The most reliable route is to start with recurring official calendars, then verify each local listing with its organizer. Use Steam Next Fest for online playable demos, the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) global events listing and your nearest IGDA chapter for in-person opportunities, and city-specific searches for showcases, festivals, arcades and game jams. Before you travel, confirm the date, venue, access rules, accessibility information and any last-minute changes on the organizer’s own page.
Start with the right kind of event
“Indie game event” can describe several very different experiences. A showcase usually emphasizes hands-on play of a selected group of games. A festival may combine games with talks, competitions, exhibitions or a broader cultural program. A pop-up or arcade night is often a temporary installation where the main activity is playing, while a meetup or game jam may focus on developers and collaboration rather than a public games floor.

Decide what you want before searching. If you want to play unreleased games from home, look for an online demo festival. If you want to meet developers, watch talks or see many projects in one trip, a festival or convention is a better fit. If you want a short, local outing, search for an arcade pop-up, library program or independent game-store event. This distinction prevents a promising listing from becoming a disappointing visit because it was aimed at a different audience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Hands-on play: showcases, arcade pop-ups and demo nights put playable games first.
- Broad discovery: festivals and conventions can offer many genres, talks, exhibits and networking.
- Developer participation: IGDA meetups, game jams and chapter events may be more useful for creators than for a casual player.
- Online access: a digital festival removes travel and lets you try demos on your own schedule during the event window.
Use Steam Next Fest for recurring online demos
Steam describes Next Fest as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.” It takes place three times each year—in February, June and October—and is designed to connect players with upcoming games, developers and feedback. The event is therefore the most repeatable answer to “where can I play upcoming indie games?” when you do not need a physical venue.

What to expect
During the event window, participating developers make demos available on their game pages. You can browse by genre or other categories, install a demo, watch developer streams and add promising games to your wishlist. Availability varies by title: some demos remain playable after the festival, while others are removed or changed, so treat the event dates as the dependable period for discovering the largest selection.
The October 2026 edition
The dated Steam schedule lists the October 2026 edition for October 19–26, 2026. Steam’s page also records press-preview, demo-submission and opt-out deadlines. Those deadlines matter mainly to developers, but they explain why a game may appear in a festival announcement and later disappear from the final lineup. Because Valve can revise schedules and participation details, recheck the current Steamworks documentation before planning around a specific date.
A practical Next Fest routine
- Open the current Steam Next Fest event page when the festival begins.
- Filter the catalog by genres, tags or categories that match your interests instead of opening every listing.
- Install a small batch of demos so downloads do not consume the whole event window.
- Play enough of each demo to assess controls, performance, accessibility options and whether the game’s premise suits you.
- Use the wishlist or a personal note to record games you want to follow; a demo alone is not a release guarantee.
- Check the developer’s own page for a release window, community links or a longer demo if you need more information.
Next Fest is online, so it does not answer questions about local venues, age limits or physical accessibility. For those, move to chapter and city searches.
Find local events through IGDA calendars
The IGDA global events listing aggregates chapter and community activities, including expos, conferences, meetups and indie-focused sessions. Use it as an index: identify the organizer and then open that organizer’s own event page for the authoritative details.
Search the global listing
- Search the IGDA events listing for your country, region or nearest major city.
- Open entries that mention a showcase, festival, meetup, arcade, game jam or indie session.
- Record the event name and organizer rather than relying on the aggregator’s summary.
- Follow the organizer’s page to confirm the date, venue, registration process and audience.
A global calendar is useful for discovery, but an aggregator can lag behind a changed venue or a canceled session. Treat the organizer’s page as the final authority.

Check your nearest chapter
Local IGDA chapters often know about physical events before they appear in broad convention searches. IGDA Chicago, for example, lists Chicago Indie Game Showcase 2026 and labels entries with categories such as festival, meetup and pop-up. IGDA DC links to local opportunities including Play at the Library, Cherry Blossom Arcade and District Arcade. These examples show why a chapter page can reveal small, playable events that a national events search misses.
Search for “IGDA” plus your city, then inspect the chapter’s calendar, newsletter or social announcements. If your city has no active chapter, check the nearest metropolitan chapter and nearby universities, museums, libraries and game-development communities for partner events.

Nonprofit calendars surface a different set of opportunities. The IGDA Foundation calendar includes game jams and the Download for Charity Steam event. Its 2026 listing describes more than 100 titles on Steam. A charity or foundation event may be online, hybrid or tied to a local fundraiser, so read the individual listing for its format rather than assuming it is a convention.
Search your city and venue types
Once you have an organizer or chapter name, combine your city with the exact event type. Useful searches include:
- “indie game events near me”
- “indie game showcase this weekend”
- “game festivals in [city]”
- “arcade pop-up with indie games”
- “IGDA events near me”
- “Steam Next Fest dates”
Repeat the search with likely host venues. Independent game stores, arcades, public libraries, universities, museums and convention venues may publish their own calendars even when an event is absent from a general listing. A university game-development program might host a student showcase; a library may run a playable exhibit; an arcade can announce a one-night pop-up through its own channels.

Use discovery platforms as leads, not proof
Meetup, Eventbrite and social posts can expose events you would not otherwise find, but their information can be incomplete or stale. Use them to discover an organizer, then verify against the organizer’s page or the host venue’s calendar. If the only available listing has no named organizer, exact address or current date, treat it as a lead and keep searching.

Verify an event before you travel
Event listings change, especially for temporary pop-ups. Make a final check close to the event date and again on the day if the organizer commonly posts updates. Confirm each of the following on an organizer or venue page:
- Date and time: check the day, opening hours, time zone and whether the listing describes a single session or a multi-day run.
- Venue: verify the complete address, entrance, room or floor and whether the location has moved.
- Access: determine whether the event is public, RSVP-only, ticketed, press-only, industry-only or limited to registered participants.
- Cost: look for admission fees, suggested donations, deposits, service charges and whether free entry still requires registration.
- Accessibility: find information about step-free entry, elevators, seating, restrooms, captioning, lighting, sound and any contact for accommodation requests.
- Age rules: check minimum age, guardian requirements and any identification policy.
- Format: establish whether you will find playable stations, talks, networking, a tournament, a game jam or a commercial expo floor.
- Equipment: some events provide controllers and PCs; others ask visitors to bring a laptop, headphones or a reservation confirmation.
- Updates: read the latest organizer announcement for cancellations, sold-out capacity, weather changes or revised check-in instructions.
Save a screenshot or offline note of the address, start time and check-in instructions. Temporary events may have poor mobile reception, and a social post can be edited after you leave home.
Compare events with one consistent checklist
When several listings compete for the same weekend, compare them on the same axes rather than choosing the one with the most exciting title. The table below reflects the decisions that most affect the experience.
| Decision | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Online, in-person or hybrid? | Determines travel, equipment and how you will play. |
| Distance | How far is the venue and how long is the trip? | A short pop-up may be worthwhile locally; a multi-day festival may justify a longer journey. |
| Access | Public, RSVP, ticketed or industry-only? | Prevents arriving without an entry method. |
| Activity | Arcade/free-play, demos, talks, networking or a game jam? | Matches the event to your goal. |
| Content | Which genres, themes or creators are represented? | Helps you avoid a broad event that does not fit your interests. |
| Accessibility and age | What accommodations and age rules are published? | Determines whether everyone in your group can participate. |
| Cost | What are admission, reservation and travel costs? | A free event can still require a timed RSVP or transportation budget. |
| Timing | How does the date relate to a release, vacation or other commitment? | Some events are valuable precisely because a game is still unreleased; others are better after launch. |
A pop-up normally favors concentrated hands-on play. A festival or convention usually offers greater breadth, talks and press or developer exposure. Neither is automatically better; select the format that serves your reason for going.

Plan for a showcase, festival or pop-up
Before leaving
- Register or reserve a time slot if the organizer requires it.
- Check the venue’s transport, parking and entry instructions.
- Bring identification, confirmation details and any required accessibility documentation.
- Charge your phone and, if requested, your laptop or handheld device.
- Set a realistic list of priority games or talks; a crowded event rarely allows every activity.
At the venue
Start by locating the check-in desk and asking whether stations have time limits. For a playable demo, note the control scheme, save behavior, performance, text size, subtitle options and whether staff can reset a station. Ask permission before recording or photographing a game. Developers often value specific feedback about where you became confused or stopped playing more than a general statement that a game was “good.”
At a festival, divide your time between the floor and scheduled talks. At a pop-up, expect a smaller number of games and more direct conversation with the hosts. If the room is crowded, take the organizer’s recommended queue or reservation system instead of blocking a station while deciding what to play.
Afterward
Write down the names of games and developers while the details are fresh. Follow only the channels you actually want; a wishlist, mailing list or developer page is more useful than a pile of unsorted screenshots. If an event was canceled or materially changed, tell the organizer what information was hard to find so future notices can be clearer.
Troubleshoot common search failures
“Nothing appears for my town”
Broaden the radius to the nearest major city, then search venue types individually. Add terms such as “library,” “university,” “museum,” “arcade,” “game jam” and “showcase.” Small events may be announced only by the host venue or an IGDA chapter.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“The listing has a date but no ticket information”
Open the organizer’s page and look for an RSVP form, registration link or capacity notice. If none exists, contact the organizer through the listed official channel before traveling. Do not infer free entry from the absence of a price.
Best Value
“Two pages show different dates”
Prefer the newest notice from the organizer or venue, and check whether one date is a press preview, setup day, submission deadline or a separate session. Steam Next Fest in particular has multiple deadlines around a festival; the event dates and developer deadlines are not interchangeable.
“The event is listed as public, but I need accommodations”
Public access does not guarantee every accommodation. Look for a dedicated accessibility statement or contact the organizer before buying a ticket. Ask specific questions about entrances, seating, noise, lighting, captioning and restroom access so you can plan with an actual answer.
“A social post says an event is happening this weekend”
Find the organizer or host venue named in the post and confirm the date there. If no official confirmation exists, treat the event as unverified. This is especially important for one-night pop-ups, whose details can change quickly.

A repeatable monthly discovery routine
- Check the current Steam Next Fest schedule for the February, June or October edition nearest your planning window.
- Review the IGDA global events listing for your region.
- Open your nearest IGDA chapter calendar and note festival, meetup and pop-up categories.
- Check IGDA Foundation and other nonprofit calendars for game jams and charity showcases.
- Search your city and nearby cities with “indie game showcase,” “indie festival,” “arcade,” “game jam” and “pop-up.”
- Inspect independent game-store, arcade, library, university, museum and convention calendars.
- Put candidate events in a short list with date, venue, access, cost, accessibility and travel time.
- Verify every candidate on the organizer’s page immediately before committing.
No single nationwide calendar captures every local pop-up. Combining recurring online festivals, IGDA sources, nonprofit listings and venue searches is what makes the process dependable. The final confirmation always belongs to the organizer that controls the event.
