In Tower of Fantasy, weapons are grouped into three broad combat roles: DPS, Defense, and Support. Those labels describe a weapon’s general job, while its element, attack pattern, skills, shatter, and charge determine how it plays. Use role as a starting point for building a loadout—not as a ranking of which weapon is best.
What the three weapon roles mean
The role system describes a weapon’s broad contribution in combat. A community-maintained Tower of Fantasy weapon reference characterizes the roles as damage, defensive utility, and healing or ally enhancement. Those are general descriptions, not guarantees about every weapon’s performance.

DPS: focus on damage
DPS weapons are oriented toward dealing damage. Equipping two or more DPS weapons is described as activating Attack resonance, a loadout bonus associated with that role. The DPS label does not establish that every weapon in the category is equally powerful, easy to use, or effective in every mode or elemental setup.
Defense: draw aggro and mitigate damage
Defense weapons are described as helping draw enemy attention and mitigate incoming damage. Two or more Defense weapons are associated with Fortitude resonance. Their defensive role does not mean they are primarily damage-focused, and the precise effects of defensive bonuses may depend on the current game version.

Support: heal and enhance allies
Support weapons are described as providing healing and enhancing allies. Two or more Support weapons are associated with Benediction resonance. The role label alone does not tell you how much healing a weapon provides, how often it can be used, or how strong its buffs are; those details come from the individual weapon’s effects and conditions.
How weapon roles affect a loadout
The cited role reference describes resonance as a bonus based on the roles of equipped weapons. Two or more weapons sharing a role are associated with Attack, Fortitude, or Benediction resonance, depending on that role; a loadout with one weapon of each role is described as Balanced. The Tower of Fantasy Index also describes equipping up to three weapons (Tower of Fantasy Index).

Shatter and charge are different from role
Role, shatter, and charge answer different questions about a weapon. The role indicates its broad combat job; shatter and charge describe separate combat attributes.

Neither stat tells you whether a weapon is DPS, Defense, or Support. Consider both alongside the role when deciding what a weapon adds to your team or rotation.
Element and individual skills shape how a weapon feels
Element is another dimension of a weapon, separate from its role. Two weapons can share a role but have different elemental attributes, and the role label does not explain elemental interactions. The current range of possible elemental combinations is not established here, so consult the game’s current weapon and team descriptions for specific interactions.

Weapons also differ in attack patterns and weapon-specific abilities. The publisher’s combat overview describes general attacks, dodge skills, weapon-specific skills, and combination skills (Tower of Fantasy official website). These differences are why a role is only a broad guide: the weapon’s actual kit determines how you attack, defend, heal, or support in play.

How to choose a weapon type
- Start with the contribution you want to make. Choose DPS for a damage-oriented direction, Defense for defensive and aggro utility, or Support for healing and ally enhancement.
- Check the resonance for your intended lineup. The cited reference associates two or more weapons of one role with that role’s resonance, and one of each role with Balanced. Verify the active effect in your current game client.
- Compare the weapon’s actual kit. Look at attack patterns and skills, then consider shatter and charge rather than relying on the role label alone.
- Account for element and the content you play. Role does not determine element, and the available information does not support a universal best element, role, or weapon.
Is any weapon type the best overall?
No universal winner follows from the role system. DPS, Defense, and Support describe different contributions, while individual weapon skills, elemental attributes, and loadout synergy affect whether a choice suits your needs. Without current, mode-specific balance evidence, a general ranking would be misleading.
