The reliable way to find paths and landmarks in Hillthorn is to treat every card as evidence, not as a checklist. Record what you can actually see, connect a person, object or trace to a place, choose the action that tests that connection, and carry unresolved leads into the next day. Hillthorn’s clock advances whenever you act, so trying every visible route immediately can waste the run. The village, manor, lonely house, inn, inn room, closed school and Winding Trails are documented locations or route systems, but no authoritative source publishes a complete landmark checklist or a guaranteed order for reaching them. This guide shows how to map what is in your current build without inventing a route that may change.
What “find every path” means in Hillthorn
Hillthorn is a wordless, card-based detective game about a disappearance in a secluded mountain community. Its story is revealed through visual Clue cards rather than conventional dialogue. A card may show a person, building, object, terrain, weather, trace, barrier or repeated symbol. Depending on the card, you can choose Investigate, Explore or Talk. Those choices are not interchangeable: each is a test of a different kind of question.

A path is therefore more than a line on an imagined map. It is a route hypothesis supported by a clue. A damaged gate beside a trail is an observation. “The missing couple used this route” is a hypothesis that still needs testing. You have found a meaningful path when a clue explains where it leads, what it connects, or what it lets you investigate next.

The available evidence does not establish a complete, permanent route list, a fixed landmark count or a guaranteed sequence for the full game. Developer preview material names several places, while the demo and updates can change how cards connect. If you see a route order in a community guide, treat it as version-specific and compare it with the cards and actions in your build.

How Hillthorn’s clue cards and clock work
Cards are the map and the dialogue
Hillthorn’s official description says that every eerie detail is revealed through Clue cards that can be investigated, explored or, in some cases, talked to. A card can establish a relationship between a character and an object, point toward terrain, reveal a barrier, or make a previously vague location meaningful. The absence of an available action is also information: the game is telling you that the current evidence does not yet support that test.
Actions consume a limited resource
The clock advances with actions. Official promotional wording warns that there are too many threads to follow and too little time, so a first run is not designed for exhaustive inspection of every card in one day. A detour can cost the opportunity to test a more informative lead. Before acting, ask what specific uncertainty the action should resolve and what new card or relationship would justify the time.
Knowledge can outlast a day
Developer material describes knowledge as persisting across days. Items may fade, while shortcuts or insights can remain. That makes an unsuccessful first run useful: you are learning which people, objects and locations belong together. A card that seems unimportant on day one can become decisive after you learn a name, motive or route connection later.

Use this cycle whenever you are deciding whether to follow a path or investigate a landmark. It keeps observation separate from speculation and creates a map you can improve between runs.
- Inventory the card. Write down every visible person, object, terrain feature, weather condition, trace, barrier and repeated symbol. Note positions and unusual damage or displacement. Do not infer a culprit or destination yet.
- Choose the highest-information connection. Prefer a distinctive person, a damaged or displaced object, a trace crossing a route, or a barrier associated with an unusual item. These clues are more likely to connect two cards or link a card to a location than generic scenery.
- State one testable question. Examples include “Where does this trail go?”, “What caused this mark?”, “Who recognizes this object?” or “Is this entrance blocked for a reason?” A precise question prevents random action spending.
- Match the action to the question. Use Investigate for a concrete object, mark or trace; use Explore when terrain or a visible route may reveal another location; use Talk when a character can answer a specific question. The action list itself signals what the game considers testable.
- Record the result immediately. Note new cards, newly available actions, opened or blocked routes, and relationships that became stronger or weaker. Include a failed or unproductive action; it prevents you from repeating the same detour.
- Carry unresolved leads forward. If a card remains ambiguous, mark what evidence is missing and revisit it after a new relationship or insight is known. Do not force a conclusion simply because the card looked important.
What to investigate first on a new day
Your first actions should maximize information gained per unit of clock rather than cover the most ground. Use the following priority order when several cards compete.
| Priority | Clue type | Why it comes first | Best initial action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Distinctive person or unusual item | It can anchor a relationship that makes several later cards interpretable. | Talk for a specific question, or Investigate the item. |
| 2 | Damaged, displaced or marked object | Physical anomalies often identify what happened and where to look next. | Investigate. |
| 3 | Trace crossing a route | A footprint, scrape or other trace can connect a person or object to terrain. | Investigate, then Explore the indicated route if supported. |
| 4 | Barrier with an unusual associated object | The combination may explain how to open an entrance without spending actions on a blind search. | Investigate the object first; Explore the barrier when a lead points there. |
| 5 | Generic landscape or repeated scenery | It is difficult to interpret without a person, trace or object to provide context. | Record it and defer unless another card points to it. |
This is a decision framework, not an official ranking. If a card offers only one action, follow that constraint and record the result. If two actions are available, prefer the one that could connect a person, object and location in a single step.
Documented landmarks and how to handle them
The places below are named in developer previews or update notes. “Documented” does not mean that an official source has published a complete access solution for each one.
| Location or route | What is established | How to map it safely | Access certainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Village | The initial community context for the disappearance. | Use it as the hub for recording which people, objects and outgoing routes are connected. | Documented setting; exact route graph not published. |
| Manor | Named in the location preview. | Look for a person, object or trace that points to it before repeatedly testing entrances. | Location documented; no official complete access sequence stated. |
| Lonely house | Named in the same preview. | Record every relationship attached to its card and revisit when a new character connection appears. | Location documented; current-build route details may vary. |
| Inn | Named location. | Track which cards lead to the inn and what evidence distinguishes the building from the room. | Documented. |
| Inn room | Named separately from the inn. | Check whether a clue changes the available action when moving between the two cards. | Documented; an update changed the time cost of movement. |
| Closed school | Preview material says you must find a way in. | Search for the key relationship, object or route clue; do not publish an unverified lock solution. | Entrance requirement documented; solution not established. |
| Winding Trails | A route system with branches and feedback for wrong paths. | Map each branch by the clue that led to it and record wrong turns as route information. | Documented route system; branch order is build-sensitive. |
How to find the school without wasting actions
The closed school is the clearest example of Hillthorn’s evidence-first design. Preview material confirms that you must find a way in, but it does not provide a verified universal sequence. Treat the entrance as a question, not as a prompt to click every available action.

1. Inventory the entrance card
Record the condition of the door, windows, surrounding terrain, any marks, and every object shown nearby. A barrier by itself is low-information; a barrier paired with a distinctive object or trace is a lead.
2. Search for the relationship, not a random key
Use the village, inn, manor, lonely house and trail cards to identify who has a reason to know about the school. Talk to a character only when you can ask about a specific object, event or route. Investigate a physical clue before exploring a distant branch that has no connection to the entrance.
3. Revisit after knowledge persists
If the school remains closed after a reasonable test, record the missing relationship and continue another thread. Later knowledge or a persistent shortcut may unlock a new action. Returning every hour to the same door spends clock without adding evidence.
4. Verify the current build
Because the published material does not state the lock solution, any exact sequence found in a player guide should be checked against the game version and platform you are using. A guide that names an item or card absent from your build is not proof that you missed a step.
How to approach the manor and lonely house
Both the manor and lonely house are named locations, but no authoritative source establishes a complete route order for either. Their cards should therefore be treated as endpoints in a relationship network rather than as destinations to brute-force.
Use people as anchors
When a character is associated with a building, note whether the association is direct (“seen there”), material (“owns an object found there”) or inferential (“a trace could connect them”). Direct and material links deserve an action first; inferential links should remain hypotheses until another card supports them.
Use objects to bridge locations
A displaced object, damaged fitting or repeated symbol can connect the village to the manor or house more efficiently than exploring every intervening landscape card. Investigate the object, write down the resulting location or character, and only then spend an Explore action on the route.
Do not assume both sites share one route
The names appear together in preview material, but that does not establish that one unlocks the other or that they must be visited in a fixed order. Map each site’s incoming clues separately until the game supplies a connection.

Mapping Winding Trails and wrong paths
Steam update notes specifically mention improved feedback for wrong paths in Winding Trails. A wrong turn is therefore useful evidence about the route network, not necessarily a permanent failure.
- Write the card or clue that caused you to enter the branch.
- Record the branch direction or landmark shown before the wrong-path feedback appears.
- Note whether the game returns you to the previous card, consumes additional time, or changes an available action.
- Mark the branch as disproved for that lead, not as universally impossible. A later relationship may make the same terrain relevant.
- On a later attempt, test the untried branch only when a new clue points there.
Compare candidate routes on five practical axes: information gained per action, whether the route connects a person, object and location, whether it opens persistent knowledge or a shortcut, clock cost, and whether it is required for a named landmark such as the school or manor. These criteria help you choose between routes without pretending that the game publishes an official best path.
Revisiting cards across days and attempts
A first run should produce a notebook of relationships, not a demand to see every landmark. At the end of a day, separate your notes into three lists:
Recommended Free Tools
- Established: a card action produced a new card, confirmed a person–place link, or opened a route.
- Disproved for now: an action led to a wrong path, produced no relevant connection, or showed that a hypothesis lacked support.
- Unresolved: a card contains a barrier, trace or symbol whose meaning requires knowledge you do not yet have.
On the next day, begin with one unresolved item that can be tested using an established relationship. This is more efficient than restarting with a random landmark. Knowledge that persists can change the value of an old card, while an item that fades may require a different route or timing.
A practical notebook template
Use one row per card or route. Keep observations and interpretations in separate columns so a theory does not become mistaken for a fact.
| Card or route | Observed details | Available action | Question tested | Result | Next revisit condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example: damaged gate | Broken hinge, trail beyond, repeated symbol | Investigate; Explore | What caused the damage? | Connects to an object card | Return after identifying the object’s owner |
| Example: school entrance | Closed door, no confirmed key | Investigate; possibly Explore | Who or what explains access? | Unresolved | After a character or object link appears |
Replace the examples with your own cards. The important fields are the action, the exact question and the condition for returning; a bare list of place names will not tell you why a route failed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common ways players miss clues
Following every visible trail immediately
Why it fails: the clock advances and a generic landscape may reveal little without context.
Fix: wait until a person, object or trace points to the trail, then Explore it with a stated question.
Confusing an observation with a solution
Why it fails: seeing a damaged gate does not prove who used it or where it leads.
Fix: write the physical observation first and label the explanation as a hypothesis until another card confirms it.

Using Talk without a specific question
Why it fails: a character may not provide useful information unless the conversation tests an identified relationship.
Fix: connect the person to an object, trace or place before spending the action.
Repeating an unproductive action in the same day
Why it fails: time is spent without changing the evidence state.
Fix: record the result, switch to a lead with higher information value, and revisit later when knowledge has changed.
Assuming a community route is universal
Why it fails: updates, platforms and demo content can alter card relationships or timing.
Fix: verify the guide’s version and use your own card results as the authority for the current build.

Treating a wrong path as wasted progress
Why it fails: Winding Trails now gives clearer feedback for wrong paths, making the result part of your map.
Fix: record which clue led there and avoid that branch only for the current hypothesis.
Inn and inn-room movement
The inn and inn room are listed as separate named locations. A Steam update states that moving between them no longer consumes in-game time. That change matters when planning a route: you can use the two cards as distinct evidence contexts without treating the transition itself as another clock expense. Continue to record which clues are available in each card, because a free movement does not prove that the same actions or relationships are available in both.
Demo, full release and version checks
The free Hillthorn Demo released on February 19, 2026 and contains a few locations, puzzles and an overview of the game loop. A Steam listing initially showed a planned November 2026 full release; a later dated Steam Community announcement named November 10, 2026 and additional Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android platforms. Because November 10 is a planned date rather than a guarantee that the final build is already available, check the current storefront before relying on a full-game route guide.
The demo is useful for learning the lead–test–record method, but it should not be treated as proof that every full-game landmark, branch or ending is present. Likewise, a route discovered in one platform build may not describe another platform’s current card set. When documenting your own map, write the platform, build or release context beside each discovery.

You can consider a route documented for your purposes when each entry has all of the following:
Best Value
- The card or landmark name as it appears in your build.
- The clue that led to it and the action used.
- The observable result, including a wrong-path message or blocked entrance.
- Any person, object or trace relationship established by the action.
- Whether the route, shortcut or insight persisted into a later day.
- The build or platform in which you observed it.
This standard is more dependable than claiming to have found “every path” from a single playthrough. It also makes your notes useful if an update changes a card, action or time cost.
FAQ
Is there an official complete list of every Hillthorn landmark?
No complete authoritative checklist is published in the available developer and store material. The village, manor, lonely house, inn, inn room, closed school and Winding Trails are documented, but additional routes or landmarks may appear in the full game or change by version.
How do I get into the closed school?
Preview material confirms that you must find a way in, but it does not establish a verified universal lock solution. Build the access lead through a person, object or trace, record blocked attempts, and revisit the entrance after new knowledge persists.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I explore every path on day one?
No. Actions advance the clock. Prioritize clues that can connect a person, object and location, and carry ambiguous cards into a later day instead of spending time on unsupported branches.
What is the best action for a trail?
Use Explore when terrain or a visible route could reveal another location, but only after a clue gives the trail context. Use Investigate for a concrete mark or trace and Talk for a character who can answer a specific question.
Do wrong turns permanently ruin a run?
Not necessarily. Winding Trails has clearer wrong-path feedback in a Steam update. Record the branch and the clue that led there; treat the result as information about the route network and adjust your next test.
Are routes from the demo valid for the full game?
The demo teaches the game loop but contains only a few locations and puzzles. Do not assume that its route order, card set or access conditions represent the planned full release without checking the current version.
