How to Set Up a Samsung SmartTag and Configure Left-Behind Alerts

Pair your Samsung SmartTag through SmartThings and choose the right notification: a left-behind warning or a later location update for a disconnected tag.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pair a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag in the SmartThings app, then enable the alert that matches what you need. On SmartTag2, Notify when left behind warns when you move away from the tag; Notify me when it’s found reports a later location update for a disconnected tag. These are different notifications, not two names for the same out-of-range alert.

What you need before setup

  • A Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and a Galaxy phone or tablet with SmartThings installed.
  • For left-behind notifications, location services must be enabled on the phone or tablet. Samsung’s guidance for the original Galaxy SmartTag specifies Android 12 or later for this feature; check support for your exact model and software combination because requirements and menus vary. Samsung’s Find notification guidance

Pair the SmartTag with SmartThings

  1. Activate the tag. Press its button to prepare it for pairing. Samsung’s pairing guide
  2. Open SmartThings and add the device. Follow the on-screen prompts for your tag. For the original SmartTag and SmartTag+, Samsung’s guided flow includes choosing setup preferences such as location and room. Samsung’s SmartTag and SmartTag+ guide
  3. Follow the model-specific setup flow. For SmartTag2, Samsung documents pairing through SmartThings, with manual setup or QR-code scanning available as setup methods. Choose the option shown for your device and app version. Samsung’s SmartTag2 pairing instructions
  4. Find the paired tag in SmartThings Find. Select it to use the finding and management options available for your model. Samsung’s earlier SmartTag guidance describes map, nearby search, navigation and ring options. Samsung’s SmartTag and SmartTag+ guide

SmartTag generations do not necessarily show identical screens or offer identical features. Use the prompts and support instructions for your exact tag rather than assuming every model uses the same menu path.

Turn on an alert for leaving the tag behind

SmartTag2

  1. Open SmartThings.
  2. Go to Life → Find → More → Notify when left behind.
  3. Turn on the switch. Add a safe location, such as home, if you do not want an alert when you leave the tag there. Samsung’s SmartTag2 notification instructions

Samsung’s instructions also require location services to be enabled for the documented Find alert behavior. A safe location suppresses the departure notification there, so check your saved safe locations if an alert does not arrive where expected. Samsung’s Find notification guidance

Other SmartTag models

Samsung documents a left-behind notification for the Galaxy SmartTag and specifies a Galaxy phone or tablet running Android 12 or later. The feature’s availability and setup path can differ by model, app version and region, so consult the instructions for your specific tag before looking for the SmartTag2 menu path. SmartThings option What it tells you When to use it
Notify when left behind An alert that you have moved away from the item. When you want a departure warning. Safe locations can suppress the alert there. Samsung’s SmartTag2 notification instructions
Notify me when it’s found A notification when the tag’s location is updated, even when the tag and phone are not connected. When a lost, disconnected tag gets a later location update; it is not an immediate warning that you left the tag behind. For SmartTag2, the path to the second option is Life → Find → More → Notify me when it’s found. Samsung’s SmartTag2 notification instructions

If pairing or alerts do not work

The tag does not appear during pairing

  • Move the tag within Bluetooth range of the phone or tablet, then search again. Samsung’s pairing guide
  • If it still does not appear, Samsung’s Ireland guide advises resetting the tag before searching again. Follow the instructions for your model; do not use the original SmartTag reset procedure for SmartTag2 unless its own instructions say to. Samsung’s pairing guide

A left-behind alert does not arrive

  • Confirm that phone or tablet location services are on. Samsung’s Find notification guidance
  • Check that Notify when left behind is enabled for the tag and that the place where you expect an alert is not saved as a safe location. Samsung’s SmartTag2 notification instructions
  • Verify that the feature is supported for your model and phone or tablet. Samsung’s published instructions cover specific models and regions; they do not establish one universal troubleshooting procedure for every device and app release.

Battery or reset instructions differ by generation

Samsung’s guidance for the original SmartTag family identifies a CR2032 battery and explains how to remove and reinsert it when resetting that model. Do not assume the same battery or service steps apply to SmartTag2; check that model’s instructions. Samsung’s SmartTag and SmartTag+ guide
