Then follow event signs and traffic staff as you approach: temporary directions can differ from the route shown in a navigation app.
Where should you park for the festival?
Start with the festival’s official “Getting Here,” “Parking & Directions,” or travel page for the exact date you plan to attend. Check for the authorized lots and entrances, whether parking must be reserved or purchased separately, lot opening times, maps, accessibility arrangements, and any overflow plan. Festival parking is event-specific; do not assume that a lot used in a previous year is open or reached the same way this time.

For example, the Tomorrowland Belgium travel page warns of traffic jams and road closures and directs drivers to follow highway signs and then “Parking Festival” signs near the venue. Its page lists a 2026 parking-voucher sale beginning June 16, 2026, at 15:00 CEST; that date is past, so check the page for the edition you are attending rather than relying on an old sale date.
Official arrangements vary widely. Riot Fest’s Chicago travel page describes an off-site Union Pacific lot, advance parking purchases, limited day-of sales that may be available, and a walk to the festival. Verify the lot’s location, availability, price, and access for your event date.

Should you follow GPS or festival signs?
Use a navigation app to plan the general journey, but be ready to stop relying on it when the event’s instructions say to do so. Temporary closures, controlled approaches, and real-time traffic direction may not appear in an app. Near the venue, follow official signs, digital displays, parking staff, stewards, and police directions where present.
- Wacken Open Air’s 2026 arrival guidance tells drivers to switch off navigation by the motorway exit and follow roadside signs, digital displays, traffic control, and stewards.
- Rock im Park’s travel page says its event routing is intended to direct drivers to available parking and warns that other navigation apps may show impassable routes. Confirm that page’s dates and instructions for the edition you plan to attend.
- Tomorrowland Belgium’s guidance strongly recommends following signs rather than GPS in the closed-road area.
These are examples of event-specific instructions, not a universal rule to turn off GPS. Check your own festival’s directions and follow the instructions on the ground.
How can you avoid preventable delays?
Allow extra time for the drive, parking approach, and walk or transfer to the entrance. Arrival and departure periods can be busy, and no published option establishes a universal best arrival time or guarantees a delay-free trip. A premium or closer lot may still use congested approach roads.

Follow the event’s current traffic plan and local directions, and use only authorized parking. Do not improvise by parking on nearby streets where restrictions apply. An Garda Síochána’s Electric Picnic advisory dated August 27, 2026 asked motorists to follow the official traffic plan, signage, and Garda directions; consult the current advisory for a later edition.
Coachella’s 2026 Getting Here page advises arriving early and following parking personnel, who may change traffic direction in real time. It says maps are posted closer to festival dates, so check the page again before you travel.
When is park-and-ride or a shuttle worth considering?
Check alternatives before setting out: official remote parking with a shuttle, park-and-ride, public transport, organized buses, or a designated drop-off area. Compare the complete trip, not just how close the parking lot is. Remote parking may spare you a search near the venue but adds a transfer; a nearer lot may reduce walking yet still share congested roads.

Before choosing an alternative, confirm its total cost, booking or ticket requirements, route and entrance, walking distance, accessibility, operating hours, and return arrangements. For shuttles, check when service begins and ends and whether queues or capacity limits could affect the journey back.
Examples show why the details matter. For Belfast Fleadh in August 2026, Belfast City Council described three park-and-ride sites on major approach routes, with shuttles to city transport hubs near the event zone and advance booking through RingGo. The council forecast more than 800,000 visitors across city events during the eight-day festival; that was a forecast for that Belfast edition, not a general attendance figure. See the council’s announcement dated July 8, 2026 for those event-specific arrangements.
Verknipt’s 2026 travel information directs drivers to designated park-and-ride lots, describes a parking shuttle, and identifies public transport alternatives. For Electric Picnic, the Garda advisory identified shuttle services linking nearby rail stations with the festival. Neither arrangement should be assumed to apply to another event or a later edition.

Some alternatives still involve a walk. Riot Fest describes one from its off-site lot, while Nocturnal Wonderland’s 2026 parking page says to expect peak-hour delays, allow extra travel time, and follow staff at arrival. Its premium lot description includes easier access and a shuttle, but that is a venue-specific paid option—not a promise of avoiding traffic.

- When you park, photograph the lot or section marker and any nearby row or zone sign.
- Save a pin for the vehicle’s location in your preferred map app, if useful.
- Note the route back to the entrance, including any color-coded path or shuttle stop.
Coachella’s 2026 guidance also recommends photographing the lot-number sign or dropping a pin. Because its maps are posted closer to the event, re-check the official page for the applicable dates before leaving home.

A quick pre-drive checklist
- Confirm the current event date, official lot, entrance, parking ticket or reservation rules, and opening hours.
- Check road closures, controlled routes, event signs, maps, accessibility details, and overflow instructions.
- Compare any shuttle, park-and-ride, public transport, bus, or drop-off option, including its return service.
- Leave extra time, follow on-site traffic control, and park only where authorized.
- Photograph a marker or save a pin so you can find the car after the festival.
