Check the app’s upload-quality setting first, then inspect the original file and prepare a crop that matches the platform’s commonly reported size guidance. No setting or export recipe guarantees that every photo will look identical after posting.
Why does Instagram ruin my photo quality?
A photo can look different after posting because Instagram processes media for upload and display. That processing may resize or compress an image, which can reduce apparent sharpness or detail. Samsung also describes automatic image-size and resolution adjustment when sharing to Instagram. These explanations do not establish that Instagram processing is the only cause of blur in any particular post.

The file you choose matters, too. A photo saved from a messaging app, captured as a screenshot, or exported repeatedly may already have lost detail before Instagram receives it. That is a troubleshooting possibility, not a measured finding about every upload. Compare the post against the actual original file—not just another copy in your camera roll.

1. Check the high-quality upload setting
Look in Instagram’s current settings for an option called Upload at highest quality. Third-party guides place it under different labels and paths, including Media Quality and Data Usage and Media Quality; menus can change between app versions. If you cannot find it, use settings search if available, or inspect the media and data sections.

Turning the option on may make uploads take longer, according to a 2023 guide. It is not a promise that Instagram will skip resizing or compression.
2. Check the original file
- Open the original photo in your device’s gallery or photos app and check that it is sharp at the subject you want people to notice.
- Make sure you are comparing the post with that original, rather than a screenshot or a copy that has been sent through another app or exported multiple times.
- Review the crop. If the subject is already cut off or small in the source, upload processing cannot restore the missing detail.
If the original itself looks soft, changing Instagram’s setting is unlikely to recover detail that is not in the file.

3. Prepare a crop that fits the reported guidance
A secondary article updated in 2023 and quoting Instagram Help Center reports that photos between 320 and 1080 pixels wide, with an aspect ratio from 1.91:1 to 4:5, are not resized; it says wider images are reduced to 1080 pixels. This is commonly reported guidance, not a currently verified official specification: the current Help Center page was not available to confirm it. Use it as a practical crop target, not a guarantee of how every upload will be handled.
For a portrait, landscape, or square image, choose a crop that keeps the important subject visible and falls within that reported ratio range where practical. Avoid enlarging a small image simply to reach a pixel target; enlargement does not add real detail.

What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
Change one thing at a time: enable the high-quality upload option, then compare a post with its actual original; separately review whether the source file or crop is already limiting detail. This helps distinguish an app-setting issue from a source-image issue without assuming a single cause. The sources available do not establish a universal best file format, export-quality value, or setting combination for every phone and post type.
Meta Engineering’s account of HDR video on Instagram for iOS describes the creator’s device preparing a video file for upload and Instagram producing different versions for playback. That is an example of media processing for video, not evidence about how Instagram processes still photos, so it should not be used to infer a photo-specific compression rule.
