To fix low happiness in Farthest Frontier, open the Town Center’s Happiness tab and address the need it shows as deficient. Start with food, health and shelter; then check the settlement’s later-stage needs and nearby desirability. “Unrest” is not established in the official guide pages reviewed as a separate named mechanic, so this article uses it to mean villagers who appear unhappy or stressed.
Diagnose the problem in the Town Center
Happiness measures villagers’ satisfaction with life in the frontier. The Town Center’s Happiness tab summarizes their needs and satisfaction, making it the best place to identify what is wrong before spending resources on new buildings. The official guides reviewed were accessed on October 4, 2026; they do not display publication dates or specify a game version.

Food and hunger
Prolonged low food supplies or hunger raise stress. If the Happiness tab points to food, stabilize supplies before investing in amenities: a decorative or entertainment building does not address a food shortage.
#1 Best Overall
- EASY TO LEARN, QUICK TO SET UP: Plays in 60-90 minutes with minimal table space. A perfect gateway for new strategy gamers, families with teens, and fans of Catan, Splendor, and Spice Road who want something fresh.
- THREE STRATEGIC DECKS: Trade cards build gold, Influence cards create ongoing effects you trigger every turn, and Specialty cards unlock powerful one-shot abilities and victory points. Mix and match for a different game every time.
- MULTIPLE PATHS TO VICTORY: Race through medieval trade routes, collect resources to convert into victory points, or build a card engine that pays off late. First to 20 victory points wins, but how you get there is up to you.
- UPGRADE YOUR TRADER: Three permanent upgrade tracks let you move farther, draw more cards, and play more from your hand. Spend gold to compound your options as the game accelerates.
- FITS IN A BACKPACK: 7-inch box sets up in 5 minutes on any table. Easy to throw in a bag for trips and game nights without hauling a giant box around.
Health and shelter
Health and adequate housing are also fundamental. Unsanitary conditions and inadequate housing affect villagers, so investigate those deficits when they appear rather than treating every low-happiness problem as a desirability issue.
Respond to needs that grow with the town
As the settlement prospers, villagers can expect more than the basics. The Happiness guide lists shoes, clothes, family support, beer, entertainment, luxuries and spirituality among the needs, alongside food, health, shelter and desirability. Check which category is actually lacking and provide the relevant support; building every service without checking the tab can waste resources.

Use desirability to protect and improve homes
Desirability affects shelter satisfaction, particularly for upgraded homes. Turn on the Desirability overlay with the default G key, inspect the area around homes, and use building placement previews to judge how proposed construction may affect nearby shelters.

Place helpful services and decorations near homes
Markets and healer’s houses improve nearby desirability. Parks, shrines and other decorations can also help. Use the overlay and placement preview when choosing locations instead of assuming that a building will benefit every nearby home equally.

Keep harmful production away from residential areas
Many production buildings reduce desirability. Smoke, noise or smell from production can make an area less suitable for homes, so place those sources away from shelters where possible.
Avoid relying on duplicate coverage
A shelter benefits only once from a service building’s desirability, and some repeated decorations add no further benefit. A mix of decoration types can be more useful than repeating one type; check the placement preview rather than assuming a duplicate will stack.

Respond promptly to an upgraded home’s abandonment warning
If an upgraded shelter warns that its area no longer meets the required desirability, restore the area before the condition progresses. The official guide says falling below an upgraded home’s desirability requirement can lead to abandonment. Prolonged abandonment can leave villagers without occupancy and contribute to exposure.
