Start with a supervised shift and review how it went. There is no reliable cross-platform pay benchmark, so agree on compensation directly rather than treating one marketplace listing as a standard rate.
What a livestream moderator does
A moderator helps manage live chat so the creator can focus on the broadcast. Depending on the community and agreement, that can include removing spam or abusive messages, enforcing rules, welcoming viewers, answering routine questions, and coordinating with other moderators. The role is not identical on every channel: define its scope with the creator before recruiting.

YouTube describes a moderator as “someone who you trust to help build a positive, safe channel experience for your community.” Trust matters because moderators make decisions in real time, often when the creator is busy or unable to respond.

How to find a livestream moderator
Write a clear role brief
Before asking for candidates, write down what the role involves. Include:

- Platform or platforms and the channel or community to be covered.
- Broadcast schedule, time zone, expected frequency, and likely chat pace.
- Audience languages and relevant cultural context.
- Whether the role is paid or volunteer, and the expected scope of work.
- Tasks such as welcoming viewers, answering FAQs, enforcing rules, handling raids, or coordinating other moderators.
- Which actions the moderator can take independently and which require contacting the creator first.
Aligning expectations is especially important if the role is on Twitch. Twitch recommends selecting reliable people and agreeing on what the creator and moderators expect of one another. TikTok’s safety guidance likewise recommends discussing expectations and enabling appropriate permissions before a moderator takes the role.
Recruit through trusted, relevant channels
For a small community, consider a regular viewer or someone whose judgment you have already seen. For a larger channel, active community members and people comfortable coordinating with a moderation team may be relevant. These are possibilities, not a universal formula: a 2023 study by Joseph Seering and Sanjay R. Kairam surveyed 1,053 active adult moderators in the United States on Twitch and found differences between smaller and larger channels in recruitment, prior relationships, onboarding, and motivations. The study is specific to Twitch and its respondents; it does not establish a rule for every platform or community.
Other routes include referrals from trusted creators, specialist creator communities, and paid marketplaces. Modwork describes itself as a marketplace for paid moderation sessions, with search filters for platform, language, time zone, and availability. It also describes session history, reviews, and escrow payments. Those are the provider’s own descriptions, so review its current listings and terms directly before relying on them.

How to assess candidates
Ask about experience and availability
Ask candidates which platforms they have moderated, what tools they know, which hours they can reliably cover, and what languages they can moderate. Request references or examples of past moderation work if appropriate. Check that their availability actually matches the schedule in the role brief.
Use realistic scenarios
Ask candidates to talk through how they would handle situations such as:
- A sudden burst of spam or an apparent raid.
- Harassment or repeated rule violations.
- A borderline joke that may or may not violate the written rules.
- A situation where the creator is not responding.
Look for calm, proportionate decisions, consistent application of rules, clear communication, and good judgment about when to escalate. These scenario questions are practical screening suggestions, not a validated assessment test. A candidate should be able to explain not just what action they would take, but how they would decide whether to warn, time out, ban, report, or ask the creator.

Compare candidates against the actual role
When you have multiple candidates, compare them on the needs of this channel rather than on a generic idea of a “good moderator.” A 2023 study found that moderators’ self-described roles corresponded with differences in the tasks they performed, and that enforcement and coordination tasks became more common as channels grew. That supports matching the hire to the actual work, not assuming every moderator has the same duties.

- Language and cultural fit for the audience.
- Communication and escalation habits.
- References, prior work, session history, or review evidence where available.
- Willingness to accept the role’s scope and compensation.
Agree on rules and run a trial shift
Before the first shift, put operating expectations in writing. Cover the channel’s rules and tone, prohibited content, when to warn or time out, what merits a ban or report, how to contact the creator, privacy expectations, shift coverage, and what to do when a case is uncertain. A supervised first stream or trial shift gives both sides a chance to check that the arrangement works.
Scale onboarding to the role: a moderator covering one small channel may need a different orientation from someone coordinating multiple moderators in a fast-moving chat. The Twitch study found onboarding patterns varied with channel size; it does not imply that every channel needs the same process.

Grant only the platform permissions needed
Platform roles and controls differ, and interface labels or availability can change. Check the platform’s current official instructions before assigning access, and avoid giving broader permissions than the role requires.
YouTube Live
YouTube lets a creator assign a person as a standard or managing moderator. Its help guidance describes moderation controls that include blocked words, holding potentially inappropriate messages, slow mode, deleting messages, timing users out, and hiding users. TikTok LIVE lets creators assign moderators and configure comment permissions. Its materials describe tools to mute, block, filter, report, and pin comments; some controls depend on the permissions the creator grants. TikTok LIVE Studio help also explains adding moderators from LIVE chat and removing them in moderator settings. Twitch
Twitch provides channel moderator roles and moderation settings, including follower verification and chat restrictions. Its guidance recommends reliable human moderators and notes that automation is not fully accurate; bots can complement people, but should not be treated as a complete substitute. What does a livestream moderator cost?
No reliable cross-platform moderator pay range is established here. Rates depend on the scope, schedule, platform, language, and whether the arrangement is volunteer or paid. Modwork’s page displays an example profile with a listed hourly rate and says it charges a 12% fee on completed bookings; those are marketplace details, not an independent market benchmark. Check the current listing and terms directly, then agree in advance on duties, hours, payment, and cancellation expectations.
Review the first shifts
After the trial, have a short, specific review with the moderator. Discuss decisions that went well, cases where the rules were unclear, handoffs or missed coverage, and any permissions that should be adjusted. Update the written brief when the work changes, and revisit access when someone stops moderating.

Human moderation remains important even when a platform offers automation. Twitch’s official guidance says, “It is impossible for a bot or an automated system to catch everything or to be 100% accurate.” Automated filters and bots can reduce routine workload, but a trusted person is still needed for judgment and context.
