The reliable way to check cross-play is to verify the exact game, platforms, storefronts, edition and mode in the publisher’s current support documentation. A store badge or community list can help you discover an answer, but it is not proof that your specific PlayStation–PC, Xbox–Switch or other pairing works. Then open the game’s multiplayer settings, enable its cross-play option, link any required publisher account and test an invitation with your friend.
What cross-play means
Cross-play, also called cross-platform multiplayer, allows people using different hardware platforms to join the same online match, session or matchmaking pool. The game—not the controller, cable or console accessory—must support the connection through its online services. A title may permit PlayStation players to match with PC users while excluding Nintendo Switch, or allow every listed platform in public matchmaking but not in a particular mode.

Support is therefore negotiated at several levels: the game’s servers, the platform pair, the storefront or account version, the edition installed, and sometimes the selected mode. “Available on PC” does not identify one single environment; Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store can be treated differently by a game. Likewise, “available on PlayStation” may cover PS4, PS5 or both, with separate compatibility rules.

| Feature | What it does | Why it must be checked separately |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-play | Lets players on supported, different platforms play together. | A game can support one platform pairing but not another, or limit support to selected modes. |
| Cross-progression or cross-save | Carries a profile, unlocks, progress or saves between platforms. | You may be able to play with a friend without carrying your progress to another device. |
| Cross-buy or “play anywhere” | Extends a purchase or entitlement to another storefront or device. | Sharing an entitlement does not establish that the game’s servers connect players across platforms. |
| Cross-generation play | Connects generations from one console family, such as PS4 with PS5 or Xbox One with Xbox Series. | This is a different compatibility question from connecting different platform families. |
Start with an exact platform inventory
Before searching, write down what each person will actually use. Vague labels create most false positives. Record the console generation, operating system or mobile platform, storefront and the edition installed.

| Record | Examples | Why it changes the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware platform | PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, iOS or Android | Publishers may enable only selected platform pairings or generations. |
| PC or mobile storefront | Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, iOS App Store or Google Play | Different storefront builds can use different account, entitlement or server arrangements. |
| Edition and branch | Standard edition, deluxe edition, beta, test branch, remaster or legacy version | A newer and older build can have different multiplayer services. |
| Mode | Public matchmaking, ranked, cooperative mission, private lobby or a limited-time event | Cross-play may be enabled in one mode and restricted in another. |
Write the pairing as a sentence, such as “one player on PS5 and one on Steam using the current PC edition.” This gives you a precise question to put into a support search instead of asking whether the title is simply “cross-platform.”
Use the publisher as the final authority
Search the game publisher’s support site, FAQ and current store description first. Use the game’s name together with one of these phrases:
cross-playcross-platform multiplayerPS5 and PC cross-play(replace with your exact pair)Xbox and PlayStation multiplayercrossplay settings
Read the entire support article rather than stopping at a headline. Look for a platform-by-platform list, exclusions, a “supported modes” section and the date or patch context. A statement that “PC and console players can play together” may still leave out a specific storefront or an older console generation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuestions the official page should answer
- Are both of your exact platforms named, rather than only a broad family such as “console” or “PC”?
- Does the statement apply to your edition and current version?
- Is support available in the mode you intend to play?
- Must each player sign in to a publisher account or link an existing platform account?
- Are friends found through an in-game identity, or through the console network’s friend list?
- Is cross-play enabled by default, or must a setting be changed?
If the publisher’s page contradicts a store badge, directory entry or old forum post, follow the publisher’s current documentation. Cross-play policies can change after patches, platform releases or service migrations.
Use directories for discovery, not proof
A maintained directory is useful when you do not know where to start. Steam’s Cross-Platform Play curator lets you discover listed titles and inspect groupings such as PlayStation and PC, Xbox and PC, Nintendo Switch or mobile. It can quickly reveal that a game has been considered for cross-play, but directory entries can lag behind patches and policy changes.
After finding a title in a directory, repeat the search on the publisher’s support site and verify the exact pairing. Treat a missing entry as “not yet confirmed,” not as proof that cross-play is impossible; treat a positive entry as a lead that still needs confirmation for the current edition and mode.

Check the game’s own cross-play setting
Even when the servers support your pairing, a local setting can prevent matchmaking. Open the game while signed in, enter its settings and look for labels such as Cross-Platform Play, Crossplay, Allow Cross-Network Play or Enable Multiplayer Across Platforms. The label and location vary by title.
Rocket League example
Rocket League’s official instructions provide a concrete path: select Settings from the Main Menu, select the Gameplay tab, and check the Cross-Platform Play box. The example illustrates the general process, but you should follow the current instructions for your own game if its menus differ.
After changing the option, return to matchmaking or the friends screen. Some games apply the change immediately; others require you to leave a lobby, restart matchmaking or restart the game. If the checkbox is missing, greyed out or automatically resets, record the exact wording and consult the publisher’s support page before assuming that your platform is unsupported.
Confirm accounts, friends and invitations
Cross-play is more than a server connection. The game must identify each player and provide a way to locate the other person. Many titles require a publisher account linked to the platform account, even when you normally launch through a console or PC storefront.
Check the game’s account screen for a sign-in or linking prompt. Use the same account identity that the publisher’s instructions specify; creating a second account can put purchases or progress on the wrong profile. Do not unlink an account casually, because the game’s support documentation may impose limits on relinking.
Find the correct friend workflow
Look for an in-game friends list, a search field for a player name or an invite option in the social menu. A console’s native friend list may not be enough when the other person is on a different platform. Epic Online Services describes authentication, friend management, invites and joinability as parts of a cross-play system, which explains why a technically supported pairing can still fail until both accounts are recognized by the game’s own social service.

Ask your friend for the exact in-game name, including any separator or number the game displays. Send a friend request through the game, wait for it to be accepted, then invite the person to a private lobby. If the request cannot find the account, verify that both players are using the same regional service, edition and current game version before changing unrelated network settings.
Run a private test instead of relying on a label
A private invitation tests the complete path: account authentication, friend discovery, lobby creation and the actual platform pairing. Use this sequence after the documentation and settings checks:
- Launch the same current edition on both devices and sign in to the required publisher accounts.
- Confirm that cross-play is enabled in each player’s settings.
- Add the other player through the game’s cross-platform friends or social menu.
- Create a private lobby or party and send the invite from inside the game.
- Have the invited player accept through the game’s notification or social screen, not only the console dashboard.
- Start a mode that the support page explicitly lists as cross-play compatible.
- Record what happened, including any error text, the mode selected and which player could or could not see the invite.
If the private test succeeds, you have confirmed the practical workflow for that pair and mode. It does not prove that every mode, generation or storefront is supported; test those separately when they matter.

Compare a game’s support precisely
When you are choosing between games or planning a group session, make a small comparison record instead of relying on a single “cross-play” claim.
| Comparison point | What to write down | Decision it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Platform pair | For example, PS5–Steam or Xbox Series–Nintendo Switch | Shows whether your actual players can meet. |
| Edition and version | Current release, remaster, beta, test branch or legacy build | Prevents incompatible builds from being treated as one title. |
| Modes | Public, ranked, cooperative, private or event-specific | Identifies restrictions that a general store description may omit. |
| Account requirement | Publisher account, linked platform account or neither | Reveals setup work before everyone buys or installs. |
| Friend and invite method | In-game name, platform ID, party code or direct invite | Determines how the group will actually meet. |
| Input or matchmaking rule | Any documented input-pool or matchmaking limitation | Explains why a supported connection may place players in different pools. |
| Voice and text chat | Whether communication works across the platforms | Separates playable cross-play from a complete group experience. |
| Cross-progression | Whether progress and unlocks follow the account | Keeps save-transfer expectations separate from multiplayer access. |
| Date checked | The day you verified the publisher page and settings | Provides a reference if a later patch changes support. |
Use “not stated” when an official page does not answer one of these points. An unknown is safer than inferring support from another platform pair or from a community comment.
What to do when a supported pairing does not work
The platforms are listed, but the mode is unavailable
Return to the support page and check the exact mode. Some games allow cross-play in public matchmaking but restrict a ranked playlist, a special event, a test branch or a legacy version. Switch to a mode explicitly listed as supported before changing account or network settings.

One player cannot see the cross-play option
Check that both installations are the current edition and that the player is not running a beta, test branch or older release. Compare the menu path and wording with the publisher’s instructions. A missing option can indicate a platform-specific restriction or a mode that does not expose the setting.
Matchmaking works, but the friend invite fails
Verify account linking and use the game’s own friend search. A platform-native friendship may not create a cross-platform game friendship. Confirm the spelling of the in-game identity, accept the request on the correct account and try a private lobby. Epic Online Services identifies friend management, invites and joinability as separate functions, so one working does not guarantee the others.
A directory says yes, but the publisher page says something else
Use the publisher’s current statement. Directories are discovery tools and can lag after patches or policy changes. Save the date of your check and, if needed, contact the game’s support team with the exact platform pair, edition and mode.
Cross-play was turned off and matchmaking became limited
Re-enable the setting and test again. Epic’s Fortnite support warns that when cross-play is disabled, some game modes may work only in Solo mode. That behavior is a game-specific example, not a universal rule, but it demonstrates why disabling cross-play can alter the available playlists rather than merely removing players from other platforms.
Players are on different console generations
Separate the question “Can PS4 play with PS5?” from “Can PlayStation play with PC?” A title may support cross-generation play within one console family while offering no connection to another platform, or it may require a particular edition on each generation. Verify both pairings independently.

Official examples that show why details matter
Fortnite’s platform statement
Epic Player Support states: “Players on Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam can randomly matchmake with or against each other in all Online Match types.” The wording identifies named platforms and a specific activity—random matchmaking in Online Match types. It should not be expanded automatically to every private, competitive or account feature without checking the game’s other instructions.
Fortnite’s disabled-setting warning
The same support guidance warns: “If crossplay is disabled, some game modes may only work in Solo mode.” This is a useful diagnostic clue: a change in available modes after toggling cross-play can be an intentional restriction, not a server failure.
Epic Online Services’ social layer
Epic Online Services describes its overlay as helping “authenticate players, streamline friend management, and provide game invite and joinability functionality” across supported platforms. That explains the practical checklist: server compatibility, account authentication and social discovery all have to work for a cross-platform party to form.

Keep a dated answer for your group
Cross-play support is not a permanent property of a title. Patches, platform launches, service changes and the retirement of an older edition can alter the answer. Save a short note containing the publisher page you checked, the date, the exact platform pair, edition, mode and account requirement. If a friend asks months later, repeat the verification rather than forwarding an undated list.
A complete answer should look like this: “As checked on [date], the current edition supports PS5–Steam cross-play in public matchmaking; both players must enable cross-platform play, link the required publisher account and add each other through the in-game friends list. Cross-progression is a separate feature and is not assumed.” Put any variable date or player name in your own notes; the important part is preserving the qualifications alongside the claim.
A quick decision checklist
- Have you named every player’s exact hardware and storefront?
- Did you search the publisher’s current support page using the exact platform pairing?
- Did you verify the edition, version and intended mode?
- Did you treat a directory or store badge as a lead rather than final proof?
- Did every player enable the game’s cross-play setting?
- Are the required publisher accounts linked to the correct profiles?
- Did you add friends and send the invite through the game’s own social system?
- Did a private test confirm the real lobby and matchmaking workflow?
- Did you check cross-progression separately instead of assuming it follows cross-play?
- Did you record the date and any mode or generation restrictions?
When all of these checks agree, you can answer “yes” for the specific pairing you tested. If one item remains unknown, describe the result as unconfirmed rather than promising that every platform, edition and mode will connect.
