Start at the Stuart Hall Archive Project’s Digital Resources page to explore its online projects and bibliography. To locate archival records and any available digital copies, search the Cadbury Research Library catalogue for collection reference US121. The archive is not fully digitized: each catalogue record sets out its own description, access status and, where available, route to a digital copy.
Which online resource should you use?
The resources serve different purposes. An interactive project or bibliography can help you explore Hall’s work, while the Cadbury catalogue is the route to descriptions of the papers and item-level access information.

How to search the Stuart Hall Archive catalogue
- Open the Cadbury Research Library catalogue and search for US121.
- Open the Stuart Hall collection-level record, then consult its finding aid and item descriptions to identify relevant material.
- Read the individual record for its access status and any digital-copy link. Do not assume an item has been digitized because another item does.
- If the catalogue does not answer a research-access question, contact the Project Archivist. The catalogue says the collection is undergoing full cataloguing as part of a 2024–2026 project and warns that access to some parts may be difficult during this work.
The catalogue describes papers, annotated drafts and published writings, correspondence, course materials, interview transcripts, recordings and ephemera. Its current collection-level record lists 102 boxes and a date span of 1954–2018; those dates describe the record’s span, not a claim that every document was created by Hall during those years. The arrangement broadly follows phases of his professional and political life, although the catalogue notes inconsistencies.
How to open a digitized item
Some item descriptions link to copies hosted through a separate service. For example, the open notebook Difference and Power (finding number US121/B/2/1/47) is described as handwritten notes on topics including modernisation theory, Eric Hobsbawm, decoding, Blackness and power. Its catalogue record says copies in TIFF, JPG and PDF formats are available via DRYAD; it also notes that the files were ingested to Soteria+. Follow the link in that item’s record for the available files.
This is an example, not a general guarantee. The archive project describes digitization as selective, and the catalogue says some reel-to-reel recordings and born-digital floppy disk content are not currently available to researchers. A digital file’s availability also does not, by itself, grant permission to reproduce or publish it.
Check access restrictions and publication rights
The catalogue says most of the collection is open to registered researchers, subject to restrictions. Small portions may be closed because they contain personal information about living people, and cataloguing work may affect access to some material. Check the specific record before planning a visit or requesting an item.

For published use of collection material, the catalogue requires advance written permission from the Director of Special Collections. It also says copyright holders for unpublished material can be difficult to identify: the library may assist, but users remain responsible for securing copyright clearance. The archive project separately describes data-protection and copyright barriers, particularly for digitized BBC material; consult its archive project overview for that context.

The Global Cultural Studies Bibliography on the project’s Digital Resources page is described as a working bibliography of more than 750 texts from 1969–2012. It helps trace cultural-studies writing, but it is not a catalogue of digitized archival holdings.

Nick Beech’s bibliography on the Stuart Hall Foundation site covers writing, teaching material, radio and television broadcasts, lectures, seminars and public-enquiry contributions, drawing on sources that include the British Library, Cadbury Research Library, UNESCO Digital Archive, BBC Genome, the Raphael Samuel Archive and Hall’s private papers. Beech notes that it is primarily limited to English-language publications, excludes material after 2015 and has gaps. Treat it as a discovery guide, then verify a particular item with the relevant catalogue or source.
The Foundation also points readers to the Cadbury catalogue and finding aid. Its reference to the Selected Writings of Stuart Hall, under the general editorship of Catherine Hall and Bill Schwarz and published by Duke University Press, is a route to published writings—not a way to access digitized archive holdings.
