Add the Remote control in Control Center, then select your Apple TV or supported smart TV to connect. The current iPhone route is Add Controls > Add a Control > Remote; on iOS 17 and earlier, Apple documents Settings > Control Center instead.
Add Remote to Control Center

Open Control Center. On iPhone X or later, swipe down from the top-right corner. On iPhone 8 or earlier, swipe up from the bottom edge.

Tap Add Controls, then Add a Control. Scroll to Remote or search for it, then tap it to add the control.

On iOS 17 and earlier, open Settings > Control Center and tap Add beside Apple TV Remote.

These are alternative setup paths based on the iOS interface. Adding the control does not connect it to a television yet.

If prompted, enter the four-digit passcode displayed by the TV on your iPhone.

Apple says the Control Center remote works with Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD and AirPlay-compatible smart TVs. To use it with a compatible smart TV, first add the television to the Home app and assign it to a room. The iPhone and TV must also be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If Apple TV Remote is not showing or connecting

Check the network: Confirm the iPhone and target TV are on the same Wi-Fi network. Check Settings > Wi-Fi on the iPhone and Settings > Network on Apple TV.

Check smart TV setup: If you are connecting to a smart TV rather than Apple TV, make sure it is AirPlay-compatible, added to the Home app and assigned to a room.

Update and restart: Install the latest available iOS or iPadOS and tvOS updates, then restart the iPhone or iPad and Apple TV or compatible TV.

Volume control and physical remotes
Control Center volume buttons control Apple TV volume when the Apple TV is configured with a HomePod, soundbar or other AirPlay-compatible speakers. Without that audio setup, use the television’s own remote to adjust volume.
You do not need to buy a physical Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote to add the iPhone control. Apple’s separate lost Apple TV remote guidance concerns replacing a missing or broken handheld remote, a different problem from setting up the built-in iPhone remote.
Which setup path should you use?
