How to Find a Linux Browser That Supports Your Essential Extensions

Find a Linux browser for your essential extensions by verifying each add-on’s availability, permissions, and real-world features on your setup.

Choose a Linux browser by checking whether your must-have extensions are available and actually perform the tasks you need—not by relying on a browser ranking or a general compatibility claim. The right choice depends on your extension list, Linux distribution, and browser package.

Start with what each extension must do

Write down every extension you consider essential and the specific job it needs to perform. “It appears in a store” is not the same as “it works for my use.” Note whether it must modify pages, interact with a particular site, or sync data; these needs can expose compatibility gaps that a listing alone will not.

For each candidate extension, check its current listing in the catalog intended for the browser you are considering. Look for stated browser support, minimum version, required permissions, and limitations. Do not assume that browsers with related extension APIs behave identically.

Compare candidates on the things that affect your decision

Check What to verify
Catalog availability Is the extension currently published in the browser’s intended catalog?
Feature compatibility Does it carry out the task you rely on in that browser, rather than merely install?
Permission fit Are you comfortable with the requested access to data and websites?
Linux installation and updates Can you use the ordinary store flow, or does the option depend on advanced configuration?
Manifest policy and maintenance Does the extension use a manifest version whose support may change?

Official browser documentation explains general installation routes and selected policies, but does not provide an apples-to-apples compatibility matrix for every extension and Linux distribution. A specific browser cannot be named as a universal winner without checking your combinations.

Where Brave, Chrome, and Firefox fit

Brave: a candidate for Chrome Web Store extensions

Brave documents adding extensions from the Chrome Web Store and says, “Brave offers support for nearly all extensions that are compatible with chromium.” That is a broad statement from the Brave Help Center, not a guarantee that a particular extension works. Search the store, choose “Add to Brave,” and inspect the requested data permissions before installing.

Chrome: use its ordinary Web Store flow

Chrome’s standard installation path is the Chrome Web Store. Its installation help explains how to install an extension and approve permissions. Chrome also offers controls for site access and says unsupported extensions may be disabled, so check the extension’s current status rather than assuming it will remain available.

Firefox: check the specific Mozilla add-on

Evaluate each extension against its listing in the Mozilla add-on catalog; do not assume a Chrome extension can be installed in Firefox. Mozilla’s policy documentation describes enterprise administration of extensions, including installation, removal, and locking. It is not a consumer compatibility list or a guarantee about an individual add-on.

Install carefully, then test on your Linux setup

  1. Shortlist browsers using the extension listings. For each must-have add-on, confirm that it is currently available for the browser and review its stated support and requirements.
  2. Install from a trusted catalog or the extension vendor. Use the browser’s ordinary store flow when available; avoid treating a more technical installation route as proof of compatibility.
  3. Review the permission prompt. Decide whether the requested data and site access make sense for the extension’s job. Chrome documents site-access controls, and Brave cautions that it cannot vouch for the security or privacy of third-party extensions.
  4. Test the actual task. In the Linux distribution and browser package you plan to use, check the features you depend on—including relevant sites or syncing—before moving profiles or relying on the setup for work.
  5. Recheck after updates. Browser policies and store listings can change; pay particular attention if an extension depends on Manifest V2.

What to know about Manifest V2

Manifest version can affect whether an extension remains supported. Brave says it has “committed to continue supporting some Manifest V2 extensions,” but “some” does not mean every MV2 extension or indefinite support. Brave also says Manifest V3 extensions work as they do in Chrome. Chrome’s help notes that unsupported extensions may be disabled. Check the current status of the extension and browser rather than treating any broad policy statement as a permanent guarantee. See Brave’s Manifest V2 statement and Chrome’s installation and support guidance.

When Chrome’s advanced Linux installation route makes sense

Google’s developer documentation describes installing extensions on Linux through preferences JSON files, with references to Chrome Web Store extensions, externally hosted extensions, and local CRX files. This is a configuration mechanism, chiefly relevant to software distributors or administrators—not the ordinary personal-user installation flow and not a workaround for extension incompatibility. See Chrome’s Linux installation documentation.
