Craft a bow with three sticks and three string, keep arrows in your inventory, and draw the bow fully before releasing. For a strong survival setup, build toward Power V, Unbreaking III, Flame, Punch II, and either Infinity or Mending. The last choice depends on whether you value ordinary-arrow economy or XP-based repairs and tipped-arrow use.

Collect sticks from wooden planks and string from sources such as spiders, cobwebs, or loot. The recipe produces one bow. A bow occupies the weapon slot and fires arrows from your inventory; it does not create ammunition by itself.
Which arrows should you carry?
Ordinary arrows are the practical default for exploration, hostile mobs, and routine ranged combat. Tipped arrows add status effects when your world and supplies support them, but their special effects make them a different ammunition choice rather than a simple damage upgrade. Plan the bow enchantment around the ammunition you actually intend to use.

How to fire and manage a bow
- Put the bow in your hotbar and keep compatible arrows in your inventory.
- Select the bow, then hold the use button to draw it. A longer draw produces a stronger shot.
- Release when the crosshair is over the target. Lead moving targets and compensate for projectile drop at longer distances.
- After firing, switch to another item or continue drawing for the next shot as the situation requires.
Bows are most useful when you can create distance: fight from a wall, tower, ledge, or open area where enemies cannot immediately reach you. Close-range attacks, shields, terrain, and weather can all change the time available for a shot, so a bow should complement rather than replace your melee weapon.
Bow enchantments explained
| Enchantment | Maximum level | What it does | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | V | Increases the damage dealt by arrows. | The core damage enchantment for a combat bow. |
| Punch | II | Increases arrow knockback. | Creates space, but can push a target away from your next hit or from a teammate. |
| Flame | I | Sets targets struck by arrows on fire. | Useful for adding fire damage and visual confirmation of a hit. |
| Unbreaking | III | Reduces the chance that firing consumes durability. | Extends the time between repairs; it does not make the bow indestructible. |
| Infinity | I | Prevents ordinary arrows from being consumed when you fire, provided at least one ordinary arrow remains in your inventory. | Does not apply to tipped arrows. |
| Mending | I | Repairs the bow when you gain experience orbs. | Turns experience collection into maintenance instead of requiring replacement bows. |
| Curse of Vanishing | I | Makes the bow disappear when you die under the curse’s documented conditions. | Usually undesirable on a survival bow because the item cannot be recovered after the relevant death. |
Power: the damage choice
Power raises arrow damage and can be applied through level V. It does not change the bow into a hitscan weapon or remove the need to draw and aim. If your goal is to defeat enemies with fewer shots, Power is the first offensive enchantment to prioritize.
Punch: control rather than raw damage
Punch increases knockback, up to level II. The extra separation is valuable against creepers, zombies, or any opponent that becomes dangerous at melee range. It can be counterproductive when you need an enemy to stay in a particular position, when knockback pushes a target out of follow-up range, or when a coordinated team is trying to focus one target. Treat Punch as a play-style decision, not a mandatory damage upgrade.
Rank #2
Flame: fire on hit
Flame has only level I and ignites targets hit by the arrow. It is useful for applying fire during an opening attack and for making successful hits easy to see. Fire can also interact with the environment and with a target’s own protections, so do not assume every situation benefits from setting an enemy alight.
Unbreaking: preserving durability
Unbreaking III is the highest level and reduces durability consumption while the bow is used. It improves the bow’s working life but does not repair existing damage. Pair it with Mending if you want experience orbs to restore durability, or plan conventional repairs and replacement bows if you choose another final enchantment.
Infinity or Mending: which should you choose?
Infinity and Mending are mutually exclusive in normal survival enchanting. You must choose one path for a conventional end-game bow; ordinary enchanting and anvil combinations will not put both on the same item.
Choose Infinity when arrows are the limiting resource
Infinity is the efficient option for a bow that fires ordinary arrows during long expeditions, mob farms, or repeated defensive fights. Keep at least one ordinary arrow in your inventory so the bow can fire. The enchantment preserves those regular arrows, but it does not preserve tipped arrows, so a tipped-arrow loadout does not receive the same ammunition benefit.
Choose Mending when experience and flexibility matter more
Mending repairs the bow as you collect experience orbs. It is the better fit when you regularly visit XP farms, mine for experience, or want to rely on tipped arrows. Because Mending works on the item rather than on one particular arrow type, it avoids Infinity’s restriction on tipped ammunition. Its trade-off is that you must keep gaining XP to restore durability and still need a supply of arrows.
A quick decision test
- Select Infinity if most shots use ordinary arrows and carrying or crafting more ammunition is inconvenient.
- Select Mending if you use tipped arrows, have a dependable XP source, or prefer repairable equipment over ammunition conservation.
- Do not plan around having both through normal survival enchanting; make the choice before spending rare books or high experience costs.
The strongest practical bow build
A broadly useful high-end target is Power V, Unbreaking III, Flame, Punch II, and either Infinity or Mending. This combination covers the four decisions that matter most in play: damage, durability, ammunition economy, and knockback control.
Rank #4
| Build priority | What to maximize | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Damage | Power V | Players who want each successful hit to do as much damage as the bow’s enchantments allow. |
| Durability | Unbreaking III, with Mending when selected | Long-term equipment that is maintained through use and XP. |
| Ammunition economy | Infinity plus ordinary arrows | Exploration and routine combat where conserving standard arrows is the priority. |
| Knockback control | Punch II, or no Punch if displacement is disruptive | Players who deliberately use distance, or who need targets to remain in place. |
| Status effects | Flame and tipped arrows as appropriate | Situations where fire or another arrow-delivered effect matters more than maximum ammunition efficiency. |
There is no single best choice for every world. A player defending a base from ordinary mobs may prefer Infinity and Punch, while a player carrying specialized tipped arrows and visiting an XP source may gain more from Mending and a carefully chosen firing position.

Using an enchanting table
- Place the bow in an enchanting table and provide the required experience levels and lapis lazuli.
- Review the offered enchantment before committing. The table’s result is random within the available options, so several attempts may be needed.
- Repeat with books or additional bows when you need a specific enchantment that is not offered directly.
Enchanted books are useful when you want to control the final list more precisely. They let you collect Power, Unbreaking, Flame, Punch, Infinity, or Mending separately and apply compatible books to the bow in an anvil.
Combining books and bows in an anvil
- Put the target bow in the first anvil slot.
- Put a compatible enchanted book or second bow in the other slot.
- Check the preview for the resulting enchantments and the displayed level cost.
- Confirm only when the result contains the levels and final enchantment choice you want.
Equal-level copies combine into the next level, up to each enchantment’s survival maximum: for example, two level-IV Power books can produce Power V. Incompatible enchantments remain blocked; Infinity and Mending cannot normally be joined this way. An anvil-ordering guide gives a worked example totaling 29 levels for one Infinity-or-Mending bow path, but that figure is an example of one arrangement, not a universal cost for every player’s items and order.

Do enchantments make arrows fly farther?
No. Bow enchantments do not increase arrow speed or travel distance. Power changes the damage result, Punch changes knockback, Flame adds fire, and the durability and ammunition enchantments change how often the bow can be used; none removes projectile gravity or turns the shot into a faster projectile.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to improve practical range
- Draw fully before releasing when you have time.
- Aim above distant targets to account for the arrow’s arc rather than aiming directly at their center.
- Lead moving targets according to their direction and speed.
- Use elevated ground or a clear line of sight so terrain does not intercept the projectile.
- Fire a test shot when judging a new distance instead of assuming an enchantment changed the trajectory.
These techniques improve hit probability without claiming a numerical range increase that the enchantments do not provide.
Common mistakes and fixes
The bow will not fire
Check that at least one usable arrow is in your inventory. Infinity still requires one ordinary arrow as the firing prerequisite, and it does not convert a tipped arrow into an Infinity-compatible projectile. Also verify that you selected the bow and are holding the use button long enough to draw it.
The bow breaks during an expedition
Unbreaking reduces durability consumption but does not restore a damaged item. Carry a backup bow, return to an anvil for a conventional repair, or use Mending and collect experience orbs. If the bow carries Curse of Vanishing, dying can remove it instead of leaving it for recovery, so avoid relying on that item as your only weapon.
Enemies are knocked too far away
Replace Punch II with a bow that omits Punch, or keep a second bow for situations where controlled positioning matters. Punch is excellent for creating space but can lengthen a fight when every follow-up shot requires reacquiring the target.
Tipped arrows are being consumed despite Infinity
This is expected behavior. Infinity preserves regular arrows only. Use Mending for a tipped-arrow-focused bow, or reserve Infinity for ordinary ammunition and carry a separate strategy for status effects.
Quick Recap
A practical preparation checklist
- Bow crafted from three sticks and three string.
- Enough ordinary arrows for the trip, including at least one when using Infinity.
- Power V as the main damage goal.
- Unbreaking III for durability.
- Flame I if fire-on-hit is useful in your fights.
- Punch II only if knockback supports your positioning.
- Infinity for ordinary-arrow conservation or Mending for XP repairs and tipped arrows.
- A backup weapon and a plan for repairs before entering a dangerous area.
