Hermes and OpenClaw are open-source agent projects you can run and configure yourself. OpenAI Operator is no longer best treated as a separate current product: OpenAI introduced it as a research preview, then said its functionality had been integrated into ChatGPT agent. The practical choice is therefore between operating a configurable project such as Hermes or OpenClaw and using OpenAI’s hosted agent experience, subject to current availability.
Hermes vs OpenClaw vs OpenAI Operator: how they differ
| Option | Operating model | What the cited documentation describes | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hermes Agent | Open-source project for a user-managed deployment | The project repository documents messaging gateways, tools and toolsets, skills, memory, MCP integration, and cron scheduling. | You choose and maintain the deployment, model/provider, integrations, and credential handling. Capabilities listed by the project should be checked against the release you plan to use. Hermes Agent repository |
| OpenClaw | Open-source, configurable agent project | Its official overview presents it as an extensible, proactive agent and explains how configuration choices affect security. | Security settings matter: the cited documentation says sandboxing and execution approvals are off by default. | OpenAI Operator / ChatGPT agent | Operator began as a hosted research preview; OpenAI later said its functionality was integrated into ChatGPT agent | Operator used its own browser to view and interact with pages; ChatGPT agent was announced as combining website interaction with research and other capabilities. | Operator is predecessor/capability lineage, not a like-for-like standalone current product on the evidence cited. Which AI agent should you choose?
Choose Hermes if its documented integrations fit your workflow
Hermes is worth evaluating when you want a project you can run and configure, and its documented messaging, skills, memory, MCP, or scheduling features match the work you need done. The repository also describes migration from OpenClaw, including importing selected settings, memories, skills, and credentials with dry-run options. Treat these as repository-documented capabilities, not independently tested behavior; review the project’s installation and security guidance for the release you intend to deploy.

Choose OpenClaw if you want its configurable, proactive agent approach
OpenClaw also suits operators who want to manage an open-source agent deployment. Its official overview emphasizes extensibility and configuration, but configuration is not a minor detail: the page says sandboxing and execution approvals are disabled by default, native plugins run in-process without sandboxing, and a single gateway is one trust domain. Decide how you will isolate tools, manage credentials, and approve consequential actions before exposing it to sensitive data or systems.

Consider ChatGPT agent rather than looking for standalone Operator
OpenAI’s January 23, 2025 Operator announcement described a research-preview agent that interacted with websites through its own browser, using typing, clicking, and scrolling. The page’s July 17, 2025 update says Operator functionality was integrated into ChatGPT as ChatGPT agent and the standalone Operator site would be sunset. OpenAI’s launch post describes ChatGPT agent as combining website interaction with research and other capabilities. #1 Best Overall
What changes when you self-host an agent?
With Hermes or OpenClaw, control comes with operational work. You are responsible for choosing a model/provider and infrastructure, configuring integrations and tools, protecting credentials, and maintaining the running deployment. The cited sources do not provide a comparable setup-time study, so there is no reliable basis here for saying one takes less time to install or maintain.
Cost is similarly deployment-specific for these projects: infrastructure and model/provider choices determine the bill. Operator’s former research-preview access terms should not be treated as current pricing, and the cited launch material is not enough to establish current ChatGPT agent availability or cost. Verify those details at the time you decide.
Security depends on configuration, not the product label
The available OpenClaw overview gives specific defaults and trust boundaries; it explicitly warns that its comparison describes configured architectures, not security certifications. Its cited source review was refreshed against development snapshots dated August 27, 2026, so check the documentation and settings for your installed version rather than assuming those details apply unchanged.
The cited Hermes repository covers security as a project area, but the available material does not give an equally detailed, version-matched set of security defaults for comparison. That is not evidence that Hermes is either safer or less safe. Review the actual release documentation and determine which processes, tools, plugins, credentials, and data the deployment can access.
Rank #3
Do not read the published benchmark figures as a three-way ranking
OpenAI reported 38.1% on OSWorld, 58.1% on WebArena, and 87% on WebVoyager for its Computer-Using Agent in a January 23, 2025 announcement. These are OpenAI-reported results for that agent, not a head-to-head comparison of Hermes, OpenClaw, and Operator, and they should not be presented as a current ranking. A practical comparison checklist
- List the tasks the agent must perform and the systems, websites, or messaging channels it needs to reach.
- For Hermes or OpenClaw, confirm that the release supports the required tools and integrations, then account for setup, updates, and ongoing operation.
- Map the agent’s access to data and actions. For OpenClaw in particular, do not assume sandboxing or execution approvals are enabled by default.
- Compare the operational responsibilities of a user-managed project with the current ChatGPT agent experience and access available to your account.
- Estimate self-hosted costs from your chosen infrastructure and model/provider rather than assuming a fixed project price.
- Use benchmark figures only when the agent, task suite, date, and test conditions actually match the decision you are making.
