What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your Pixel Buds lose charge overnight, first check that both earbuds are actually seated and charging in a case that has power. Being inside the case does not guarantee they are replenishing. Google does not publish a normal overnight battery-loss figure or identify one universal cause, so use the checks below to narrow down what is happening.
Check what is losing charge
Before changing anything, note the battery levels for the left bud, right bud and case. On Android, the Pixel Buds app or settings and a battery widget can show these levels; some older models need to be connected before their battery information appears. This helps distinguish a low case from an earbud that was not replenished.

Then check whether the buds were outside the case, inside it without a charging indication, or inside it with an indication that they were charging. These observations help focus troubleshooting, but do not by themselves identify a specific fault.
Google’s published listening-time figures are approximate playback results, not overnight standby benchmarks. The company says actual battery life varies with the device, enabled features, use, environment and other factors. They cannot establish how much charge Pixel Buds should retain while idle in a case. Google’s charging and battery guidance explains the distinction.

Reseat the earbuds and check the charging indication
- Match each bud to its left or right slot, insert it and rotate it until the magnet holds it securely.
- Check the case’s status light after inserting each earbud. Google says the light should quickly blink for each one, though light behavior varies by generation.
- If no indication appears, adjust the bud, then close and reopen the lid to try to realign the connection.
For Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a, Google’s charging instructions describe a breathing white light for earbuds that are charging. Do not assume that this description applies to another generation; check the instructions for your model in Google’s charging guide.
Clean the contacts and check the case
With the buds removed, wipe the magnetic charging contacts on each earbud and inside the case with a dry, soft cloth. Make sure the eartips are attached securely, then reseat the buds and look for the charging indication again. Google lists poor connections and dirty charging points among possible charging problems; that does not establish them as the cause of every overnight battery loss. Confirm the case itself has charge. It can recharge the earbuds while disconnected from power, but a depleted case cannot keep replenishing them. If you are charging the case, inspect its cable and connection. For a model with Qi wireless charging, reposition the case on the charging surface if needed. Google’s cited guidance lists Qi support for the Pixel Buds (2020), Pixel Buds Pro and Pixel Buds Pro 2 cases; check your model’s instructions rather than assuming wireless charging is supported.
Charge, retest, then pair or reset if needed
- Charge the case with both earbuds inside for at least 30 minutes.
- Check the charging indications and battery levels again.
- If the buds still do not charge, pair them again. If the problem remains, follow the reset instructions for your exact Pixel Buds model in Google’s charging troubleshooting guide.
For Pixel Buds Pro 2, Google says a slowly blinking orange earbud indicator means the earbuds still have charge while the case is below 20%. Its closed-case light also indicates the case’s charge state; under Google’s described check, no light means the case does not have enough battery to charge the earbuds. These interpretations are specific to that model—use Google’s status-light guide for the generation you own.

When the case also loses charge quickly
If the case’s battery is falling unusually fast as well as the earbuds’, treat that as a separate case-battery concern. Google’s support pages list a case-battery replacement route for Pixel Buds 2a, but this model-specific listing does not establish that other Pixel Buds cases have replaceable batteries or that replacement is the right answer for overnight earbud drain. Check the current options through Google Pixel Buds Help.
