1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA reliable printer test page can use one millimetre-based layout description to produce a CMYK PDF, an SVG print layout, and preview images rasterized from that PDF. The approach keeps geometry consistent across outputs, but a PDF containing CMYK operators does not by itself guarantee accurate color on a particular printer. The implementation described here uses Astro and pdf-lib, and its author says the generated files have not been tested across a range of real printers.
What the one-layout approach does
Instead of maintaining separate drawings for each output, the project describes sheet geometry once in millimetres, then sends it through three rendering paths. The author describes a static site built with Astro and Tailwind, with pdf-lib generating PDFs, an SVG path providing an in-browser print layout, and Poppler rasterizing the generated PDFs into preview images. In this design, previews come from the PDF output rather than a separately redrawn approximation.

The author says the PDF renderer uses DeviceCMYK operators for fills and strokes and bundles the Inter font, rather than relying on standard-14 Helvetica, which is not embedded. The SVG print version uses a static @page size and print-color-adjust: exact. The author also says each sheet element gets an explicit color to avoid unintended RGB operators in the CMYK sheet. These are implementation descriptions from the project’s author, not an independent inspection of the code or output files. (Project article)
Why share geometry?
One source for positions and dimensions reduces the chance that a PDF, browser-print sheet, and preview drift apart as the design changes. It does not make the rendering technologies identical: PDF and SVG have different output paths, and the browser and printer still participate in producing the final page.

What a CMYK PDF does—and does not—tell you
“Real CMYK” in this context means the PDF encodes device-dependent CMYK color operators, rather than merely showing a screen image that looks like CMYK. That is useful for understanding the file’s color representation, but it is not a promise that the printed result will match a target color.
The W3C Color Module Level 5 Working Draft dated 2026-06-18 explains that calibrated CMYK depends on an ICC profile that corresponds to the ink combination, paper, total ink coverage, and equipment. Device-dependent CMYK can produce unknown results, and a browser or other processor’s approximation may differ substantially from the printed output. The document is a Working Draft, not a final Recommendation. (W3C CSS Color Module Level 5 Working Draft)

Professional print workflows handle this through defined output conditions. Adobe describes PDF/X-1a as converting colors to a destination CMYK space for a press-ready file intended to avoid further color conversions; Oracle notes that the output profile may be provided by the print vendor. That does not mean every office printer or print shop expects a generic PDF/X file or one universal CMYK profile. Ask the printer or print provider which profile and file requirements apply. - File inspection: checks whether the PDF uses the intended color operators and embeds its font.
- Soft proof: simulates expected output on screen using profiles. Adobe says reliability depends on monitor quality, monitor and output-device profiles, and ambient lighting; soft proofing also does not show overprinting behavior.
- Hard proof: is printed output, which reveals how the actual device, ink or toner, and paper behave together.
A CMYK-coded file answers a question about the PDF. A calibrated workflow or physical proof answers different questions about expected and actual reproduction.

How to print the scale test at actual size
The project includes a scale sheet with a 100 mm bar intended to be measured after printing. Its instruction is: “Print at 100% (Actual size). Turn ‘Fit to page’ off.” Scaling the page to fit can change the bar’s length and invalidate the check.
- Choose the matching page size. Use the Letter or A4 version that matches the paper loaded in the printer.
- Open the PDF’s print dialog. Select the intended printer and confirm its paper size matches the PDF.
- Set the scale to 100% or Actual size. Disable “Fit to page” or any equivalent shrink-to-fit option.
- Print, then measure the bar. A correctly scaled 100 mm bar should measure 100 mm. If it does not, check the paper-size selection and scaling controls before treating the result as a printer hardware problem.
The author gives A4-on-Letter as about 94.07% and Letter-on-A4 as about 97.27% when scaled to fit; these are page-dimension arithmetic examples, not printer test results. The project’s scale diagnosis is described as a pure function without a DOM. (Project article)

What the test sheets cover
The site offers sheets for color, black and white, CMYK, alignment, nozzle checks, scale, photo output, and duplex printing. The project article says each sheet carries a QR code that links to a result page using permalink hashes, and that only recognized hashes are applied. That describes the author’s implementation; it is not a security audit.
Different sheets answer different practical questions: a scale sheet checks page sizing and print scaling, an alignment sheet helps inspect registration, and a color or photo sheet gives a visual sample of output. A generated test page cannot by itself identify every cause of a defect; paper, consumables, device settings, and the printer mechanism can all affect what appears on the page.

Limits of the reported checks
- The author says a build step verifies 20 PDFs: Letter and A4 versions of each sheet. This confirms a project build check, not broad hardware compatibility or print accuracy.
- The author says the site has not been tested on a range of real printers.
- The camera-based nozzle check is described as beta and tuned only on synthetic photos; the author says real phone photos of printouts have not been collected.
- Defect photos are described as AI-generated placeholders marked “Illustration,” not real printer-output examples.
- The author reports Lighthouse scores of 94–99 for performance and 100 for accessibility and SEO on the pages measured, while noting that real-host measurements still need to be repeated. These are self-reported page scores, not independent benchmarks.
Those limits matter most when interpreting diagnosis: a page can be generated and validated as a file without proving that its instructions or automated analysis work reliably across real devices and user photos. (Project article)
What this architecture is useful for
The main engineering benefit is consistency: a single geometric description can feed different output formats, while PDF-derived previews reflect the generated PDF path. The CMYK operators make the PDF’s color encoding explicit, but printer-specific accuracy still depends on profiles and output conditions. A sensible validation sequence is therefore to check the file, confirm page size and scale, and then print on the target device under the intended conditions.
