Check what the manufacturer tested, compare it with an independent test of a similar workload, then judge whether that result covers your time away from a charger. A local-video figure, Wi-Fi browsing result and gaming test measure different kinds of use.
Start with the test behind the advertised number
Look for a footnote or methodology link on the product page. Record the workload—such as local video playback, video streaming, web browsing or a mixed-app benchmark—and the stated brightness, wireless connection and power settings. A result without those details is difficult to compare with another laptop’s claim.

Microsoft’s Surface disclosures illustrate why the test type matters: the vendor reports local-video and web-browsing results separately, and describes the conditions for each. For the 13-inch Surface Laptop test, its web-browsing procedure accessed 12 popular websites across multiple open tabs with Wi-Fi connected. The local-video test used default settings except brightness set to 150 nits and auto-brightness disabled. Those are test conditions, not recommended settings for every user. Microsoft’s Surface battery testing and estimated performance notes also caution that “Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage, and other factors.”
Match the test to what you do
- Browser, documents and email: Give more weight to Wi-Fi browsing or mixed-productivity tests than to local-video playback.
- Downloaded movies: A local-video test is the closest available comparison because it does not represent continuous internet browsing.
- Streaming and video calls: Look for a test that keeps Wi-Fi active; local playback does not model that connection use.
- Gaming, rendering or other demanding work: Use a heavy-workload result. Light browsing figures are a poor guide to sustained high-load use.
For example, Microsoft’s 2026 disclosure for the Snapdragon Surface Laptop (8th Edition) lists up to 20 hours of local video playback and up to 16 hours of web browsing for the 13.8-inch configuration. For the 15-inch configuration, it lists up to 19 hours of video and up to 14 hours of browsing. These are separate results from Microsoft’s tests for those configurations—not a conversion formula or a guarantee for other Surface models. See Microsoft’s test descriptions and claim footnotes.

Cross-check independent results fairly
Look for reviewers who explain their methods and separate unlike workloads. RTINGS separates battery tests for browsing, video playback and gaming; its approach reflects that a laptop’s power draw, as well as its battery capacity, affects runtime. Which? describes video-streaming and Wi-Fi-browsing tests, and says it repeats browsing runs when needed to check consistency.
Compare results only when the workload and conditions are reasonably close. Screen brightness, Wi-Fi state, exact device configuration and power settings can all affect a result. Microsoft’s battery-life measurement setup checklist includes device and software details, display luminance, network, environment, charge level and repeated runs among the factors to record.

A benchmark can provide another useful reference, but it is still a defined test. BAPCo says MobileMark 25 uses real applications and workloads while measuring performance alongside battery life. The older MobileMark 2018 methodology says its results approximate typical use, while individual experience can vary. Read BAPCo’s MobileMark 2018 overview. Don’t compare a benchmark runtime directly with a manufacturer’s video-playback result as though they were the same test.
Use this checklist to compare two laptops
- Identify the exact configuration. Note the model, screen size, processor, graphics, memory, display and battery configuration where available. A model name alone may not identify the device used for the test.
- Write down the test conditions. Record workload, brightness, Wi-Fi status, power settings and whether the result is a single run or an average of repeated runs.
- Find a close workload match. Prioritize browsing or mixed productivity for office and school tasks, local playback for downloaded video, and a demanding-use test for gaming or rendering.
- Compare the circumstances, not just the hours. Check whether the figures come from similar configurations and test conditions. Battery capacity in watt-hours is useful context, but capacity alone does not determine runtime.
- Compare the result with your day. Think about your screen brightness, calls, wireless use, number of active apps, task intensity and how long you need to work before you can charge.
There is no evidence-based universal percentage to subtract from every advertised figure. Instead, use the closest available test as a reference and leave a practical margin for the parts of your day the test does not reproduce. If uninterrupted use away from an outlet is essential, a result that only just covers your planned time is a riskier fit than one with room to spare.

For a used laptop, check battery condition separately
A review result describes a tested device under particular conditions; it does not tell you how much capacity an older machine has retained. For Windows 11, Microsoft documents the powercfg /batteryreport command, which creates an HTML report with battery and usage details. Surface owners can compare full-charge capacity with design capacity. On a Mac laptop, check the cycle count and battery condition; Apple says cycle-count limits depend on the model and that batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of original capacity at their maximum cycle count under its guidance. These checks help assess battery wear, but they do not predict runtime for your specific workload.
