These are different actions: turning beta updates off does not remove the installed beta, while returning to a public release requires erasing and restoring the iPhone.
Start with the least disruptive fix
A beta can contain errors or behave differently from a commercially released version, but timing alone does not prove that the beta caused a battery, app, network, or performance problem. Apple describes beta software as potentially containing errors; it does not diagnose every symptom or build. Check release notes for your specific build before assuming a known issue or applying a workaround.
- The iPhone is usable and the problem is repeatable: document it and report it through Feedback Assistant.
- You want to stop receiving beta builds: turn Beta Updates off. This prevents future beta updates but leaves the current beta installed.
- You need public iOS immediately: use Apple’s erase-and-restore process, after considering data loss and backup compatibility.
- The phone says the beta has expired: install the offered update through Software Update.
Report a reproducible beta problem
When the phone is usable, capture the details before changing software. On beta iOS, use the Feedback Assistant app to submit a report. Apple says, “If you encounter an issue during the beta release cycle, submit feedback right away to increase the likelihood that the issue will be addressed by the public release.” Apple reviews reports, but does not provide intermediate status updates while investigating, so do not count on a reply or a fix by a specific date. Include useful details
- The exact iOS version and build shown in Settings.
- What happened and what you expected to happen.
- The date and time of the incident, plus steps that reliably reproduce it.
- Relevant screenshots or screen recordings, if they help explain the problem and do not expose sensitive information.
Stop future beta updates without removing the installed beta
For iOS 16.4 or later, open Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and select Off. The iPhone will stop offering future beta updates through that setting, but it will continue running the beta already installed until a later public release or a restore changes the software.

On iOS 16.3.1 or earlier, Apple’s instructions use removal of the beta profile instead. If a computer was used to install the beta, Apple says a restore is required to remove it. Follow Apple’s current instructions for your situation: How to uninstall iOS beta software.
Return to public iOS now: erase and restore the iPhone
Apple’s supported route from an installed beta to the current publicly released iOS version is to erase the device and restore it with a computer using recovery mode. This is not a nondestructive downgrade: data on the iPhone is erased. Before starting, identify a backup made before the beta, if available, and make sure you understand what data may be lost.

Check backup compatibility first
Apple warns that a backup made while using beta software may not be compatible with an earlier iOS version. An archived backup made before installing the beta is the safer option for restoring onto public iOS. Do not assume the newest backup will work after the downgrade; Apple’s guidance is here: Apple’s beta removal and restore instructions.
Use Apple’s model-specific recovery procedure
- On a current Mac, use Finder; on Windows, use the Apple Devices app. Make sure the computer and app are current.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer and put it into recovery mode using the steps for the exact iPhone model. Button sequences differ by model, so follow Apple’s live instructions rather than a generic sequence.
- When prompted, choose the restore option. The process erases the iPhone and installs the current publicly released iOS version.
- After the restore, set up the iPhone and restore only a backup compatible with the installed iOS version. If you lack a compatible backup, you may need to set it up as a new device and recover data from other available sources.

If the beta has expired, install the offered update
If the iPhone indicates that a software update is available in the context of an expired beta, Apple says the beta has expired. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the offered update. This is an update path, distinct from erasing the phone to leave an installed beta immediately. Use Apple’s recovery-mode restore instructions for the exact iPhone model and computer platform. They cover a computer-assisted restore when an ordinary update or restore cannot be completed.
