The steps depend on its operating system, and sharing can mean revealing or copying the password, handing it off to a nearby device, or showing a QR code. These methods are for networks you’re authorized to use or manage.
Choose the sharing method that fits your device
| Device with access | Ways to help another device connect | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | View or copy a saved password; share with a nearby Apple device; show a network QR code | Nearby Apple sharing has contact and connection requirements. A QR code is a separate option. |
| Mac | View or copy a saved password; share with a nearby Apple device; show a network QR code | Menus may differ by macOS release. |
| Android | Show a QR code for another device to scan | Google’s instructions describe QR sharing, not a guaranteed plaintext password display. |
| Windows | Show a current or saved password; use a QR code if supported; create a separate mobile hotspot | A hotspot is not the same as revealing the home network password. |
On iPhone: view, copy, or share a saved network
View or copy the password
- Open Passwords and tap Wi-Fi.
- Select the network.
- Tap the Password field to reveal it; copy the password if you need to enter it on another device.
These steps are documented in Apple’s iPhone guide.

Share with a nearby Apple device
Unlock the iPhone that is connected to the network. The recipient selects that Wi-Fi network in their device’s Wi-Fi settings; accept the share prompt on your iPhone. Apple says the devices need to be within Wi-Fi and Bluetooth range, neither device can be using Personal Hotspot, and each person must be in the other’s contacts. Apple documents sharing with a nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Show a QR code
Apple also documents a Show Network QR Code option. Use it when the recipient can scan the code; do not assume every sharing method displays the password as readable text.

On Android: share access with a QR code
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
- Tap the connected network, then tap Share.
- Have the other device scan the displayed QR code.
This is the flow in Google’s Android Help. Google’s instructions establish QR-code sharing; they do not promise that the password will appear in plaintext beneath the code. Android releases and manufacturers can use different labels or offer different options, so look for the equivalent network-sharing control if these exact names are absent.

Windows hotspot: share an internet connection, not the router password
A Windows mobile hotspot creates a separate connection with its own name and password. It does not reveal or pass along the password for the existing home Wi-Fi network.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot.
- Choose the connection to share as the source.
- Optionally edit the hotspot name and password, then turn on sharing.
- Connect the second device using the hotspot password or its QR code.

If the password or sharing option is missing
- Check the device and network: Start with a device that is connected to or has saved the network. A device that has never joined it may not have credentials to reveal.
- Look for equivalent labels: Android manufacturers and operating-system versions can change menu names and available controls. Do not assume the Android QR flow will reveal plaintext.
- Use a compatible recipient: Nearby Apple sharing requires the stated contact and radio conditions. QR sharing requires a recipient device that can scan and use the code; manual entry requires access to the password.
- Ask the network administrator: If no authorized device can show the password, check the router label or ask the administrator about the router’s official app or administration page. Consult the router maker’s documentation for the correct method; don’t try to extract credentials from a device or network you do not administer.
Chromebook users
The official instructions cited here do not establish a Chromebook-specific path for revealing or sharing a saved Wi-Fi password. Don’t assume the Android menu steps apply to ChromeOS. Ask the network administrator or consult official Chromebook and network-provider support for the device and software version.
