You need an iPhone running iOS 17 or later, an Apple TV running tvOS 17 or later, and a Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote (2nd generation or later). The locating feature is in Control Center’s Apple TV Remote control; Apple’s instructions do not require Find My.
Check whether your remote can be located
Apple documents the locating feature for a Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote (2nd generation or later). It is not documented for every older remote generation. Your iPhone must run iOS 17 or later, and your Apple TV must run tvOS 17 or later. See Apple Support’s compatibility requirements.

Use your iPhone to find the remote
- Open Control Center. On iPhone X or later, swipe down from the upper-right corner. On iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and earlier, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Open Apple TV Remote. Tap the Apple TV Remote control, then tap the device list and choose the Apple TV you use with the missing remote.
- Start locating. Tap Find next to the remote and follow the on-screen prompts.
As you move closer, Apple says the on-screen circle grows and the status changes from “far” to “near” to “here.” This is proximity guidance, not a guaranteed exact-location pin. In his October 1, 2026 Tom’s Guide article, Tom Pritchard describes the interface as giving him a rough idea of the remote’s position rather than pinpointing it; he says he found his remote under the back of his couch after moving it. That is his individual experience, not a general accuracy test.

If the iPhone cannot locate the remote
If your remote is ineligible, the requirements are not met, or the locating prompts do not lead you to it, you can still control Apple TV with an iPhone or iPad, or consider a compatible replacement. Apple lists these remote choices by Apple TV model:

Apple also explains how to set up an iPhone or iPad as a remote for Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD. A physical replacement is optional, not a requirement for using the iPhone remote control.
