How to Find and Check Copilot Sources in Word

Copilot in Word can point to document passages behind answers and drafts. Learn how to request references and check that each one supports the claim.

Copilot in Word can show references to parts of the document it used to answer a question, and you can ask it to draft new content with citations to referenced material. To use those references well, ask a focused question or identify the source file, open the citations Copilot provides, and confirm that each cited passage supports the generated claim.

What Copilot citations in Word mean

When Copilot answers a question about the open Word document, it can show references to where it pulled information from in that document. Microsoft says those references can link to the relevant part of the file. You can also ask Copilot to draft content with citations to referenced sources, including a specific file when that option is available. See Microsoft’s Word document chat guidance and drafting guidance.

These are traceability aids: they help you locate material associated with a response. They do not prove that a generated statement is correct, and Microsoft’s support pages do not promise citations for every answer or fully describe how Copilot selects sources.

Copilot references are also different from Word’s traditional citation manager. The References-tab workflow uses source details you enter to create formatted citations and bibliographies; Copilot references point to material used in a generated answer or draft.

Check that Copilot is available

Open a document in Word and look for the Copilot control or chat pane. Availability can depend on an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription or Copilot license, organization settings, app version, platform, and rollout. Microsoft’s instructions cover Word for Microsoft 365, but the precise experience can vary across Word for Windows, Mac, the web, and iPad. If Copilot is missing, check which account is signed in, whether its license includes Copilot, and whether your organization allows the feature. Microsoft outlines access and platform qualifications in its chat guidance and draft guidance.

Ask about a document and inspect its references

  1. Open the file in Word. Use the document that contains the material you want Copilot to examine.
  2. Open Copilot. Select the Copilot control or open its chat pane in the interface available to you.
  3. Ask a specific question. For example: “What deadline does this document give for the launch, and where is it stated?” A focused question makes it easier to check the answer against the relevant passage.
  4. Review the response for references. When citations or reference links are shown, open them to jump to the cited part of the document. Their exact placement can vary by interface.
  5. Compare the answer with the passage. Read enough surrounding text to check whether the reference supports the answer in context.

Microsoft’s reference-finding tutorial describes asking Copilot for specific information and following a link to the relevant section.

Ask Copilot to draft content with citations

For new content, state what you want Copilot to produce and which source material it should use. Microsoft’s drafting instructions describe typing “/” and selecting a specific file when that feature is available. The slash-and-file workflow may not appear in every account or interface.

A practical prompt could be: “Using the referenced project brief, draft a short summary for the leadership team. Add citations to the source material for each key claim, and flag anything the source does not support.” This wording is a prompt example, not a guaranteed command or a promise that every claim will receive a citation.

For a more useful first draft, specify the audience, purpose, format, tone, approximate length, and any constraints. Ask for one clear deliverable, then refine it with targeted follow-up requests. Microsoft offers further advice in its guide to effective prompts for Copilot in Word.

Verify citations before relying on or sharing a draft

  • Check support: Does the cited passage actually back the specific sentence, number, or conclusion?
  • Read the context: Does surrounding text qualify, limit, or contradict the claim?
  • Confirm the source: Is the cited file the correct and current version for this task?
  • Review high-impact details: Check facts, figures, names, citations, policy statements, and sensitive information particularly carefully.
  • Edit the result: Keep, revise, or remove generated text as appropriate before sharing it.

Microsoft advises users to review Copilot-generated content and verify its details; responsibility for deciding what to share remains with the user. Read its draft and add content guidance for that review advice.

Why citations may differ across Microsoft experiences

Do not confuse references visible inside Word with citation analytics in SharePoint. Microsoft’s Copilot citations page describes analytics for specified Copilot Chat surfaces and says citations from in-app Copilot experiences in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are excluded from those counts. That reporting scope does not mean Word’s in-app references are unavailable.
