A display-path problem, Windows or driver issue, installation fault, compatibility problem, or power issue can look similar. Start with reversible checks, then move to software recovery or hardware inspection according to whether the PC reaches Windows.
First, pinpoint when the failure happens
Note whether the display goes blank immediately after power-on, during motherboard POST, as Windows starts, after login, during driver installation, or only under gaming or another GPU-heavy workload. Record any Windows stop code, driver-installer error, beep pattern, or motherboard debug indicator. A stop code or named module is a clue, not proof that the graphics card is the cause: unexpected restarts can involve hardware, drivers, or software. Microsoft’s stop-code guidance explains how to use that information.

Try display and driver resets before opening the PC
Check the monitor, cable, input, and output
- Confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the input used by the PC.
- For a desktop with a discrete graphics card, connect the display cable to an output on the card, not an unrelated motherboard video output.
- Reseat the cable. If possible, test a known-good cable, another output on the card, or another monitor.
Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance distinguishes issues that occur at startup, after login, or following an update, and recommends checking connections and display modes. If Windows may be running behind a blank screen, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. A brief flicker or beep can indicate the reset was triggered. To cycle display modes, press Windows+P, then P and Enter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse Safe Mode if normal Windows startup is unusable
If you can reach Windows, try the display and driver steps below. If the screen remains blank or ordinary startup fails, Microsoft’s blank-screen guide describes using Windows Recovery Environment to start Safe Mode. Safe Mode can help determine whether Windows can start with a reduced set of drivers and services; it does not by itself establish that the GPU is defective.

Recover from a driver error or a Windows-only black screen
If the PC completes POST and the problem starts as Windows loads, after login, or during a driver installation, use the software path before changing hardware.
- Identify the adapter: In Windows, open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Roll back a recent update: If the issue began directly after a graphics-driver update, open the adapter’s properties and choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Update or reinstall through a trusted route: If rollback is unavailable or the fault predates the update, use Windows Update or the GPU maker’s official driver page. Microsoft describes updating and reinstalling in its Device Manager driver guidance and advises against unofficial driver-download sites.
For a persistent blank screen, use the Safe Mode route in Microsoft’s guide before uninstalling a driver. Follow the GPU maker’s instructions and have the correct official driver available before restarting. Clean-install procedures are not universal: AMD’s Radeon stability guidance describes a Factory Reset option in its installer, while Intel’s Arc driver guidance gives clean-install advice for certain driver-update crash cases. Use the instructions that match your card and driver; a third-party driver-cleaning utility is not a required first step.

If the PC fails before Windows loads, check installation and power
If there is no signal during POST or the computer cannot reach Windows, a Windows driver is less likely to be the first thing to investigate. For a desktop PC, shut it down fully, disconnect power, and follow the computer and graphics-card manuals before opening the case. If you are not comfortable working inside the PC, have a qualified technician inspect it.
- Check that the card is fully seated in the recommended PCIe slot, the slot latch is engaged, and the bracket is secured.
- Check that every power connector required by the exact card model is fully inserted. Do not force a plug or choose a PSU cable solely because it looks similar.
- Where feasible, remove a PCIe riser temporarily for diagnosis and connect the card directly to the motherboard slot.
Intel’s Arc installation guidance calls out card seating, power connectors, and card-specific PSU requirements. AMD’s Radeon stability guidance also advises checking direct GPU power connections and, where practical, connecting the card directly to the motherboard. These are checks to narrow the cause; they do not mean every black screen is an installation fault.

Check compatibility and PSU capacity for the exact system
Compare the exact graphics-card model’s installation and power requirements with the motherboard maker’s compatibility information and BIOS notes, and with the power needs of the complete PC. Do not apply a wattage recommendation from a different card to yours. Intel’s Arc guidance explicitly notes that PSU requirements vary by card, so model-specific figures should stay tied to the model they describe.
A PSU problem can cause boot failures, crashes, hangs, reboots, or display corruption. AMD’s power-supply troubleshooting guidance recommends comparing the PSU’s rated output with the system’s combined needs and checking its condition and airflow. Testing with a known-good PSU may help when appropriate, but do not attempt a replacement or test that is outside your comfort level; ask a qualified technician.

Isolate crashes that persist after basic checks
Once the PC is stable enough to troubleshoot, change one factor at a time and keep a record. Return CPU and GPU settings to stock: remove overclocks and undervolts, and disable tuning utilities while diagnosing. Note the driver version, temperatures, workload, timing, Windows stop code, and any relevant Event Viewer error.
AMD recommends a systematic stability check, including temperatures, installation, driver rollback or reset, and a component swap where feasible. Intel’s Arc A770 troubleshooting guidance discusses temperature checks and testing with essential components in that model-specific context. Simplifying the system or testing a known-good component can help, but change only what you can safely identify and reinstall.

If the card works in another known-good PC but the original system still fails, investigate the original PC’s motherboard, PSU, BIOS, memory, and software configuration. If the same fault follows the card across systems, contact the card maker or seller about support or return options. A swap test narrows the possibilities; it is not a guaranteed diagnosis.
Avoid risky shortcuts
- Do not assume one black screen, driver error, or reboot proves the card is defective.
- Do not download drivers from unofficial sites.
- Do not repeatedly force restarts or interrupt a firmware update. Intel warns in its model-specific Arc black-screen guidance that a failed BIOS update can cause serious damage. Follow the motherboard maker’s exact process and seek help if uncertain.
- Do not assume a universal PSU wattage, BIOS setting, or driver-cleaning routine applies to every system.
Microsoft’s cited support pages cover Windows 10 and 11 as indicated on those pages. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check Microsoft’s current support information if you still use it. GPU driver versions, known issues, power requirements, and BIOS instructions can change, so use current instructions for your exact model.
