Start with the exact title in quotation marks. If that does not find the article, search a distinctive phrase from the title with the author’s surname, then check the journal or publication and year to confirm the match. Finding a citation and getting its full text are separate steps.
How do I find a specific article?
- Search the full title. Enter it in quotation marks in a search engine or a scholarly search service. Quotation marks can focus a phrase search where the service supports them. PubMed also lets you paste an article title into its search box and uses citation matching that can find a likely match even if a query contains an incorrect term. See PubMed Help.
- Try a distinctive fragment. If the full-title search returns nothing, remove words that may be remembered inaccurately and search a rare phrase from the title. Try alternate spelling, punctuation, or a subtitle if those details may differ.
- Add identifying details. Combine the title phrase with the author’s surname. If the name is common, add initials, the journal or publication name, a year, or a subject term.
- Check a scholarly database or metadata service. Choose one suited to the subject: PubMed for biomedical citations, Google Scholar for scholarly search, or Crossref for publication metadata. Their coverage and search fields differ, so a missing result in one service does not prove that the article does not exist.
- Verify the record. Compare the title, author list, publication, and year with the details you know. Treat similar-looking results as candidates until the identifying details agree.
- Follow the access link. Once you have the correct citation, check its publisher record or any library link for full text. A citation appearing in search results does not mean its full text is freely available.
How can I find an article by its title?
When you know the exact title
Search the title in quotation marks first. PubMed supports phrase searching and title-based citation lookup; its help explains how to search and refine results at PubMed Help. If punctuation or a small wording detail is uncertain, try the title without that detail or use only its most distinctive words.

When you know only part of the title
Keep the rarest phrase you remember, then add the author’s surname, publication name, or year if known. This reduces the chance that a broad phrase returns unrelated articles. Crossref documents searches by article title and author, including fuzzy title matching; when more than one record looks plausible, compare the publication details rather than selecting the closest title alone. See Crossref’s author/article-title query guidance.
How do I find an article if I only know the author?
Search the author’s surname with any remembered words from the title or a subject term. For common surnames, add initials, the journal, or an approximate publication year to narrow the candidates. Google Scholar provides an author: operator and advanced-search fields for author, title, and publication; its search instructions are in Google Scholar Help.

If the author’s name appears in different forms, such as with or without initials or a suffix, try those variations. For biomedical journals, PubMed accepts citation details including author, journal, and year, so you can look up a citation without constructing field tags or Boolean syntax. If you know the journal but are unsure of its exact name, the National Library of Medicine’s catalog supports journal-title and author lookup, including variations in initials and suffixes: NLM Catalog Help.
Which search service should you use?
| Service | Useful when | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PubMed | You are looking for biomedical citations, or you have a title or citation details such as author, journal, and year. | Use phrase search for an exact sequence of words. If there are too few results, remove overly specific terms; if there are too many, add detail or use available filters such as date, article type, or full-text availability. Instructions: PubMed Help. |
| Google Scholar | You want scholarly search with author, title, or publication fields, or want to check for a library link beside a result. | Use author: or advanced search to narrow candidates. A library link or citation does not guarantee free full text. Instructions: Google Scholar Help. |
| Crossref | You want to locate publication metadata using an article title and author. | Fuzzy matching can surface likely records, but multiple plausible matches are ambiguous; verify the publication details. Guidance: Crossref author/article-title query. |
| NLM Catalog | You need to identify or search for a journal, including when author-name forms vary. | It helps with journal and author lookup; use an article database or the publisher record to confirm the article itself. Instructions: NLM Catalog Help. |
How do you confirm that a result is the right article?
Compare the details you have against the result record rather than relying on a title resemblance alone:

- Title: Does the wording match, allowing for small differences in punctuation or subtitle?
- Author: Do the name and initials fit the person you mean?
- Publication and year: Are the journal or other publication and date consistent with what you remember?
- Record or DOI: Open the database or publisher record if you need to distinguish near-identical titles.
- Full text: Check the publisher page or your library separately; finding the citation establishes the record, not access rights.
Crossref specifically cautions that author-and-title searches can return ambiguous matches. When two candidates are close, use the journal, year, author list, and record details to resolve the difference.
