Choose a student scooter around the real commute, the rider’s ability to handle it, and the full cost of owning it—not mileage or styling alone. This guide assumes a seated motor scooter and uses India as a working example because local licensing, helmet and registration rules differ. Check the rules where you live; advice about stand-up e-scooters may not apply to seated electric scooters.
What should I look for when buying my first scooter?
Start with a normal week, not a showroom feature list. Note the student’s daily distance, road types, hills, traffic, what they carry, where they will park, and whether they can charge at home or school. Then check whether authorized service and spare parts are accessible. Suzuki Motorcycle India’s first-scooter guide also recommends considering comfort, handling, storage, safety equipment, running costs, build quality, after-sales support and total on-road cost.

Try the route in mind
Take a test ride on a suitable route where safe and lawful. Suzuki’s guide puts it simply: “Take a test ride to check comfort and handling.” Check that the rider can manage low-speed turns and parking, reach the controls comfortably, and sit with enough legroom. Floorboard space, seat height and scooter weight matter in daily use, especially when maneuvering in a crowded lot. A short ride will not prove long-term comfort, but it can reveal obvious fit or control problems.
Use a practical buying checklist
- Commute: How far is a typical day, and does it include faster roads, steep sections or heavy traffic?
- Rider fit: Can the student comfortably control the scooter, make a slow turn and park it?
- Carrying needs: What helmet, books, laptop or other daily items must fit?
- Parking and charging: Is there secure parking, and, for an electric scooter, a suitable place to charge?
- Ownership support: Where are the nearest authorized service center and parts source?
- Legal requirements: Is the rider eligible for that vehicle class, and what registration, insurance and equipment rules apply locally?
Is mileage important when choosing a scooter?
Yes, but mileage is one input to running cost—not a complete measure of value. For a petrol scooter, compare fuel economy for the specific model and calculate fuel use against the student’s usual distance and local fuel price. Manufacturer figures should not be treated as a guaranteed result for an individual rider: route, traffic, load and riding conditions affect actual consumption. No current model-to-model petrol mileage or price comparison is established here, so use current local specifications and get a written on-road quote from the dealer.

For an electric scooter, compare a specific model’s usable range with the daily trip and a reserve, then check charge access, charging time, electricity tariff and battery warranty terms. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s webpage gives an average electric two-wheeler range of about 84 km per charge, but its publication year and measurement basis are not stated; it is an undated broad average, not a current market measurement or a promise for any model. Bureau of Energy Efficiency information on electric vehicles.
Compare the full cost, not just fuel or electricity
Ask for the on-road price rather than comparing ex-showroom prices alone. Budget for registration, insurance, a correctly certified helmet and other necessary gear, fuel or electricity, scheduled service, tyres, and—on an electric model—battery warranty exclusions or other battery-related costs. Suzuki’s guide specifically advises including registration, insurance, accessories and add-ons in purchase-cost planning. The right calculation depends on local rates and the student’s travel pattern; a lower energy bill alone does not establish lower total ownership cost.

Petrol or electric: which suits a student?
There is no universal winner. A petrol scooter may suit a student without dependable charging access; an electric scooter may suit a route and parking setup where charging is practical. Compare the actual model, warranty, service support and local energy costs rather than assuming either technology will be cheaper to own.

Electric scooter charging and battery care
Confirm that charging is allowed and convenient at the places the student parks, and follow the maker’s instructions for charging and storage. This is a UK rule described in that guidance, not a rule to apply to other countries or to conflate stand-up e-scooters with locally registered seated electric scooters. Check the relevant local authority’s rules for the vehicle being considered.
How to assess safety and legal requirements
Inspect the basics before purchase: brakes, tyres, lights, reflectors, mirrors and steering. Meghalaya government road-safety guidance advises checking these items and carrying a helmet when riding a scooter or motorcycle; treat it as local Meghalaya/India guidance, not a universal statement of law. Choose a properly fitting helmet
In India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ 2020 Helmet for Riders of Two Wheeler Motor Vehicles (Quality Control) Order specifies IS 4151:2015 and requires the BIS Standard Mark. The order took effect on June 1, 2021 and says the latest standards and amendments notified by BIS apply. Check that the helmet fits the rider and carries the applicable current certification mark; a product listing alone does not establish compliance. Licensing depends on the rider’s age, location and the exact vehicle classification. A Government of India release from 2019 described licence specifications for 16–18-year-olds driving gearless electric two-wheelers up to 4.0 kW; that historical release is not enough to establish a student’s current eligibility. Ask the seller what registration and insurance are required for the exact vehicle, then verify independently with the relevant authority or insurer. A scooter’s marketing label or engine or motor specification does not, by itself, settle the rider’s legal eligibility.
Electric-vehicle compliance in India
A Lok Sabha answer dated December 11, 2024 reports that BIS formulated IS 18590:2024 for electric power trains of L-category vehicles and IS 18073:2023 for electric traction motor performance and functional requirements. Buyers can ask a dealer for applicable type-approval and compliance documentation. These standards do not certify a particular model on their own. Lok Sabha answer dated December 11, 2024.

Bring the items the student actually carries and check whether they fit in the under-seat compartment and remain practical to retrieve. Check whether the helmet fits, and whether hooks, a front compartment or floorboard space help with other daily items. Published compartment volume is useful for comparing specifications, but it does not show the compartment’s shape or whether a particular helmet will fit.

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not an independent test or recommendation. Check the exact model year and try the student’s usual items in person. What maintenance should a student plan for?
Before committing, check the owner’s manual for the service schedule and tyre-pressure specification, and find out where the scooter can be serviced. Suzuki recommends keeping to regular service schedules, maintaining proper tyre pressure and checking brakes and lights periodically. Meghalaya’s road-safety guidance notes that incorrect tyre pressure can contribute to excessive wear, difficult steering and skidding, especially on wet roads. Use the scooter’s manual for the correct pressure rather than relying on a generic figure. Suzuki guidance; Meghalaya road-safety guidance.
