How to Find Saved iPhone Passwords When Face ID Is On

Face ID unlocks access to saved credentials; it is not a password to look up. Find saved iPhone passwords in Passwords on iOS 18 or Settings on earlier versions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find a saved password on an iPhone, open the Passwords app on iOS 18 or later, authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode, and select the saved entry. On iOS 17 or earlier, go to Settings > Passwords instead. Face ID is a way to unlock your saved credentials; it is not a separate password you can reveal.

How do I find my saved passwords with Face ID?

Use the steps for your iOS version:

iOS version Where to go How to view a saved password
iOS 18 or later Open the Passwords app and unlock with Face ID or Touch ID, or enter your device passcode. Select a category or shared group, then select the website or app entry. Tap the Password field to view or copy the password.
iOS 17 or earlier Open Settings > Passwords and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, or enter your device passcode. Select the website or app entry.

These navigation steps follow Apple’s instructions for finding saved passwords. If Face ID is unavailable or does not authenticate, use the device passcode when prompted. That passcode unlocks the credential list; it is not the password for a saved website or app.

What does “Face ID password” mean?

Face ID is biometric authentication. It can authorize access to saved credentials or help you sign in, but it is not a text password stored for you to look up. The device passcode, Apple Account password, and saved website or app passwords are different credentials. The steps here locate saved entries; they do not recover an unknown iPhone passcode or Apple Account password.

How can I sign in without reading the password?

On a supported website or app, Password AutoFill can fill a saved password or passkey for you. Apple’s general setting is Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords. For Safari password autofill with Face ID, Apple’s instructions point to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and the Password AutoFill control. To see which apps can use Face ID, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Other Apps. Menu names can vary by iOS version. See Apple’s AutoFill and password settings guide and Apple’s Face ID setup and use instructions.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

A passkey is not a password that you can reveal as text. For a supported sign-in, Face ID or Touch ID can authenticate with the passkey without requiring you to type a password.

What if the saved password is missing?

  • Check the full list. In the Passwords app, look under All rather than only a specific category or shared group. On earlier iOS, check the Passwords screen and the selected group.
  • Look in Deleted or Recently Deleted. An entry removed recently may still be there.
  • Check iCloud Keychain across devices. If you use other Apple devices, confirm that iCloud Keychain is on and that those devices use the same Apple Account. Keychain keeps credentials current across approved devices.
  • Check where you save passwords. An entry appears in Apple Passwords only if it was saved there or in Keychain. If you chose a third-party password manager, look in that manager’s app instead.
  • Consider other credential types. Passwords can also contain passkeys, verification codes, Wi-Fi passwords, and credentials in shared groups—not just website passwords.

Apple’s saved-password instructions cover searching and checking deleted entries, while its Passwords app guide describes the credential types and app features.

Can Siri find a saved password?

Apple gives examples such as “Show my passwords” and “What is my Hulu password?” for asking Siri to find passwords. You still need to authenticate to access the credential. If Siri does not show the entry, use the Passwords app or Settings path for your iOS version.
