To minimize the cost of exchanging Swiss francs (CHF), compare the full cost—not just the quoted rate—and choose the destination’s local currency when paying by card or withdrawing from an ATM. The right option depends on the currency, amount, need for cash, and fees on your card and at the ATM.
Compare the total cost, not just the exchange rate
An exchange can cost you through several separate charges. Compare what you will actually receive or pay after accounting for:

- The provider’s exchange-rate markup over the relevant market rate.
- A separate foreign transaction or currency-conversion fee from your card issuer.
- Cash withdrawal, counter-service, handling, or delivery fees.
- Any surcharge charged by the ATM operator.
A low transaction fee does not guarantee a good deal if the exchange rate is poor. Likewise, a favorable rate can be offset by a separate fee. Compare the final CHF cost or the final amount of foreign currency received for the same transaction.
Choose the route that fits your cash needs
Buy foreign banknotes in Switzerland
Buying cash before you travel can be convenient if you need money as soon as you arrive. Compare the bank’s banknote sell rate and any handling or delivery charges with the cost of using your card or withdrawing cash abroad. The banknote rate for physical cash can differ from the forex rate used for electronic transactions; Moneyland.ch explains this distinction in its guide to forex and banknote rates.

Some less common currencies may not be available immediately at a Swiss branch and may need to be ordered several days ahead, according to Moneyland.ch’s guide to foreign currency cash at Swiss banks. Check availability and lead time if you need cash on arrival.
Exchange cash at your destination
Banks and exchange bureaus may offer counter service, but fees can be high. Treat this as a convenience or backup option: ask how much foreign currency you will receive after all charges, rather than judging by a displayed rate alone. The available guidance does not establish one destination provider as universally cheapest.

Pay by card in the local currency
When you pay in the destination currency, your card issuer handles the conversion under its exchange-rate and fee schedule. Check the issuer’s rate markup and foreign transaction fee. In its 2026 Swiss-market comparison, Moneyland.ch reported that some providers, including Wise and Yuh, had favorable rates in sampled comparisons. That is not a guarantee that either will be cheapest for your card, currency, transaction, or current terms; Moneyland.ch’s comparison used 14 sampling dates in January and February 2026 and covered euros, US dollars, and Thai baht. An international ATM withdrawal can involve your card’s conversion rate and withdrawal fees, as well as a separate ATM-operator surcharge. Check your card terms and the fee disclosure on the ATM screen before confirming. Moneyland.ch notes that bank-operated ATMs are more likely to be cheaper than some independent operators, but the actual fee and rate need to be checked for the specific withdrawal: ATM fees abroad.

At a foreign terminal or ATM, decline conversion to CHF
If a card terminal or ATM asks whether to charge you in Swiss francs or the local currency, choose the local currency. The CHF option is dynamic currency conversion (DCC): the merchant or ATM converts the transaction before it reaches your card issuer. That rate can be unfavorable, and choosing CHF does not necessarily remove your card issuer’s foreign transaction fee. Choosing local currency avoids the DCC rate; your issuer’s own rate and fees still apply. Moneyland.ch explains the choice in its DCC guide.
To illustrate the possible difference, Moneyland.ch’s June 15, 2026 article estimated that a €1,000 purchase could cost CHF 25–50 in conversion costs with a typical Swiss credit card when paid in euros, compared with CHF 120–150 when converted to CHF through DCC. For a low-cost provider, the article estimated about CHF 1 when paying in euros versus around CHF 95 with DCC. These are the guide’s examples, not a forecast for every card or purchase. It also reported typical Swiss card markups of 1–3% above interbank rates for CHF-to-euro transactions, and said DCC markups can reach 10% or more in extreme cases—not as a normal rate. See Moneyland.ch’s guide to paying abroad.

Use a quick comparison before you exchange
- Set the transaction: identify the currency and amount, and decide how much cash you actually need.
- Check your card terms: find the conversion markup, foreign transaction fee, and any cash-withdrawal fee for the card you plan to use.
- Compare cash alternatives: ask a Swiss bank for its banknote rate and all charges; if considering a destination counter, compare the final amount offered after fees.
- For an ATM withdrawal: check your card’s fees and the ATM’s on-screen surcharge before accepting.
- At the payment or ATM prompt: choose the local currency and decline conversion to CHF.
Use current terms for your own card and the specific currency and amount. Provider comparisons can change, and a result for one currency or transaction size does not establish the cheapest choice for another.
