What cgi.fix_pathinfo controls
cgi.fix_pathinfo is a PHP CGI configuration directive, not an Nginx directive. The PHP manual defines it as providing real PATH_INFO and PATH_TRANSLATED support for the Common Gateway Interface. PHP classifies it as INI_SYSTEM, so an application cannot reliably change it with ini_set(); it belongs in the system configuration used by PHP-FPM.
The documented default is 1. With that value, PHP CGI attempts to adjust a requested path to conform to CGI path rules. With 0, PHP uses the older behavior. The practical choice depends on how Nginx maps URLs to scripts and whether an application deliberately relies on PATH_INFO.

| Value | Behavior | Typical Nginx/PHP-FPM decision |

Disables PHP’s CGI path-fixing behavior. | Preferred in the standard Nginx hardening procedure when Nginx performs explicit file checks. |
1 |
Enables path fixing to provide CGI-style PATH_INFO handling. |
Use only when the application needs that behavior and the complete request path has been tested. |
The value does not repair an incorrect FastCGI configuration. It cannot substitute for a correct document root, a valid SCRIPT_FILENAME, or an Nginx rule that refuses to send missing files to PHP-FPM.
Why Nginx administrators commonly set it to 0
In a typical Nginx setup, a request reaches a PHP location block and is passed to PHP-FPM over FastCGI. If the block does not verify that the script exists, a crafted URL can cause Nginx to send a nonexistent script path to FPM. PHP may then use path information to locate another script, depending on the request and configuration. The PHP Nginx installation guide recommends setting cgi.fix_pathinfo=0 as part of preventing this class of misrouting and possible script injection.
Use the safer value together with explicit Nginx checks. A secure request path should satisfy all of these conditions:
- Nginx passes only requests that resolve to an intended PHP file.
SCRIPT_FILENAMEis built from the correct document root and requested script name.- The FPM socket or TCP listener is not exposed to untrusted clients.
- Applications that need path-info routing are tested after the change.
Setting the directive to zero is not a blanket guarantee. An attacker who can reach an unprotected FastCGI endpoint may still influence request parameters, and a wrong document root can still execute an unintended file. Treat the directive, Nginx routing, and FPM network boundary as separate controls that must all be correct.
Find the php.ini used by PHP-FPM
There is no universal location. PHP installations can have separate configuration files for the command-line SAPI, Apache, and FPM. Editing the file reported by php --ini may change only CLI PHP and leave the web runtime untouched.
Identify the PHP-FPM version and service
Start by finding the process or service that serves the Nginx virtual host. On systemd distributions, list likely FPM units:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
systemctl list-units --type=service | grep -i fpm
systemctl list-unit-files | grep -i fpm
Then inspect the candidate unit:
systemctl status php8.2-fpm.service
Replace php8.2-fpm.service with the unit installed on your host. Other common names include php8.1-fpm, php8.3-fpm, and a generic php-fpm. The Nginx virtual host may reveal the version through its socket path, such as /run/php/php8.2-fpm.sock.
Do not infer the active version solely from the PHP version shown by a shell command. A host can have several versions installed simultaneously, and each can have separate pools, sockets, and configuration trees. Follow the fastcgi_pass value in the specific server block, then map that endpoint to the corresponding FPM unit.
If the service name is unclear, inspect running processes:
ps -ef | grep '[p]hp-fpm'
ss -lx | grep php
These commands can show the master process, pool names, and Unix sockets. A TCP listener can be found with:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsss -ltnp | grep ':9000'
When more than one listener appears, record which virtual host uses each one. Restarting a different pool will not change the workers handling the request you are testing.

Use FPM diagnostics to report the loaded file
Many packages provide a versioned FPM binary that can print its configuration information:
php-fpm8.2 -i | grep -E 'Loaded Configuration File|cgi.fix_pathinfo'
php-fpm -i | grep -E 'Loaded Configuration File|cgi.fix_pathinfo'
Use the binary corresponding to the running service. If the command is unavailable, inspect the package’s FPM configuration directory and service definition, or use a temporary, access-controlled PHP diagnostic page served by the same Nginx virtual host. The result you need is the path shown as Loaded Configuration File for FPM and the effective value of cgi.fix_pathinfo.
A CLI command can still be useful for discovery, but it is only a clue:

php -i | grep -E 'Server API|Loaded Configuration File|cgi.fix_pathinfo'
If it reports Command Line Interface as the server API, it is not proof of what FPM uses. Confirm with the FPM binary or a protected page executed by the same pool.
Recognize common paths, but verify them
| Installation style | Common location or pattern | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Debian or Ubuntu package | /etc/php/<version>/fpm/php.ini |
The version directory must match the FPM service, for example /etc/php/8.2/fpm/php.ini. |
| Versioned distribution package | /etc/php/7.0/fpm/php.ini |
This is a documented example; newer packages use different versions. |
| Source installation | /usr/local/php/php.ini |
A source build may copy php.ini-development or php.ini-production into this location. |
| Other distributions | Often /etc/php.ini plus an FPM pool directory |
Package maintainers choose the layout; confirm it from the FPM binary or service. |
Do not edit a file merely because its name looks right. Multiple PHP versions can coexist, and Nginx may send requests to a different FPM socket than the one you inspected. Also check whether the package loads additional files from a directory such as conf.d; an included file can override a value that appears correct in the main file.
Set cgi.fix_pathinfo=0
-
Back up the active file reported by FPM:
sudo cp /etc/php/8.2/fpm/php.ini /etc/php/8.2/fpm/php.ini.backupSubstitute the path on your system. Preserve the owner and permissions if you create the backup in a production configuration directory.
-
Open it with an administrative editor:
sudo editor /etc/php/8.2/fpm/php.ini -
Search for
cgi.fix_pathinfo. If the line begins with a semicolon, remove the semicolon. Set one authoritative value:Recommended: Fix Windows Errors and Clear Junk Files in Minutes - Free Scan →Recommended: Update Every Outdated Driver on Your PC in One Scan - Free →Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.cgi.fix_pathinfo=0 -
Check for duplicate active definitions elsewhere in the file. The last setting read can win, making a second line confusing during later maintenance. Keep comments explaining that the setting belongs to the FPM SAPI and which PHP version the file serves.
-
Save the file without changing unrelated production settings. This directive is read by the PHP process; changing a CLI configuration file will not affect an already running FPM pool.
Whitespace around the equals sign is optional, so both cgi.fix_pathinfo=0 and cgi.fix_pathinfo = 0 are valid. Do not quote the value, add it to an Nginx configuration file, or place it in application code. Because it is an INI_SYSTEM directive, a per-request ini_set() call is not the right mechanism.

sudo systemctl restart php8.2-fpm.service
sudo systemctl status php8.2-fpm.service --no-pager
Use a reload only when you know your package and deployment support reloading the configuration without replacing workers:
sudo systemctl reload php8.2-fpm.service
A restart is the clearest way to ensure every worker reads the new value. If you also changed an Nginx FastCGI block, test and reload Nginx separately:
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
Never restart a guessed service name. A successful restart of PHP 8.1 does nothing for a virtual host connected to PHP 8.2. On systems without systemd, use the distribution’s FPM init script or service manager, but still verify that the master process has a new start time and that its workers belong to the intended pool.
If a restart fails, do not continue testing as though the new value is active. Read the unit status and FPM error log first. A syntax error in php.ini, a missing socket directory, or an invalid pool setting can leave Nginx talking to stopped workers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Verify the effective FPM value
Prefer an FPM-specific diagnostic
Run the versioned FPM diagnostic again after the restart:
php-fpm8.2 -i | grep -E 'Loaded Configuration File|cgi.fix_pathinfo'
If the output shows cgi.fix_pathinfo => 0 => 0, the binary is reading the desired value. The exact formatting differs by PHP version. Compare both the loaded-file path and the value; a correct value from an unrelated binary is not useful.
Use a temporary web check when binary output is inconclusive
Create a temporary file inside a protected administrative location, for example:
<?php
phpinfo();
Serve it only to an administrator, inspect the cgi.fix_pathinfo row and the loaded configuration path, then delete it immediately. A public phpinfo() page exposes build details and configuration data. Restrict access with an Nginx allowlist, an authentication layer, or a local-only binding while checking it.
Do not leave the file under a predictable name. Check the access log after deletion to ensure no cached or alternate copy remains, and clear any deployment artifact that might recreate it.
Test the real application path
Request a known PHP page through the same Nginx virtual host and confirm that it returns the expected status and content. Then test a nonexistent script and a route that intentionally uses path information, if your application has one. Review the Nginx access log, FPM log, and application log rather than relying on a browser’s generic error page.
Perform these checks with the same hostname, HTTPS listener, and authentication path used by customers. A default server block can point to another root or another FPM socket and produce a misleading result.

Make the Nginx FastCGI block agree with the setting
The exact configuration depends on your distribution and framework, but the important controls are visible in a conventional server block:
location ~ .php$ {
try_files $uri =404;
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php8.2-fpm.sock;
}
try_files $uri =404;prevents Nginx from forwarding a path that does not exist. Place it carefully if your framework uses a front controller; a blanket rule can break intentional routing.fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAMEmust point to the real file under the intended document root. If your configuration uses a different root, replace$document_rootwith that explicit path.fastcgi_passmust match the socket or trusted TCP endpoint configured in the FPM pool.- Pass only the extensions and locations your application requires. Do not create a broad fallback that sends arbitrary files to PHP.
The PHP core documentation recommends that scripts use SCRIPT_FILENAME rather than PATH_TRANSLATED. If an application depends on path-info semantics, document that dependency and test it with cgi.fix_pathinfo=0 before deciding that a value of 1 is necessary.
Front-controller frameworks need special care. A request such as /orders/42 may intentionally be rewritten to /index.php, which is a real file, even though the original URI is not. In that design, make the rewrite explicit and apply the existence check to the resulting script rather than removing checks from every PHP location. Test static files, direct PHP files, rewritten routes, and malformed paths separately.
Choose between 0 and 1
There is no universal compatibility answer. Evaluate the four dimensions below for the specific application and server.
| Decision axis | cgi.fix_pathinfo=0 |
cgi.fix_pathinfo=1 |
|---|---|---|
| Handling of nonexistent paths | Works with an Nginx existence check and avoids PHP’s path-fixing behavior. | Leaves PHP’s CGI path-fixing behavior enabled; an incomplete Nginx block deserves extra scrutiny. |
| Application compatibility | Usually suitable when routes map directly to real scripts or use a front controller. | May be required by legacy code that intentionally reads PATH_INFO or related CGI variables. |
| Configuration dependency | Still requires correct SCRIPT_FILENAME and a tested try_files rule. |
Does not correct a wrong document root or an exposed FPM listener. |
| Operational risk | Requires a service restart and regression testing of routes. | Requires the same operational checks, plus a clear reason to retain the more permissive behavior. |
For a new or normally routed Nginx deployment, start with 0, test the application, and keep that value if all required routes work. Keep 1 only when a tested application requirement justifies it; do not use it as a workaround for a broken location block.
Recommended Free Tools
Changing from 1 to 0 can expose an application assumption that was previously hidden. Look for code or framework settings that read PATH_INFO, split the URI after a script name, or depend on PATH_TRANSLATED. The core guidance favors SCRIPT_FILENAME; modern code should normally use that variable and explicit routing instead of relying on path fixing.
Protect the PHP-FPM listener
PHP-FPM’s manual warns that it must not be reachable from an untrusted network. A client that can open a FastCGI connection can influence request configuration, including auto_prepend_file, and may be able to execute arbitrary code.
Prefer a Unix socket for local Nginx
When Nginx and FPM share a host, configure the pool to listen on a Unix socket such as /run/php/php8.2-fpm.sock. Set ownership and mode so the Nginx worker can connect without granting access to unrelated users. After changing pool permissions, restart FPM and verify that Nginx no longer returns a 502 error.
The socket path in Nginx and the pool’s listen directive must be identical. If the directory is created at boot or by a package script, ensure it exists before FPM starts. A socket that disappears after a reboot usually indicates a service-order or runtime-directory problem rather than a cgi.fix_pathinfo problem.

Bind FPM to a private address, restrict the port with host and network firewalls, and allow only the intended Nginx host. Do not bind a production FPM listener to all interfaces merely to make remote connectivity convenient. Confirm exposure with ss -ltnp from the server and an approved network scan from your administration network.
Do not assume that a private address alone is sufficient. Review cloud security groups, container networks, host firewalls, and load-balancer rules. Log and periodically review which systems can reach the listener, especially after moving Nginx or FPM to separate hosts.

The value remains 1 after editing
- Check that you edited the FPM file, not the CLI file shown by
php --ini. - Confirm the Nginx virtual host uses the same PHP version and socket as the service you restarted.
- Search for duplicate active definitions and included configuration files.
- Restart the correct unit, then verify through FPM-specific output or a temporary protected diagnostic.
- Check that an automation tool or package update did not regenerate the file after your edit.

nginx -tafter every FastCGI configuration change. - Check whether FPM failed to start because of a malformed INI or pool directive.
Every PHP request becomes a 404
- Check the value of
rootfor the server or location block. - Compare the actual file path with the generated
SCRIPT_FILENAME. - Confirm that
try_files $uri =404;is not rejecting a framework’s front-controller route. If the framework needs a special routing rule, implement that rule explicitly rather than removing all existence checks. - Check whether a URI rewrite changes the script name before the PHP location runs.
PATH_INFO routes stop working
Some legacy applications expect a URL such as /index.php/account to populate path information. Test the route with 0, inspect the variables received by the application, and follow the framework’s documented Nginx configuration. If the application genuinely requires CGI path fixing, evaluate 1 in staging and compensate with strict script checks, correct SCRIPT_FILENAME, and a protected FPM listener.
The change appears intermittent
Multiple FPM pools or PHP versions may be serving different virtual hosts. Map each Nginx fastcgi_pass endpoint to its pool, inspect each pool’s master process, and verify configuration after a full restart. A rolling deployment can also leave old workers running temporarily; check the process list and service logs.
The diagnostic page shows a different file than expected
Verify the hostname and server block selected by Nginx, then check the pool socket and FPM process command line. A default virtual host, a reverse proxy, or a container boundary can send the request to another PHP installation. Remove the diagnostic page once the endpoint is identified and protected.
Production checklist
- Identify the PHP-FPM service and binary serving the Nginx virtual host.
- Confirm the FPM SAPI’s loaded
php.inipath rather than assuming the CLI path. - Set one active
cgi.fix_pathinfo=0line and retain a backup. - Restart the matching FPM service and check its status.
- Verify the effective value through FPM diagnostics or a temporary protected endpoint.
- Test normal PHP pages, nonexistent scripts, and any intentional path-info routes.
- Ensure Nginx checks file existence and sets
SCRIPT_FILENAMEto the intended document root. - Run
nginx -tbefore reloading Nginx. - Keep FPM on a Unix socket or restrict its TCP listener to trusted hosts.
- Remove diagnostic files and review logs after testing.
Optional operational help
If maintaining PHP versions, FPM pools, sockets, firewalls, and Nginx rules is outside your team’s normal work, a managed PHP hosting plan or an Nginx VPS with provider-maintained updates can reduce operational overhead. For an existing server, server security monitoring or a PHP security audit can help identify exposed FastCGI listeners, unsafe location blocks, and configuration drift. These services do not replace verifying the active FPM configuration yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is cgi.fix_pathinfo in php.ini?
There is no single universal path. Find the php.ini loaded by the FPM SAPI, commonly under /etc/php/<version>/fpm/php.ini on Debian or Ubuntu, or /etc/php.ini on some other distributions. A source installation may use /usr/local/php/php.ini. Confirm the path with the matching FPM binary or a protected diagnostic page rather than relying only on php --ini.
Should cgi.fix_pathinfo be 0 or 1 with Nginx?
Use 0 for the standard Nginx hardening configuration, together with try_files, a correct SCRIPT_FILENAME, and a protected FPM listener. Keep 1 only if a tested application genuinely requires CGI-style PATH_INFO behavior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I restart PHP-FPM after changing php.ini?
Restart the exact service connected to the Nginx virtual host, for example sudo systemctl restart php8.2-fpm.service, then check its status. Substitute your installed version and service name. Reload Nginx separately only if you changed its configuration.
Why does Nginx pass a nonexistent PHP file to PHP-FPM?
The PHP location may lack an existence check such as try_files $uri =404;, or a rewrite may produce an unintended script path. Check the location block, document root, and generated SCRIPT_FILENAME. Setting cgi.fix_pathinfo=0 helps prevent path-fixing behavior but does not correct broken routing.
Can I set cgi.fix_pathinfo with ini_set()?
No. PHP classifies it as INI_SYSTEM. Set it in the system configuration used by PHP-FPM and restart or reload the matching service so workers read the new value.
Is it safe to expose PHP-FPM on port 9000?
Not to an untrusted network. PHP-FPM warns that a client with FastCGI access can influence request settings, including auto_prepend_file, and potentially execute code. Prefer a Unix socket for local Nginx, or bind TCP to a private address and restrict it with firewalls.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does php –ini show the wrong configuration file?
The php command normally reports the CLI SAPI. CLI, Apache, and FPM can load different files. Use the versioned FPM binary, inspect the FPM service, or check a temporary protected page served through the same Nginx virtual host.
Will setting the value to 0 break my framework?
It can affect legacy routes that intentionally depend on PATH_INFO or PATH_TRANSLATED. Test direct scripts, front-controller routes, and path-info URLs in staging. If the framework truly needs CGI path fixing, document that requirement and use strict Nginx checks and a protected FPM listener.
The Bottom Line
Find the php.ini loaded by the PHP-FPM SAPI that serves your Nginx site, set cgi.fix_pathinfo=0, restart the matching FPM service, and verify the effective value. Keep Nginx’s SCRIPT_FILENAME and file-existence checks correct, test any PATH_INFO-dependent routes, and never expose FPM to an untrusted network.
