SAMHSA’s guidance is direct: “Sometimes help can’t wait. If you or someone you know is in danger or having a medical emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.” The 911/emergency-room route and 988 crisis support serve different needs; use the emergency route when immediate danger or a medical emergency is present.

What to do if someone is aggressive
Prioritize safety
- If anyone faces immediate physical danger, contact emergency services rather than trying to manage the situation alone.
- If you can do so safely, create distance and move to a safer place. Avoid arguing, confronting, or physically restraining someone when doing so could increase danger.
- If there is no immediate danger but the situation is a behavioral-health or substance-use crisis, call or text 988. You can contact 988 because you are worried about someone else; counselors can offer support and connect you with additional resources as needed.
When the immediate crisis has passed
Arrange an assessment with a qualified health or behavioral-health professional. Share what you have observed, including cannabis use, changes in mood or behavior, possible withdrawal, other substances, and any safety concerns. A checklist or one symptom cannot establish a diagnosis or prove what caused an individual’s aggression.

Can cannabis use or withdrawal cause anger?
Anger and irritability can be relevant signs to discuss with a professional. SAMHSA includes increased anger or irritability and aggressive behavior among possible signs that someone may need help; NIDA’s marijuana withdrawal checklist includes anger and irritability. These signs warrant assessment, not an assumption that cannabis is the sole cause of a particular person’s behavior.
#1 Best Overall
An archived NIDA report describes a study of 17 heavy, long-term marijuana users. In that small sample, aggressive responding was significantly higher on withdrawal days 3 and 7 than on the smoking baseline, and had returned to pre-withdrawal levels by day 28. That study-specific result is not a general withdrawal timetable, a prediction about any individual, or evidence that cannabis explains aggression in a given case.
How to find ongoing treatment

FindTreatment.gov is SAMHSA’s confidential and anonymous locator for mental and substance-use treatment in the United States and its territories. You can also call the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 for free, confidential treatment referral and information, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. SAMHSA lists TTY at 1-800-487-4889 and texting a ZIP code to 435748 as additional contact options; check its helpline page for current details.

Ask what care includes
NIDA identifies cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), contingency management, and motivational enhancement therapy as behavioral approaches that have shown promise for marijuana use disorder. A clinician can help determine whether one or more approaches fit the person’s needs and assess possible co-occurring conditions or other substance use.

Approval status can change, so consult a qualified clinician and current official guidance rather than relying on supplements or self-help products as established treatment. The Marijuana Withdrawal Symptom Checklist is an assessment instrument, not a stand-alone diagnosis or treatment plan.

SAMHSA’s 2025 crisis-care guidance describes a continuum built around “Someone to Contact,” “Someone to Respond,” and “A Safe Place for Help.” It includes 988 contact services, mobile crisis teams, and stabilization services. Local options vary, so do not assume that a mobile crisis team or a particular stabilization service is available where you live; ask 988 or local providers about services in your area.
This guide covers US-based national resources. If you are outside the United States, use your local emergency number and locally available crisis and treatment services.
