How to Find and Explore Ice Caves in Minecraft (2026)

Minecraft’s 2026 experimental builds add underground Ice Caves beneath colder Overworld biomes. Learn the visual clues, risks and test-build access routes.

In the 2026 experimental Minecraft builds, Ice Caves are underground Overworld biomes that can generate beneath colder surface biomes. Explore below cold regions and look for Packed Ice, Calcite, Icicles and occasional Ice Crystals—but there is no published guaranteed coordinate, frequency or seed-independent way to find one. The feature is described in Java snapshots and Bedrock Preview testing; the official sources reviewed do not confirm it in a stable release.

Are Ice Caves in Minecraft yet?

As of October 7, 2026, Mojang has documented Ice Caves in experimental builds, not established them as part of a stable release. The Minecraft Java Team’s 26.4 Snapshot 3 notes, dated October 6, 2026, introduce the biome and related features. Mojang’s Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 notes, dated September 30, 2026, list Ice Caves among experimental features for an upcoming 2026 drop. Details may change as testing continues.

To explore, you need a test build that includes the feature. The correct route depends on your edition, platform and available build; finding an Ice Cave is not guaranteed even when the feature is enabled.

How to access the Ice Cave feature

Edition Test route What to check
Java Edition Install a current snapshot through the Minecraft Launcher. Mojang’s Snapshot 3 instructions say to enable snapshots in the Launcher’s Installations tab. Confirm the snapshot includes Ice Caves and use a separate test world.
Bedrock Edition Use the Preview/Beta testing route described in Mojang’s guide to testing Minecraft snapshots and previews. Check the changelog for your matching Preview build and platform; availability can differ.

Test versions can be unstable and may corrupt worlds. Mojang’s testing guide recommends caution, and its Java feature-toggle guidance warns that worlds created with feature toggles may not be upgradeable to later snapshots or releases. Back up important saves and create a separate world for testing.

Where do Ice Caves spawn?

The Java notes say Ice Caves can generate beneath colder Overworld biomes; the Bedrock Preview notes describe them as appearing under biomes with low temperature. Start by exploring underground beneath cold surface regions. This is a search strategy, not a guarantee: Mojang’s reviewed notes do not give exact coordinates, biome frequency or a universal locator.

Do not mistake the surface Ice Spikes biome for an Ice Cave. Ice Spikes is a separate snowy surface biome whose packed-ice formations can extend underground; its presence does not establish that an Ice Cave lies below.

How to recognize an Ice Cave

Look for a cave dominated by Packed Ice and Calcite, with hanging Icicles and large Packed Ice Icicles on floors or ceilings. You may also see patches of snow, ore pockets in Stone and Deepslate, and occasional Ice Crystals. In the Bedrock Preview notes, Dirt and Granite do not generate in the biome, and Glow Lichen is absent.

Ice Crystals emit light. The Bedrock notes describe them as the only light source found in Ice Caves because Glow Lichen does not generate there, so do not expect the biome to be lit like a typical cave.

Hazards and mobs to watch for

  • Falling Icicles: Java Snapshot 3 notes say falling Icicles damage entities and deal extra damage to entities that land on them. Pointed Icicles break when exposed to nearby light sources, according to the same notes.
  • Frostbites: These mobs can spawn alongside the cave mobs that normally appear. Their melee attacks apply the Freezing effect, and they can throw Ice Balls.
  • Strays: The notes list Strays among the mobs that can spawn in Ice Caves.

Because spawning, terrain and behavior are experimental, treat these details as descriptions of the cited test builds rather than promises about a later release.

What is not known about finding one

The official notes reviewed do not state how common Ice Caves are, provide coordinates, or identify a seed-independent method that always works. They also do not establish when—or whether—the feature will reach a stable release in its current form. If a search fails, that does not by itself indicate a problem with your world: a cold surface biome is only a place to begin exploring, not proof an Ice Cave generated beneath it.
