You can’t install macOS apps directly on a Chromebook. To do the same work, use a web or ChromeOS-compatible app, or connect remotely to a Mac that runs the software. You can access iCloud Drive in a browser, transfer files through cloud storage, or use an external drive with a Chromebook-supported format.
Can you install Mac apps on a Chromebook?
No documented ChromeOS workflow installs macOS applications directly. Google describes Chromebooks as using web apps rather than software programs made for other computers. A Mac app does not become compatible simply because it also has a web version or uses Chrome.

- For an Android app: check whether your Chromebook supports Google Play and whether the app is available for your device.
- For development tools: check whether your Chromebook supports the Linux development environment. A school or work administrator may disable it, and Linux has hardware limitations, including support for cameras and hardware acceleration.
- For an app that must run on macOS: use Chrome Remote Desktop to connect to a separately configured Mac.
Google’s Switch to a Chromebook guide describes web apps as the Chromebook’s standard alternative to software used on other computers. Android and Linux availability depends on the Chromebook and, in managed settings, administrator policy. Check the exact app and device before relying on either option.

How to use a Mac-only app remotely
Chrome Remote Desktop lets you access another computer’s applications and files. The app still runs on the Mac; remote access does not install or convert it for ChromeOS. You need a Mac that is available and set up for remote access.
- On the Mac, follow Google’s instructions to set up Chrome Remote Desktop and enable remote access.
- On the Chromebook, open Chrome Remote Desktop and connect to that Mac using the account and access details configured during setup.
- Use the Mac’s desktop remotely to work in the application or reach files stored there.
Follow the current setup and connection steps in Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop instructions. Remote access depends on the Mac being available and the connection working; it is not a way to use the application when no configured Mac exists.

How to open iCloud Drive on a Chromebook
Use iCloud.com in Chrome to access iCloud Drive. This is browser access to your files, not a documented way to add a fully synchronized iCloud Drive folder to the Chromebook Files app or copy all Mac data locally.
- Open Chrome and go to iCloud.com.
- Sign in with the Apple Account associated with your iCloud files.
- Open Drive, then use the web interface to view, upload, download, organize, share, or delete files.
Apple notes that iCloud web features can vary. Check Apple’s iCloud Drive instructions and web-only iCloud access requirements if a particular feature or account workflow matters.

How to transfer files with an external drive
A USB drive can move files directly between a Mac and Chromebook, provided the drive and its file system are compatible. Google lists FAT, FAT32, and exFAT as supported file systems; journaled HFS+ is read-only on Chromebooks.
- Check the drive’s format on the Mac before copying files. If you need the Chromebook to write to it, don’t rely on journaled HFS+.
- Use a drive formatted as exFAT, FAT, or FAT32 for a format Google lists as supported.
- Connect the drive to the Chromebook and open the Files app to access it.
- Copy files between the drive and Chromebook, then eject the drive safely before disconnecting it.
See Google’s supported file types and external devices for compatibility details. A suitable external drive is optional: cloud transfer is another route, and a port or device compatibility issue can still prevent a particular drive from working.

How to move files through cloud storage
Cloud storage avoids a physical transfer, but it requires network access and appropriate account permissions. Google identifies Google Drive, Box, and SMB among Chromebook cloud-file options. You can also upload files to Google Drive from the Mac, then access them on the Chromebook.
- On the Mac, upload or copy the files to a cloud service both devices can access, such as Google Drive.
- On the Chromebook, sign in to the same service and open the files you need.
- Download files to the Chromebook if you need local copies, or work with them in the service where the file type and app allow it.
Google’s external-device and cloud-file guidance covers supported options; its Chromebook switching guide also describes moving files with Google Drive.

Can you edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files?
Yes. Google documents two cloud-based routes: Microsoft 365 connected to OneDrive, or Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connected to Google Drive. These documented editing workflows require cloud storage and are not available offline.
- Use Microsoft 365 with OneDrive if you want to work in Microsoft’s apps and keep files in OneDrive.
- Use Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides with Google Drive if those editors suit your file and workflow.
For current steps and supported file workflows, see Google’s instructions for opening and editing Office files on a Chromebook.

| What you need | Documented route | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Run a Mac-only application | Chrome Remote Desktop to a configured Mac | You need a separate Mac set up for remote access. |
| Do similar work without macOS | Web or ChromeOS-compatible app; Android app where supported; Linux environment where available | Compatibility depends on the app, Chromebook, and administrator policy. |
| Open iCloud files | Sign in at iCloud.com and open iCloud Drive | Features can vary; browser access does not establish local synchronization. |
| Transfer files directly | External drive formatted as exFAT, FAT, or FAT32 | Journaled HFS+ is read-only; device and port compatibility matter. |
| Transfer without a drive | Google Drive or another supported cloud-file option | Requires network access, an account, and suitable permissions. |
