Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore sharing a conflict update, check what it could reveal beyond its words: a person’s identity, a precise location, when someone was there, or who is connected to whom. Remove details that are not necessary, delay or withhold sensitive posts, and remember that no checklist can make every post safe in every conflict.
Why a conflict update can reveal more than it says
Personal data protection is a safety and dignity issue, not just a matter of keeping an account private. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) writes in its Handbook on data protection in humanitarian action (2024): “Protecting individuals’ personal data is an integral part of protecting their life, integrity and dignity.”

A post may expose information through its text, image, timing, file metadata, or the way people communicate around it. A photo might show a face, a landmark, a sign, or a screen in the background. A file may contain location, date, time, or device details. Communication metadata can also reveal contacts and patterns of interaction, even when message contents are not public. The ICRC and humanitarian partners identify surveillance, interception, metadata, and hacking among the risks of digital dialogue during emergencies (2020 tip sheet).
Use this check before you publish
- Clarify the purpose. Ask what readers need to know and remove details that do not serve that purpose. Could the update identify a person, source, family, shelter, route, facility, group, or humanitarian operation?
- Check the place and time. Avoid a precise live location or geotag when it could expose someone. Consider waiting until you have left before posting. This is a risk-reduction suggestion from CPJ’s U.S. journalist safety guidance, not a universal rule for every conflict or situation (CPJ U.S. journalist safety kit).
- Inspect the image and file. Look for identifiable faces, distinctive backgrounds, landmarks, signs, documents, device screens, or other clues. File metadata can include location, date, and time; EFF notes that photo metadata may also include a camera model and photographer’s name (CPJ digital and physical safety guidance; EFF protest imagery guidance). Remove metadata from sensitive files before sharing, but do not assume that doing so removes clues visible in the image.
- Consider the people shown. Where possible, seek consent from identifiable people in a public image. Then consider separately whether identification could put them at risk: agreement to be photographed does not make every later use safe. Avoid publishing images of people in detention or exposing vulnerable people to public curiosity.
- Review the account and channel. Consider who can see the post, what the service may retain, and whether your account and device protections are current. A private account or encrypted communication does not control what happens after a post is published: recipients may copy or screenshot it, and metadata or service-side data may still matter. CPJ’s Digital Safety Kit offers journalist-focused account and device safety guidance.
- Pause when the risk is uncertain. Do not treat operationally sensitive details as routine update material. If publishing could expose people, movements, or humanitarian work, withholding the post may be the safer choice.
Location, timing, and images need separate checks
Location can be obvious or indirect
A geotag or a caption naming a place is an obvious clue, but a recognizable building, road sign, landscape, or other distinctive background can also help identify where an image was taken. Turning off geolocation for posts does not remove those visual clues. CPJ’s geolocation advice is written for U.S. journalists; the underlying risk of revealing a location may apply more broadly, but the safest choice depends on the people and conditions involved.

Timing can reveal movement
A live post can show that someone is at a particular place now, or suggest when a route or facility is being used. Delaying a post until after leaving can reduce that immediate exposure, though it cannot erase the information or prevent others from drawing conclusions from it.
Metadata is not the same as visible content
Metadata is information attached to a file or generated by communications, rather than the words or scene a viewer sees. It may provide clues such as when or where a photo was made, while communication patterns can reveal relationships or routines. Removing metadata can reduce one avenue of exposure, but it cannot make a person or place unrecognizable in the image itself.

Consent does not replace a safety assessment
Before posting another person’s image, consider whether they can be identified and what could happen if the image reaches an unintended audience. EFF’s advice on protest imagery recommends seeking consent from identifiable people where possible. In a conflict setting, also consider whether a person may be vulnerable, under pressure, or exposed to consequences they cannot easily anticipate. The ICRC warns that information can harm civilians and humanitarian work; its 2025 questions and answers on harmful information discusses the risks of false, misleading, hateful, and otherwise harmful content.
There is no universally safe platform setting
Privacy settings and secure channels can reduce particular risks, but they do not guarantee anonymity or safety. A public post can be copied beyond its intended audience; a private channel still involves devices, accounts, recipients, and a service that may retain data. Humanitarian guidance identifies surveillance, interception, metadata, and hacking as concerns, while CPJ’s recommendations are tailored to journalists and their source-protection needs. No single app or setting can be called universally safe on the basis of these sources. For a broader account of digital threats to civilians during armed conflict, see the ICRC’s 2023 report.

When not posting is the better choice
Do not publish if you cannot tell whether the update could identify a vulnerable person, expose a location or movement, compromise a source, or create a foreseeable risk for civilians or humanitarian operations. Conditions and threats can change quickly. A careful pause is a valid privacy decision—not a failure to inform.
These practices address general risk mechanisms, not every local threat. The cited guidance comes from humanitarian organizations, journalists’ safety resources, and EFF’s protest-imagery advice; platform behavior, local law, and operational conditions vary.
