You can borrow free audiobooks through your public library by using its digital lending service—often Libby—signing in with a valid library card, and searching the catalog for audiobook titles. If a copy is checked out, you can usually place a hold. The app and digital loans are free; the available titles, loan periods, and borrowing limits depend on your library.
Start with Libby and find your library
Libby is OverDrive’s free app and browser-based service for borrowing digital titles from participating libraries. Visit Libby’s getting-started guide or open Libby on your phone or tablet. You can also use Libby in a web browser.

- Search by your library’s name, city, or ZIP code, then select the correct library.
- Sign in with a valid card for that library, or follow the available signup option if it offers digital card registration.
Libby is free to use, and borrowing its digital content with a valid library card has no subscription cost or late fees, according to Libby Help. Digital loans return automatically when they are due.

Card eligibility and signup rules are set locally. Check the library’s website for its application process or ask a branch. Some libraries let you get a digital card through Libby; others require you to apply through the library itself. See Libby’s information about library cards and getting a card.
#1 Best Overall
If you use more than one library, add each library separately and use a valid card for each. A card for one library does not automatically grant access to another library’s catalog.
Search for audiobooks available now
- Search the library catalog by title, author, or series.
- Open the filters and select the audiobook format. Libby’s format guide explains how to narrow results.
- To focus on books you can borrow immediately, set availability to “available now.”
- Open a result and look for the Borrow button. If it is offered, that copy is available to check out.
A title appearing in search results does not mean it is available right away. Libraries choose their own digital collections, and a book may be absent, temporarily checked out, or available in a format other than audio. See Libby’s guide to availability.
Borrow a title or place a hold
When a title has a Borrow button, select it and confirm the loan. If the audiobook is checked out, choose the hold option if one is shown. You can then check the Holds area in Libby for updates and an estimated wait when provided.
Your library sets borrowing limits and loan lengths, so those details can differ from one library to another. Libby’s overview of the service explains that libraries determine their own titles and policies.

Listen in the app or browser
After borrowing, open the title from your Shelf. In the mobile app, audiobooks download by default over Wi-Fi, allowing you to listen offline once the download is complete. The browser version requires an internet connection. Check Libby’s offline-listening instructions if you need help with downloads.

Your library may not have an OverDrive collection. Ask its staff which digital lending services it offers; the library can confirm whether it uses Libby or another service. Libby also explains what to do when a library is missing from the app.
Ask whether the library participates in Hoopla, another service that may offer audiobooks. Participation and borrowing terms are local; a 2025 Hoopla sign-up flyer says trial terms and borrow counts are determined by the library. Confirm current availability and rules with your own library.
