To find a note in Google Keep, search for a distinctive word or label, then narrow the matches with the available filters. For easier retrieval later, use a consistent set of labels, pin only notes you need near the top, and archive notes that are no longer active.
Search for a distinctive word or phrase
In Google Keep, enter an uncommon word from a note’s title or body in the search bar. If you remember the label but not the note’s wording, search for the label name. Google Keep Help describes the search bar as a way to find notes and lists: Search for notes & lists.

Keep can also search text in photos, such as a receipt image. Google says photo-text search is available in English only.

After searching, use the filter icons shown in Keep to refine the results. Google documents filters for note types, labels, “Things” categories, people a note is shared with, and colors. Note types can include reminders, recordings, and URLs; categories can include books, music, and travel. The available filter names and categories may vary with the interface.

- Type: Find a particular kind of note, such as a recording or URL.
- Label: Limit results to a subject or project you have labeled.
- Category: Narrow by a “Things” category, such as travel.
- Person: Find notes shared with a particular person.
- Color: Use a note’s color to narrow matches.
Search inside an open note on Android
If you have opened a likely match but need to locate a specific word in it, Google’s Android instructions document this path:
- Open the note.
- Tap More.
- Select Find in note.
- Enter the term, then use the arrows to move between matches.
This is the documented Android workflow; Google’s cited instructions do not establish the same steps on every platform.

Set up labels, colors, and pins for future searches
Use labels for recurring subjects
Apply a small, consistent set of labels to notes you may need to retrieve by project or subject. Google Keep Help says desktop users can have up to 50 labels. Labels group related notes, so a label search can narrow a large collection without relying on an exact phrase.
Use colors and pins as secondary cues
Colors provide a visual distinction, and pins move important notes to the top of the Keep feed. Treat color as a cue that helps you recognize a note, not a substitute for descriptive text or a label. Pin only the notes you want prioritized in the feed. On shared notes, each user’s labels, colors, and pins are personal and visible only to that user. See Google Keep Help’s organization guidance.
Look in Archive or Trash if a note is missing
Check Archive for notes removed from the main view
Archiving removes a note from the Notes tab but keeps it in Archive. Check there if you may have archived the note rather than deleted it.
Check Trash promptly for deleted notes
Google says deleted notes can be recovered from Trash for seven days. If a note may have been deleted, look there within that recovery window. Google’s instructions for archiving notes explain the distinction.

Use keyboard navigation on desktop
For keyboard access, Google’s Keep screen-reader help documents pressing / to focus search. Enter a term, press Enter, and use Tab to move into the results. The same help page documents label tabs and keyboard operations for pinning and archiving: Use Google Keep with a screen reader.
A quick retrieval routine
- Search for a distinctive word from the note, or for a label name.
- Use the visible filters to narrow by type, label, category, shared person, or color.
- On Android, use More → Find in note to locate a term inside an open note.
- If it is not in the Notes tab, check Archive; if it may have been deleted, check Trash within seven days.
- For future searches, apply stable labels and use pins and colors as supporting cues.
These are documented Keep features, not a measured speed guarantee. Google’s help documentation does not quantify how much faster they make retrieval.
