Where to look for Tigray displacement and aid updates
IOM Ethiopia Displacement Tracking Matrix
The IOM Ethiopia DTM portal publishes displacement assessments and snapshots. Its listings include a Tigray Region Snapshot Report for Household Needs Assessment Round 1, dated August 2025. Open the report itself before quoting a number: check the reference period, locations covered, and how the assessment defines the population or need being counted.

UNHCR Ethiopia Operational Data Portal
The UNHCR Ethiopia Operational Data Portal collects dated population-movement records, statistics, and protection-monitoring reports. Use the document date and its stated population category rather than treating the portal as a live regional count. For example, the displayed total of 1,125,947 refugees and asylum-seekers as of 30 June 2026 is not a count of internally displaced people in Tigray.
ReliefWeb and OCHA
ReliefWeb is a humanitarian information service provided by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). OCHA says its editorial team curates content for humanitarian workers and decision-makers. It is useful for discovering reports, maps, and infographics from multiple publishers; when possible, follow a listing back to the agency’s original document to check its evidence and definitions. OCHA identifies several ways to follow ReliefWeb, including its website, social media, subscriptions, ReliefWeb Response, and OCHA’s corporate site, API, or RSS.

UNICEF situation reports
UNICEF Ethiopia situation reports can provide child-focused and multisector response information. UNICEF’s year-end 2025 report says it launched a Tigray IDP return support plan in October 2025 that included an estimated 574,000 displaced people. It also says large-scale movement back to areas of origin had not occurred at the time covered because constraints persisted. These are statements from that report, not a description of conditions in October 2026.
How to tell what a number actually describes
Keep the publication date separate from the data reference date. A report published in 2026 may describe data collected in 2024 or earlier. Also retain the geography and population definition: a regional total, a zone assessment, a site survey, and a count of returnees are not interchangeable.

- Hardcover journal with 240 line-ruled pages (120 sheets)
- Built-in elastic closure and ribbon bookmark
- Includes an expandable inner storage pocket and a pen holder
- Publisher and method: identify the agency and whether the item is a statistical sheet, assessment, protection-monitoring report, or secondary summary.
- Publication date and reference date: record both. Use the data date when describing when a figure applies.
- Geographic coverage: note whether the report covers Tigray as a whole, a zone, a woreda, or specific sites.
- Population category: distinguish internally displaced people (IDPs), IDP returnees, refugees, and asylum-seekers.
- Assessment method: look for definitions, collection methods, and limitations before comparing estimates.
For instance, UNHCR’s Protection Monitoring and Solutions report for Adigrat in December 2025 was published on 2 March 2026. It describes focus groups, key-informant interviews, service-facility mapping, and direct observation. Attribute findings from it to that report and locality; an Adigrat monitoring exercise does not establish conditions across all of Tigray.
How to read the available figures without mixing them
The following figures have different reference dates and source contexts. They are useful as dated measurements, not as a single continuous series or a verified current count for October 2026.
Rank #3
| Publisher and source | Figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| UNHCR Ethiopia, 2025 statistics sheet | 1,919,993 as of 31 December 2025 | IDPs in Ethiopia |
| UNHCR Ethiopia, 2025 statistics sheet | 2,813,489 as of 31 December 2025 | IDP returnees in Ethiopia |
| UNHCR Ethiopia, 2025 statistics sheet | 761,284 as of 31 December 2025 | IDPs in Tigray |
| UNHCR Ethiopia, 2025 statistics sheet | 1,123,137 as of 31 December 2025 | IDP returnees in Tigray |
| IOM, 2026 plan citing IOM DTM data | 3.3 million as of May 2024 | IDPs in Ethiopia; the 2026 plan cites an older reference date |
| IOM, 2026 plan citing IOM DTM data | 2.58 million, with 38% in Tigray; data refer to May 2024 | Returning IDPs in Ethiopia and the share located in Tigray |
UNHCR’s “IDP returnee” category is distinct from people currently displaced. IOM’s figures in a 2026 plan refer to May 2024, while the UNHCR sheet gives figures as of 31 December 2025. Do not calculate a trend or imply a like-for-like comparison from these values without aligned dates, definitions, and methods.
A practical search and verification routine
- Search the IOM DTM portal for “Tigray displacement snapshot” or “Ethiopia DTM Tigray household needs assessment.”
- Search the UNHCR Ethiopia portal for “Tigray IDP statistics” or “Tigray protection monitoring report.” Open the dated report rather than relying on a search-result snippet.
- Use ReliefWeb to discover relevant updates from OCHA, UN agencies, and humanitarian partners. Follow the discovery listing to the originating publisher’s document where available.
- Before sharing a finding, record the publisher, publication date, data reference period, geographic coverage, population definition, and assessment method.
- If a report does not provide a current region-wide figure, state its actual reference date and scope instead of presenting it as current or representative of all Tigray.
What current status can—and cannot—be established
The dated sources listed here do not establish a single consolidated October 2026 figure for displacement in Tigray or a current region-wide account of aid delivery and humanitarian access. For a present-tense update, check the portals for the newest dated OCHA, cluster, agency, or partner report available. If none provides a current regional measurement, give readers the latest documented reference date and the locations covered rather than implying that an older figure is live.
