Microsoft’s overview of wireless networking in Windows.

How to find the driver that matches your PC
- Identify your Windows version. Check which Windows edition and version is installed so you can confirm that a driver package supports it.
- Find the adapter in Device Manager. Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Select the wireless adapter, open Properties, then the Driver tab to inspect its driver date and version. If it is disabled, enable it there.
- Match the package to the hardware and operating system. Search the computer maker’s support page using the exact computer model, or the adapter maker’s page using the exact adapter model. Confirm the package supports both that adapter and your Windows version; “802.11n” alone is not enough to establish a match.
- Install the appropriate package. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If Windows does not detect the adapter, Microsoft says a driver may need to be installed manually from the computer manufacturer. Do not install a package merely because a search result calls it an 802.11n driver. Read Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Why your adapter or Wi-Fi network may be missing
Use the symptom to choose what to check next. Reinstalling a driver is not the answer to every connection problem.

Microsoft states, “If your wireless network adapter isn’t listed in Device Manager, then Windows doesn’t detect it.” Check whether the adapter is disabled or whether the computer manufacturer provides a driver for your exact model. If it remains absent, the issue may involve hardware detection rather than a network password or router setting.

The adapter appears, but your Wi-Fi network does not
The adapter might not support the frequency band used by the network, or its driver may filter out that frequency. If the adapter exposes a Wireless Mode or Band setting, check the manufacturer’s documentation and confirm that the adapter and access point have a compatible band and Wi-Fi mode. The available settings depend on the adapter, driver, and operating system.
The network appears, but connection fails or is unreliable
Check the adapter’s driver state and the access point’s configuration, as well as its software. A router configured without 802.11n mode may not provide the connection expected from an 802.11n adapter. Authentication and other access-point settings can also affect the result; the symptom alone does not prove that the driver needs replacement.

When to adjust 802.11n settings
Intel’s guidance, last reviewed February 5, 2025, recommends Auto channel width for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz for the Intel adapters covered by its article, and advises updating both adapter and router software. It also says to configure the access point or Wi-Fi router for 11n mode. These recommendations are specific to the Intel products in scope, not a universal recipe for every adapter. Do not change advanced properties unless they exist for your adapter and its manufacturer documents their use. Intel notes that property names and available features vary with the access point, adapter, driver version, and operating system; some settings appear only on legacy adapters. In the relevant Intel setting, HT refers to 802.11n and VHT to 802.11ac. A setting name or value that applies to one adapter may not apply to another.

What to record before deeper troubleshooting
For a persistent or complex failure, establish the current state and note when the problem happens before resetting the network stack, deleting saved profiles, removing the adapter or driver, or restarting. These actions can remove diagnostic evidence or temporarily change behavior. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance covers supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 versions; behavior can vary by Windows version, adapter, driver model, access point, and authentication method. - Record the adapter name, driver date, and driver version shown in Device Manager.
- Note whether the adapter is enabled and whether the expected network appears in the available networks list.
- Record when the failure occurs and any relevant access-point changes.
When a replacement adapter is an option
A replacement is worth considering only if the built-in adapter is unsupported, faulty, or not detected after checking the manufacturer’s driver guidance. Compatibility depends on the exact computer, operating system, physical interface, supported bands and Wi-Fi modes, and access-point configuration. An internal card also has to fit and be supported by the computer; a USB adapter has its own driver and operating-system requirements.
