To find DRM-free games that remain playable offline, verify the specific game and store build—not just whether its launcher has an Offline Mode. Look for a clear promise that single-player content works without authentication or an internet connection, check what online features are excluded, and save a standalone installer if you want to reinstall later.
What “DRM-free” means for offline play
DRM-free is a stronger claim than “works in a launcher’s Offline Mode.” A client may let you start some games without a live connection, but that does not establish that a game has no copy protection, will work without account authentication, or can be installed again offline.

GOG’s distribution terms define DRM-free games as playable through the entirety of their single-player content offline, without DRM, copy protection, or online-connection requirements, except for multiplayer games or elements and any exceptions specified in the game’s distribution form. Its developer documentation likewise says games should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, whether the Galaxy client is present, or internet availability: GOG Developer Docs: Porting Your Games from Steam to GOG. These are GOG’s stated policies; they do not establish that every store or every game follows the same rules.

GOG’s 17 March 2022 statement says single-player mode has to be accessible offline and that the Galaxy client is optional for accessing that mode: GOG’s commitment to DRM-free gaming. Treat that as a storefront policy, then check the individual listing and distribution details for the title you intend to buy.

How to check whether a particular game will work
- Read the exact store listing and publisher notes. Search for requirements involving an internet connection, launcher, account sign-in, activation, or third-party services. Read the notes for the edition and store build you are considering.
- Confirm the scope of offline play. Determine whether the single-player campaign and progression work offline, and identify features that depend on servers—such as multiplayer, friends, leaderboards, cloud saves, timed events, or account-linked rewards.
- Check whether a launcher is optional. A statement that the client supports offline use is not the same as a statement that the game runs without the client or account authentication. Look for an explicit answer from the store or publisher.
- Look for a standalone installer. Confirm that you can download and retain the installer for the title, and check that it corresponds to the version or update you want. Download it before you lose internet access.
- Compare store builds separately. If the game is sold on multiple stores, verify the DRM and offline requirements for each one. Do not assume that a DRM-free build on one store means another store’s build behaves the same way.
Offline play, installation, and online features are different
A game can have an offline-capable single-player campaign while still relying on servers for other parts of the experience. Offline access does not preserve multiplayer, friends lists, leaderboards, or similar server-dependent functions. Check each feature separately rather than treating “offline playable” as an all-or-nothing description.
Installation is a separate question. A game that runs without a connection after installation may still require an online store or launcher to download or restore it. A standalone installer can address that installation problem, but it does not guarantee future operating-system compatibility or restore services that depend on a publisher’s servers.

What Steam Offline Mode does—and does not—tell you
Steam Support documents how to use Offline Mode, but the existence of that mode does not prove a game is DRM-free or guarantee that every title will start offline. Steam Support also describes a situation in which a game cannot be started in Offline Mode: Steam Support: Offline Mode.
If you plan to rely on Steam Offline Mode, enable and set it up while online, then check game-specific support information. Treat “works in Steam Offline Mode” as a narrower assurance than “DRM-free,” and verify the game’s own requirements before counting on it during a trip or outage.

How to keep a usable copy for later
If long-term reinstallability matters, keep a backup of the standalone installer in storage you control. GOG describes offline installers and backup copies as part of its DRM-free approach: GOG’s commitment to DRM-free gaming.
- Save the installer for the intended game version or update, not just a shortcut to the store.
- Keep any separately downloaded content or dependencies you need, where the store makes them available.
- Use a second storage location for an additional copy if losing the installer would be costly. An external drive is one option, not a requirement for offline play.
- Check that your backup is complete and readable before relying on it.
For GOG games, installers are generated automatically, and GOG says post-launch updates can take several hours to appear. Check the version shown for the installer before treating it as the update you want to preserve: GOG Developer Docs: Downloading Games.

Use the same checks for each candidate, based on its specific store build. Record “not stated” when the store or publisher has not answered a point; do not infer that an unmentioned requirement is absent.
