How to Improve Mic Quality in Streamlabs Desktop

Select the right mic, set clean levels, tune only the filters you need, and monitor the result to improve voice clarity in Streamlabs Desktop.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To improve mic quality in Streamlabs Desktop, first select the correct microphone and set its level so normal speech peaks in the mixer’s yellow area, not red. Then add only the filters that address what you hear—noise suppression for steady background noise, a gate or expander for sound between words, and compression for uneven volume—and monitor after each change. Room noise and echo are best addressed at the source, before adding more processing.

1. Select the right microphone and set its level

  1. In Streamlabs Desktop, check the Mic/Auxiliary Device control and select the microphone you intend to use. Confirm you have not selected a webcam microphone or another unintended input.
  2. Speak at your usual streaming volume and watch the mixer meter. Streamlabs recommends peaks in the yellow section and warns that red can sound distorted. Its guide does not specify a calibrated numeric target, so use the meter and your ears rather than translating its color guidance into a made-up dBFS value. Streamlabs’ mic-quality guide
  3. If desktop audio masks your voice, lower the desktop-audio level rather than raising the microphone indiscriminately. Increasing mic gain can also make room noise more audible.

2. Choose filters by the sound you want to fix

In the mixer, open the microphone’s filter controls and add a filter only when it addresses a specific audible problem. Names and available options can vary by Streamlabs Desktop version. Change one control at a time, then listen to speech, pauses, and louder words.

Noise suppression: steady fan or air-conditioning noise

Noise suppression is intended for persistent background sounds such as fans or air conditioning. Streamlabs’ guide notes that the filter may default to -30, which can be too strong and affect the voice; it recommends beginning at 0 and monitoring while adjusting until the unwanted noise is no longer picked up. Treat 0 as the guide’s starting recommendation, not a guaranteed ideal setting. Too much suppression can make a voice sound unnatural, so use only as much as needed. Streamlabs mic-quality guide

Noise gate: sound between phrases

A noise gate reduces or blocks quieter input when you are not speaking. Its open threshold determines when the mic opens; its close threshold determines when it closes. Streamlabs gives -26 dB as an example threshold and suggests setting the close threshold about 5 dB below the open threshold, while emphasizing that the right settings vary by person. These are examples, not universal presets. If word endings disappear or the gate sounds abrupt, adjust the thresholds and timing or use an expander instead.

Expander: quieter background without a hard cutoff

An expander makes signals below a threshold quieter rather than treating them as a simple open-or-closed gate. Streamlabs’ guide provides suggested attack timing of 5–10 ms and release timing of 50–120 ms; these are starting suggestions, not validated settings for every mic or voice. Listen for clipped syllables and unnatural changes between speech and silence, and adjust accordingly.

Compressor: uneven speech volume

A compressor reduces the level above its threshold, which can make loud and quiet phrases more consistent. Output gain can restore average presence after compression, but avoid turning it up so far that room noise becomes prominent. Sidechain compression can also lower desktop audio while you speak. Compression cannot repair clipping that already occurred at the microphone or interface.

Limiter: peaks that are too high

A limiter caps output at its configured threshold and can help prevent peaks from clipping in the processed signal. It is not a substitute for setting the microphone or interface level correctly, and it cannot undo distortion already recorded at the input.

Gain and polarity: use only when they solve a real problem

Gain changes level, not the quality of the original signal; adding too much may bring up background noise along with your voice. Streamlabs lists Invert Polarity mainly for advanced setups addressing phase issues with multiple microphones, not as a routine first filter for one mic. Streamlabs’ live-stream audio guide

3. Monitor the processed microphone

  1. Open the microphone’s advanced audio settings and set Audio Monitoring to Monitor Only to hear the processed mic, as Streamlabs recommends.
  2. Make one adjustment, then listen at normal speaking volume. Check a quiet phrase, a pause, a word ending, and a louder phrase.
  3. If the voice sounds thin, robotic, clipped, or abruptly cut off, undo or reduce the last change before adjusting another filter.

Monitoring lets you judge the processed sound directly instead of relying only on the meter. Keep the final result natural and intelligible rather than stacking filters by default. Streamlabs mic-quality guide

4. Improve the room and microphone position

  • Move the mic away from loud fans and air-conditioning equipment, and reduce avoidable noise in the room.
  • Soft furnishings such as rugs and curtains can reduce reflections and echo. A filter may reduce some noise, but it cannot make a reverberant room behave like a quiet, treated one.
  • If the microphone offers pickup patterns, a cardioid pattern may help when it suits your setup and speaking position.
  • Mechanical keyboard noise may remain audible even with suppression; a gate can reduce it between phrases, but aggressive settings may also cut off speech.

Streamlabs notes that even a good microphone cannot fully compensate for a noisy or echoey environment. Streamlabs’ live-stream audio guide

5. Consider another mic or noise-removal route only if needed

A USB microphone is generally the simpler plug-and-play option for beginners. An XLR microphone requires an audio interface or mixer. Changing microphones alone is not established as a fix for room echo or persistent background noise, so first check placement, environment, input selection, and filter tuning. Streamlabs’ guides do not compare or test specific microphone models.

Check the current interface and listen to the result rather than assuming a preset fits your voice or room. Streamlabs Chat Support guide

Troubleshooting common mic problems

What you hear Likely cause What to try
Voice distorts or sounds harsh on loud words The input or processed level is too high, or the meter reaches red. Lower the mic or interface level until normal speech peaks in yellow. A limiter can cap output peaks, but cannot repair clipping that already happened at the input.
Fan or air-conditioning noise stays audible The noise is persistent, or suppression is too light. Move the mic away from the noise source, then add or adjust suppression gradually while monitoring. Streamlabs recommends starting at 0 rather than assuming the example default of -30 is appropriate.
Keyboard or room noise is heard between phrases The mic picks up quieter sounds while you are not speaking. Try a gate or expander and adjust its thresholds so it reduces pauses without chopping word endings. Mechanical keyboard noise may still be audible.
Words lose their first or last sounds A gate closes too quickly or its thresholds are too aggressive. Adjust the open and close thresholds and timing; if the result remains abrupt, try an expander or reduce the gate’s effect.
Voice sounds robotic or unnatural Noise suppression may be too strong. Reduce suppression and compare the monitored signal with the filter disabled.
Voice is hard to understand under game or desktop sound Competing desktop audio is too loud. Lower desktop audio. If appropriate, use sidechain compression so desktop sound reduces while you speak.
Voice sounds echoey Room reflections are prominent. Try a quieter position and soft furnishings such as rugs or curtains; do not expect a mic filter to fully correct room echo.
