Do not assume a shutdown makes a game unplayable—or that an offline mode will appear automatically. The answer depends on the exact title, client version, platform, region, shutdown date and the services the game uses. A game may keep its single-player mode after matchmaking closes, while a failed authentication check can block even local content. A private server is a separate question: it needs a compatible client, working server software or an emulator, and a legally supportable way to use the game data.
Use the process below to establish four separate results: offline play works, LAN or dedicated-server play works, a private server is available, or no verified option has been found. Record the evidence rather than relying on a shutdown rumor or a forum post.

What a “server shutdown” actually changes
A live game is usually a collection of services rather than one server. The publisher may close matchmaking while leaving other functions running, or may disable the authentication service that the client checks before it loads any content. The U.S. Government Publishing Office noted in its 2015 rulemaking that a matchmaking server can be offline while a game remains playable, but an authentication failure can prevent local gameplay entirely: Federal Register, October 28, 2015.

Because these components can fail separately, the sentence “the servers are shutting down” is not enough evidence to answer whether a particular game will work offline.

Step 1: Find the official shutdown notice
Start with the publisher, developer or platform notice for the exact game. Electronic Arts maintains a service-update page that explains that some retired services leave games playable offline, but the result is title-specific: Electronic Arts Service Updates. Platform notices can add details about affected editions and systems; PlayStation’s guidance is at Support for games you can play online.
Copy the notice into your notes and record:
- the announced closure date and time zone;
- the exact platforms and editions affected;
- the countries or regions covered;
- the client versions named in the notice;
- whether sign-in, matchmaking, cloud services, purchases, downloadable content or all online functions are ending;
- any promise of an offline patch, LAN mode, dedicated-server files, a final client update or continued single-player access; and
- whether the wording describes a temporary outage, a delisting, or permanent service retirement.
A store page, social-media comment or community post can point you to the notice, but it should not replace it. If there is no official statement, mark the closure date as unverified instead of treating a rumor as a deadline.
Step 2: Identify the exact build and platform
Offline behavior can differ between a console edition, a PC launcher build, a subscription version and a later remaster. Write down the platform, operating-system version, storefront or launcher, game build number, region and account type. If you own multiple editions, test each one separately.
Do this before the shutdown while the official services still respond. Launch the game while connected, then disconnect the network in a controlled way and repeat the launch. Test an existing local save, start a new game, load installed downloadable content and enter any local or LAN menu. A successful test is evidence for that particular build and date, not a guarantee for every platform.
Step 3: Look for an official offline path
Search the publisher’s support articles, patch notes, developer FAQ and final-update notes for explicit statements about offline use. The strongest evidence is an instruction that names the game and explains what changes after closure. Look for these terms:

- offline mode or offline flag;
- LAN or local network support;
- dedicated-server package or server binaries;
- single-player access after service retirement;
- local save or data-transfer procedure; and
- a final client update that removes a mandatory online check.
“The game has a single-player campaign” does not prove that it will launch without authentication. Likewise, a menu labelled “LAN” may still require a publisher login. Confirm the requirement in an official statement or by testing the final supported build with the network disconnected.
If the developer supplies a patch, install it while the service is live, then test again offline. Preserve the installer, patch notes and configuration instructions with your lawful copy. Do not wait until after closure to discover that the update was available only through a retired download service.

These are different outcomes:
- Offline: one device runs the game without contacting a remote service.
- LAN: devices on the same local network connect directly or through a host on that network.
- Dedicated server: the developer supplies a server program that can host sessions, often on a separate machine.
- Private server: an unofficial service or replacement server—often an emulator of the original protocol—accepts connections from a modified or configured client.
A game can support LAN but not true offline play. It can also have a dedicated-server tool without any public private-server project. Keep the outcomes separate in your notes and in any advice you give to other players.
Step 5: Assess whether a private server is real and usable
Search for a maintained project that supports the exact game and client version. A credible project should publish enough technical information for an independent check:
- supported client builds, patches and platforms;
- protocol or compatibility notes;
- server binaries or reproducible build instructions;
- dependencies and operating-system requirements;
- installation and configuration steps;
- release history, issue tracking or other visible maintenance activity;
- an explanation of how authentication works; and
- a clear statement about which features are missing or experimental.
A forum comment saying “a server exists” is only a lead. Treat a download with no source, version information or release history as unverified. An emulator that worked for an old client may stop working after the publisher changes the protocol or requires a newer build. Conversely, a server project may support only a limited mode, map set or region.

Use a comparison record like this for every candidate:

| Distribution and permission | What the project distributes, what you must supply yourself, and whether its use is legally supportable where you live. |
If a cell cannot be established, write “not stated” and identify the project or publisher that omitted the information. Never fill the gap with a guess.
Step 6: Check the legal boundary before joining or hosting
Copyright, contract and platform rules differ by country and by use. The United States adopted a limited 2015 exemption for people who lawfully acquired complete games when an external authentication server had ceased access; it also addressed qualifying institutional preservation. The rule does not create a general right to operate an alternative online multiplayer service or to redistribute the game’s code, executable files or other assets. Read the actual rule at the U.S. Government Publishing Office.
That distinction matters in practice. A preservation copy of your lawfully acquired files is not the same as uploading those files for strangers. Replacing a failed authentication check for personal use is not the same as advertising a public server. A project may also have its own terms, and a platform account agreement can impose additional restrictions. If you plan to distribute files, host a public service or modify a console edition, obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice rather than assuming the exemption applies.
Step 7: Protect your account and computer
Unofficial servers and “offline unlockers” create security risks in addition to compatibility problems. Use a cautious process:

- Prefer a source repository with visible history, tagged releases and documentation over an anonymous file host.
- Check that the release supports your exact client version before downloading it.
- Scan files with current security software and, where possible, compare a published checksum.
- Install and test in a separate user account or isolated machine when practical.
- Back up your original game files, saves and configuration before changing them.
- Never enter your publisher, storefront or email password into an unofficial launcher or server website.
- Use a separate account only if the project’s terms and your local law allow it, and never give a third party reusable session tokens.
- Remove the modification and restore your backup if the program requests unexplained privileges, injects advertising, disables security tools or changes unrelated system files.
Do not assume that a project is safe because it has a popular chat server or many downloads. Provenance, maintenance, version compatibility and malware checks all matter.
How to document a defensible conclusion
When you publish or share your findings, include enough detail for another player to reproduce them:
- game title, edition and client build;
- platform, launcher and region;
- date and time of the test, including time zone;
- shutdown date stated by the publisher;
- network conditions used for each test;
- which functions launched, loaded saves, created a local game or connected over LAN;
- which authentication, cloud, inventory or downloadable-content functions failed;
- the exact official notices and technical project pages consulted; and
- a confidence label: confirmed by an official statement, reproduced in testing, supported by a maintained project, or not verified.
Report the results in separate lines. For example: “Offline campaign: confirmed on PC build X as of date Y. LAN: not tested. Private server: project found, but client compatibility not stated. Cloud saves: unavailable.” This format prevents a reader from mistaking one working feature for a promise that the whole game survives.

Some titles answer the question directly. Supercell’s official FAQ: The End of Squad Busters says: “No. Squad Busters won’t be playable offline or through private servers once the official servers close.” The statement is at Supercell’s FAQ.
That is stronger than an inference from the game’s menus or from a community server announcement. For this title, the documented result is neither offline play nor private-server access after closure. You should still check the notice for the affected platforms and date if you own a particular edition, but there is no basis in that FAQ for promising a LAN workaround or an unofficial replacement.

Preserve what you can before the deadline
If the publisher permits continued use, install the final client and any announced offline patch before the shutdown. Keep lawful backups of installers, patches, save files and configuration data, and record the build number. Test a clean launch with the network disconnected. If downloadable content is tied to an online entitlement, verify that it has been installed and activated while the entitlement service still operates; a backup of incomplete or unlicensed files may not restore access later.
Preservation does not mean copying or distributing assets you do not have permission to share. Keep your archive private, label the source and version, and retain the publisher’s instructions alongside it so you know what was tested and what remains dependent on an external service.
Troubleshooting the most common outcomes
The game reaches the menu but cannot load a save
Check whether the save depends on cloud synchronization, a remote profile or server-hosted progression. Try a local save created before the shutdown and disable cloud synchronization only after making a backup. If every save requires the remote profile, the menu alone is not evidence of offline support.

Separate installed content from entitlement verification. Reinstall or activate the content while the official service remains available, then test with the network disconnected. If activation still requires a live check, record downloadable content as online-dependent even though the base campaign works.
A private server accepts a connection, but progression or matchmaking is broken
Check the project’s supported client build and feature list. A server may implement login and a test map without reproducing inventory, progression, events or all matchmaking behavior. Record each working and missing feature instead of calling the entire game functional.
The launcher insists on signing in
Look for an official offline flag or final client update. Do not bypass authentication by downloading an unknown executable. If the publisher has not documented a supported path, classify offline play as unverified and preserve the exact error message for future reference.
The project download has no version or source information
Do not run it on your main installation or provide account credentials. Without provenance, maintenance and compatibility details, it does not meet the evidence standard for a verified private-server option.
The practical answer to “Will it still work?”
Answer only at the level the evidence supports: name the game build, platform, region and date; identify which service components remain necessary; and distinguish offline, LAN, dedicated-server and private-server results. An official offline patch or title-specific FAQ carries more weight than speculation. If no reproducible technical project or publisher statement exists, the accurate answer is “no verified option found,” not a promise that a workaround will appear.
