In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings, then inspect the relevant device in the classic Sound dialog. If your audio hardware and driver expose jack details, the device properties can help identify a port; Windows does not show that information for every PC.
What Windows can—and cannot—tell you about an audio jack
Windows can display jack information when the audio adapter and its driver provide the relevant jack-description property. Microsoft says the purpose is to help users find the correct connector for an endpoint such as a microphone, headphones, or speakers. The details may include a connector’s color, physical location, type, and other features, but the adapter and driver determine what is available. Microsoft’s Jack Description Property documentation describes the capability; it does not promise a dedicated jack-information page on every Windows 11 PC.

If you do not see jack details in a device’s properties, that alone does not mean the physical port is broken. The hardware or driver may simply not expose the information to Windows.

Open the classic Sound controls
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select More sound settings to open the classic Sound dialog.
- Choose Playback for an output device, such as headphones or speakers, or Recording for an input device, such as a microphone.
- Select the device that corresponds to the connection you want to check and open its properties.
These are the sound controls Microsoft recommends using when checking Windows audio devices. The exact properties and information shown can differ by PC and driver. See Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting instructions.

Find the physical port that matches the device
If jack information appears, compare the listed connector type or location with the actual ports on the PC. Some computers use green for audio output and pink for microphone input; others label ports with words or icons. These colors are examples, not a universal rule. When the markings are unclear or differ from what Windows shows, check the documentation or support information for your PC or sound card.
If the expected device is missing
A jack may be connected but its audio device may not appear in the Sound dialog. Check whether the device is disabled, then use Device Manager to look for detection problems. Microsoft’s guidance includes showing hidden devices and scanning for hardware changes. If the device remains missing, obtain an appropriate current audio driver from the support site for the PC or sound card. Follow Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting steps for the applicable Windows controls.

If the device appears but you hear no sound
Detection and jack identification do not confirm that Windows is sending audio to the connection you intend to use. Open Settings > System > Sound, select the intended output device, and check that its volume is up and it is not muted. If sound still does not work, run the Windows Audio troubleshooter in Get Help.
